Hey guys, I have a final project for my Newspaper Physics class coming up. We have to do a powerpoint presentation on some sort of physics article or topic, ect. I love sports so I want to do something on sports with a physics aspect. Some girl in my class today actually did a presentation on the sweet spot of a bat and the physics that goes along with that.

I was just wondering if you guys had any ideas of what I can do for this project. It would be sweet if I could do something on one of the main sports (hockey, football, baseball).

thanks in advance

I know I have read MANY articles on the physics of pitching (curveballs, gyro-balls, etc). That would be a great one.

or

Bowling would be interesting too! Not sure how much studying has been done on that.

Hockey is a main sport? :mj07:

How many buds you have that even watch Hockey, let alone play it.

Golf would be perfect for this project, it uses the fastest moving ball of any sport.

Hell, I may even write the paper for you!

eh, I love hockey, been playing it since I was 5 at came here to school for it, lol. So basically most of my friends watch and play hockey.

Golf does seem like a decent sport to do this on, ill look into that. Could do something with the swings and such.

Hope this comes out right in description. I've had this question about optimal clubhead mass(swingweight?) and length of shaft that would provide maximum distance of the golf ball while still maintaining control. May be too many variables to quantify. Any thoughts on that Agent?

The problem with that scenario (I think) is that it would vary so much for individual body types and swings. It would be different for every person.

Something along these lines I dealt with last week is the custom fitting process. I met the rep at the driving range, and went through the entire thing. He hooked up the launch monitor, which measures ball speed, spin rate, and launch angle. Then, they have a graph which translates the optimum combination of these 3 things. They measure your driver, and try to beat it with their own. It also equates all of these numbers into a distance, including roll.

The preferred ball flight for the launch monitor, doesn't fit my eye, it is too high, or so I believed. The description the rep used was a garden hose. Turn it on full blast and try to shoot the stream as far as possible. There is a point where the trajectory is too low, a point too high, and the optimum launch angle. That made it clear what we were trying to accomplish. The other determining factor is spin rate. My rate was 4400 rpm with my current driver, which is way too high. This affects accuracy, as well as roll when the ball lands. I was carrying the ball right at 260 yds, but it would almost back up because of the spin. For a comparison, Tigers spin rate is in the 2100 range. With a different shaft and clubhead, I was able to increase my ball speed from 148 to 156, spin rate down from 4400 to 2800. This equated to 11 yds gained in carry from 260-271. Add into this the spin rate reduction, and the ball lands and leaps forward almost as if it has overspin on it! What a fun process it was to go through. Maybe this would work for your project Tpaine?

Hope that helps...

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
Agent,
I was told the "ideal" spin rate was 3000? or as close to that as could be achieved. And for that matter, the club reps also wanted to achieve a launch angle of 12 degrees. Your thoughts? :SIB

By the way, hockey is a more of a sport than golf:00hour

Franky, I believe those factors depend on your ball speed. For me, 14 degrees was optimum launch angle. Lower spin rate the better.

For your little powder puff slice, 12 degrees is probably ok...:SIB
