At least one person living in the greater Miami area has to remember the lessons learned from Ten Cent Beer Night in Cleveland over 30 years ago. The lesson, of course, is ?Don?t sell beer for a dime.? Whoever those folks may be, it?s evident not one of them is affiliated with Miami FC. Or perhaps their public relations interns think they hit an intellectual jackpot by pitching the idea: ?But what if, rather than sell it for 10 cents, we just, like, give it away??
This coming Thursday and Saturday, Miami FC of the United Soccer League will lure in more fans by providing free beer (or, as they wrote it verbatim in their press release, ?FREE BEER?) to all fans of legal drinking age. Wow, that?s ? oh, how to put this nicely ? a brainstorm that belongs in the esteemed Tom Smykowski echelon of bad ideas.
I checked the attendance numbers of Miami FC home games this year, and although they have a 7,000-seat stadium, the largest crowd of the year didn?t even crack 900 souls. So we won?t be talking thousands upon thousands of drunkards here. But as we all know, all it takes a bad idea to be carried out is at least two drunk people.
Oh, and ? AND on Saturday, prior to the distribution of free beer, the team will hold a blood drive outside the stadium. The team will give blood, which is nice of them, but any fan who donates a pint will receive free tickets and, natch, can earn that lost fluid back in free alcohol hours later.
?It will be an experience for the entire family unlike any other found in South Florida,? Miami FC boasts in the release. Hey, can?t argue with that. ?The place to be this weekend for pro soccer, free beer, and countless other entertainment and giveaways is Tropical Park Stadium watching our mighty Miami FC battle the Puerto Rico Islanders.?
In fact, just so he?s covering all his bases, on Thursday night Darwin will TiVo Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
