Another former Bush cabinet member jumps ship
DTB did you get the talking points yet? Gonna be hard to slim him up. Is the talking point a book he is writting this time on why he said this?

THE former American secretary of state Colin Powell has revealed that he spent 2? hours vainly trying to persuade President George W Bush not to invade Iraq and believes today?s conflict cannot be resolved by US forces.

?I tried to avoid this war,? Powell said at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado. ?I took him through the consequences of going into an Arab country and becoming the occupiers.?

Powell has become increasingly outspoken about the level of violence in Iraq, which he believes is in a state of civil war. ?The civil war will ultimately be resolved by a test of arms,? he said. ?It?s not going to be pretty to watch, but I don?t know any way to avoid it. It is happening now.?

He added: ?It is not a civil war that can be put down or solved by the armed forces of the United States.? All the military could do, Powell suggested, was put ?a heavier lid on this pot of boiling sectarian stew?.

The signs are that the views of Powell and other critics of the war are finally being heard in the Pentagon, if not yet in the White House. Robert Gates, the defence secretary, is drawing up plans to reduce troop levels in Iraq in anticipation that General David Petraeus, the commander in Iraq, will not be able to deliver an upbeat progress report in September on the American troop surge.

?It should come as no secret to anyone that there are discussions about what is a postsurge strategy,? said Tony Fratto, deputy White House press secretary, last week.

The surge?s lack of demonstrable success is creating fissures in the Republican party as well as putting enormous pressure on the Democratic presidential candidates to favour a rapid pull-out, which Gates fears could leave Iraq in chaos.

New Mexico senator Pete Domenici became the third Republican senator in recent weeks to break ranks openly with Bush on the war. ?We cannot continue asking our troops to sacrifice indefinitely while the Iraqi government is not making measurable progress,? he said. ?I am calling for a new strategy that will move our troops out of combat operations and on the path home.?

Speculation is growing that Gates will demonstrate his commitment to withdrawing US forces by moving a combat brigade of up to 3,000 troops out of Iraq as early as October and continuing to reduce their numbers month by month from their current strength of 160,000 to presurge levels of around 130,000 by the summer of 2008.

Gates believes American troop withdrawals are essential to building a cross-party consensus for retaining a presence in Iraq after Bush?s term in office expires. As a former director of the CIA who saw out the cold war in the early 1990s, he hopes to win the same bipartisan support for Iraq that President Harry Truman secured against the Soviet Union after the second world war.

The policy is likely to appeal to Gordon Brown, the prime minister, who hopes to begin withdrawing more British troops from southern Iraq by the end of August.

A senior defence source said it would be possible to reduce the number of American forces to roughly 50,000-70,000 by election day in November 2008. ?You are going to have to have some people left behind to provide stability and security for the country and take on the terrorists,? the source said.

The figures are similar to those floated by aides to Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, although she has been upping the rhetoric against remaining in Iraq in an effort to capture the support of party activists.

According to Powell, the US cannot ?blow a whistle one morning? and have all American forces just leave. The former secretary of state has twice met Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate, to advise him on foreign policy. Despite his antiwar stance, Obama supports a phased withdrawal that could leave a ?significantly reduced force? in Iraq for ?an extended period?.

Defence experts believe it will be impossible to maintain the surge?s high troop levels beyond February at the latest, given the need to rotate and refresh troops. Powell, who served as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff in the early 1990s, said in Aspen that America?s volunteer army was already overstretched. He predicted that Bush would be forced to ?face the situation on the ground? and alter course by the end of this year.

Supporters of the surge believe this could send a disastrous signal to the Iraqis. ?If we pull out, if we stop this operation now, we will hand Al-Qaeda a terrific victory,? said Frederick Kagan, a military historian at the American Enterprise Institute and an early advocate of the policy.

?The Iraqi government, right now, is a terrific ally in the war on terror. There have been more Iraqis killed fighting Al-Qaeda than in any other nation of the world. The question is, are we going to stand by them??

The same political fault line runs through the White House between Vice-President Dick Cheney?s office and the State Department ? now run by Condoleezza Rice, Powell?s successor ? as it did at the start of the Iraq war. Bush has not yet thrown his weight definitively behind one side or the other, but the key difference this time is that the defence secretary is one of the ?realists?.

According to Powell: ?We have to face the reality of the situation that is on the ground and not what we would want it to be.? He believes that, even if the military surge has been a partial success in areas such as Anbar province, where Sunni tribes have turned on Al-Qaeda, it has not been accompanied by the vital political and economic ?surge? and reconciliation process promised by the Iraqi government.

Al-Qaeda, Powell asserted, was only 10% of the problem in Iraq and Nouri al-Maliki, its prime minister, lacked the political will to establish an effective government. After a promising start to the surge at the beginning of the year, 453 unidentified corpses were found on the streets of Baghdad last month, 41% more than the 321 bodies found in January, according to unofficial Iraqi health ministry statistics.

The military gains could prove as fleeting in Anbar as Baghdad. American officers in Iraq believe Al-Qaeda strengthened its hold on the Sunni-dominated region in 2005, when responsibility for security was shifted prematurely to Iraqi forces that were led by Shi?ites and proved incapable of providing protection.

Powell believes that a reduction in US forces will have to be accompanied by talks with Syria and Iran. ?You have to talk to the people you dislike most in this dangerous world.?

The general and former joint chiefs of staff added: ?Shi?ites will ultimately prevail because they are 60% of the population and their militias can be pretty violent. They will prevail also because they are determined not to be ruled again by the Sunnis.

?The Sunnis are struggling for power and survival and it?s going to be resolved by a test of arms. It?s going to be very ugly.?

I have more respect for Powell than the entire Bush entourage combined. This man is a patriot and I am confident that he gets no pleasure from making his feelings about this administration known.

I realize he must have been giving the occupation time to work but I still lost a lot of respect for him for being silent for so long.

stevie..

i did some reading about this over the years, including interviews with powell.

powell was open about his opposition from day 1.at the very first meeting he told rumsfeld & cheney that "if they break it they will have to fix it". he was critical of the amount of soldiers that was used for the initial invasion...he wanted anywhere between 400,00-500,000 soldiers on the ground.but rumsfeld invisioned a streamline military for this war.to this day i don't understand why a 5 star general was made sec't. of state & a businessman (although he was def. sec't. under ford) was made the sec't. of defense.

Yeah, I've read all of this as well and it seemed like Powell was simply outnumbered.

Stevie I'm with you here. Lets not forget it was Powell who stood in front of the UN and blew out that pack of lies to start this rotten thing. If he was so concerned why didn't he refuse to do this? For some reason tho i still like the guy. Don't know why.
Why does this guy make me forgive him? I think he feels guilty as hell and somewhat responsible. The guilt has finally gotten to him. A Bushie with a conscience. Not many of those around but when they pop up they get slimmed big time. Haven't watch any news today and i was wondering if they are gonna slim him. I think this one they may just hope goes away. I think slimming him can backfire.

As soon as Powell left public service, he went public about his regretable presentation before the UN.

To quote my Grandaddy, "Son, it is a fact of our existence that we all make mistakes and God knows I've made more than anybody. But the worst mistake you can make in life is to do something wrong and refuse to admit it. At that point you can only hope that you have learned something from the experience and that you will never make the same mistake again because your next one is right around the bend."

I have proudly lived my life by those words and I salute General Powell for doing the same.

When Powell left the Bush administration in January 2005, he was widely seen as having been at odds with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney over foreign policy choices.

It was Powell who told the United Nations and the world that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and posed an imminent threat. In his interview with Barbra Walters in 2005, he stated that he feels "terrible" about the claims he made in that now-infamous address -- assertions that later proved to be false.

When asked if he feels it has tarnished his reputation, he said, "Of course it will. It's a blot. I'm the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and [it] will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It's painful now."

My Grandaddy would be proud of this man as am I.

Gotta disagree with ya here Spongie.......

Gotta disagree with ya here Spongie.......

Powell is the kind of man this country should be proud of. When George Bush asked Powell to go in front of the UN to read the Lies the Neo Cons had manufactured his immediate response was "I'm not going to go and read this """""crap""" to the entire world". But he did. A while ago i saw him in an interview asked since he knew that every thing in the speech was false why did he read it any way.
His response was that one of the things he values in life is LOYALTY !!! Being a military man u are taught not to question ur superiors. He did what a loyal soldier does. He did say that it was the one "Black" mark on his career that he is not proud of.
I have nothing but respect for this man. Unfortunate he was forced to follow slime like Bush and his Cabal
of traitors.

His loyalty? What about his loyalty to his country?

His loyalty? What about his loyalty to his country?

when he lied to the UN he had to know that military personnel were going to die for a lie, but he rather be loyal to one man than to the United States of American. They should all be in jail, Powell too.

I agree, where is the F---ING LEADERSHIP ????? THAT'S WHAT I ALWAYS ASK. NOWHERE IS THE SIMPLE ANSWER !!!!! After the gulf war, we did not go into Baghdad when most of the American People would have supported it and most were dismayed that we did not go. Powell and Swartzkoff had the trust and confidence of the American People and they convinced this knuckleheads Father not to take Iraq because there was no way out. I have to be honest and say, I did not understand why we could not finish the job against a country that fell so fast to our Military. I knew the answer to why we did not go; very soon after this President made the most egregious tactical error in the history of These United States by putting boots on the ground in Iraq. I can not believe that people like Powell & Swartzkoff, knowing what they knew, did not take & share their knowledge with the American People threw the press and dismantled this MAJOR MALFUNCTION BEFORE IT COULD GET OFF THE GROUND !!! We live in a Democracy, We have the privilege to express our thoughts. Powell & Swartzkoff let their brothers down. As a Military LEADER, your first responsibility is to the welfare of your men. These guys have been there and they knew what we were in for. I have wondered from the early days of this war, why did 43 go where 41 would not ? Did Father & Son talk ??? Powell should have resigned and gone public against this war before it started. He should have put together a coalition of people like Swartzkoff and presented their case to The American people threw the press. That would have been LEADERSHIP !!! I don't blame this mess solely on Bush, but he is the President. The American People have to share the blame because of our apathy. Our whole system, our way of life let this happen. Most of Us Americans want to play the victim, we blame it on our government and our leadership. We are, our government. We are, our leadership. I'll bet Powell doesn't go a day wishing he was a better LEADER !!!!! He knew ! We all live with what if's . I'm grateful, I don't have to live with his !!!

If you are going to hold Bush accountable you have to do the same for Powell. Powell of all people knew ! F--ck LOYALTY !! Loyalty to who ?????????? He should have been loyal to the minds, bodies and lives of our Military personal. He had a big boy job, he was not a SOLDIER, HE WAS A WANNABE LEADER. That piece of shit can take his one mark to his grave ! How do you think that guy sleeps at night knowing what he knew ?

Let me reiterate something here. The title of my post was in jest to Weasel and the other neocons because when someone has an disagreement about the war they are somehow labeled un patriotic or a traitor. I do agree with a lot of what Spy, Stevie , and Bryant said but i can see why Hammer said what he did.

Apparently you still have this odd notion that the Bush administration runs on logic. It makes perfect sense once you accept their Bizarro world.

DTB, where are youi? Weasel?

Jabber i told you this guy was a tough one to slim. These two have nothing to say unless their puppet leaders give them a push. Apparently the puppet masters have no comment on this. If the puppet masters have no comment then these two sure as hell won't have one either. Haven't been paying to much attention tho so i could be wrong.
Kinda doubt it tho

this is a tough one. you take an oath to defend the constitution - foreign and domestic. the prez is still the commander n chief, and i believe powell is required to obey orders. do not know what choice he really had... i have always liked him. i could be wrong, but i think he does have integrity.
