..9,999 lost games my beloved Phillies have endured. and today they could hit the 10,000 number..the most of any pro team...How someone born at Fordham hospital in the Bronx over 50 years ago and a skip and a jump from his appartment on 187th street...became a phillie fan...is a sad and long story. The cliff notes version is...as a 5 or 6 yr old I would flip baseball cards in the stoop of our appartment.I became so good I could flip 100 heads in a row or tails.Soon I started beating everyone on the block collecting many cards.I became so good I extended myself to other blocks,Belmont Ave[where Dion Dimucci came from],Arthur ave,Hughes ave,Southern Blvd..My favorite flippers were the players in the red caps with "P" on them.Everyone was a yankee fan and mantle, maris,Berra,Ford were the cards everyone wanted. So i used Ashburn,Konstancey,Robin Roberts cards and beat everyone. I remember at one time I had 10-15 1956 Mantles and Yogi cards. Plus to trade ..i could get one mantle for 10 phillies...I was a Phillie fan.it also made me different in the neighborhood.my father would take me to games at yankee stadium but it seemed it was always against the clev indians.Rocky Colavito was one of my fathers favs.
I liked watching mantle, got his autograph on two baseballs and a poster.but I loved my Phillies.
It was early 60's.. My hero was Richie Allen.Fav pitcher Chris short and Bunning.Johnny Callison, etc. Bobby Wine couldn't hit his weight but was a great fielder.got to go to shea stad to see them..
many of those 9,999 loses i know of due to reading every box score from 1963 to almost today.I got sporting news and they printed every box score.
The 60's,70's,80's,90's and 2000's has been a rollercoaster if you are a true Philly fan.The 64 collaspe, the Schmidt and Luzinki's years with Lefty.
Finally in '80 after almost 100 yrs we win the WSeries..The 90's we have one winning season and make it to the series and freak'in Mitch Williams throws Carter that....ahhh..Can't say anymore.
Being a Phiilie fan has been tough.I'm sure there are a few out there that can relate and understand what we have gone through.but I love my Phillies and always will.

Three weeks ago we graduated over 250 seniors at my HS.The day before graduation a student named Tommy G comes into my office. He says the office called and he hasn't returned his chemistry book and he will not walk in the grad ceremony until he pays for it.He says to me he doesn't have the $60 to pay now but will give me $10 today and owe me.I was about to accept his deal when he said..Mr. Box....four years ago at frost valley[a peer leadership weekend trip we take freshman to build self esteem, etc} "you gave me this Juan Samuel baseball card..you said it was a "get out of jail card" in case you needed it in the next 4 yrs". I was so moved..I said "tommy..you have had that card in your wallet for 4 years and your cashing it in on the day before you graduate.." I said "keep your 10 bucks..I'll see tomorrow at graduation..
We'll you see..I bought over 20,000 juan Samuel baseball cards thinking he was going to be the next Willie Mays...of course the cards are worth about a penny each.So i over the years I give them to my students as "free get out of jail cards providing the infraction is small"..it's for volunteer work, helping teachers, etc.my staff knows all about them and at x-mas time they all get one too.
I was so moved that this kid held on all these years..When his named was called up during graduation...I put the Samuel card in his diploma so he can keep it...
...I still have about 10,000 Samuel cards ....

9,999...kinda sad..but Corey Hamils is pitching...Phillies win today...play the -1.5 over cards...10,000 will have to wait for another day..and just maybe the rest of the month....
hope everone is having a nice summer....

Box it is surprising how many people loved Allen. He was the guy i also followed the most. I was the Allen fan and my brother was the Johny Callison fan.
That 10,000 loss all breaks down to one thing and you can say it for all Philly teams. People in high positions with bad talent evaluation skills littered all over every organization. They get a superstar and they have no idea how to build around him. Bad draft after bad draft, The Sixers just took the only guy that wasn't sitting at the draft table out of the 18 kids who were there. This was at pick 12. The Eagles just picked a guy people projected to go in the third round. It just goes on and on. The Flyers pick guys who are 6 6 but can't skate or have hands of stone. The Phillies. Well, all you have to do is look at Pat Burrell. Number 1 overall pick who has been a complete bust. Phillies have improved in this area so they deserve a chance. when the Phillies were good you always heard of one name and it was Paul Owens.

Loved reading that Box. Thank you for sharing.

My grandfather was a Phillies fan all his life & I have heard every Phillies story from the late 20's till the '98 season when he passed away.

He loved them with all his heart. He was born there & after spending 60 years in the Army & w/ the USPS, he died there.

I have sooo many fond memories of him & baseball. He is the reason I am a huge sports fan today. One of the best was every spring training when I went over to their house we would head out into the garage and he would have the schedule posted up on his tool cabinet, next to the work bench & we would pick out a couple games to go that season. We would check to see if they were playing at home on either of our B-days, since we were June & July babies. Even after his 2nd, 3, and 4th strokes he would make it out to one game w/ a me a season just to keep the tradition going. I remember having to walk at such a snail's pace and help him every step while he walked up the ramps using his cane for support @ the Vet. I never felt more honored walking into a game on those nights.

Man, those are the things that really matter.

I miss him everyday & as stange as it sounds I find comfort in watching the Phillies. Its like a memory I get to re-live everyday they play ball during the season. The Phillies are the best tangible piece of Gramps I have left & I wouldn't trade the ballclub for the world.

Loved the long ball in the 70's and hence a Schmidty Fan!!Also remember watching the 80's WS home from school w/the chicken pox!!From RI but my dad brought me to see McCovey and the Padres in back to back games in the late 70's at the Vet!!how about the Fleer error cards in 1980 w/Rose Schmidt and someone else. Supposed to be worth something but never happen!!need to get to the new park!!

Sponge, your right about the Phils. So many bad moves.Richie Allen played with Fergue Jenkins in Little Rock.Phils trade Jenkins and he wins 20 games in a row the next 6 years.Ryne Sandburg, another unreal trade..But then they got lefty for rick wise.
I worked Army's baseball camp at West Point for 3 years.Danny roberts,Robins son was an asst coach there and told many stories about how bad Callison was to Allen. Big time bigot...hated richie..But danny was one of the biggest ass..hol too so I don't know what was the truth or BS..

3 Seconds...that was a nice story about your grandfather...those are great memories...I was in Cape May last wed. We stayed in Ocean City,NJ for a week...had a beer in the Ugly Mug..love Cape May..My wife takes pictures of those Victorian's. I have a house like that too. she likes the color combo's and tries to get ideas about the color of the porches.Again nice story about your grandfather..

Jinx..I do remember the error card..also the Billy Ripkin one with FU on the handle.
I bought in bulk and spent about $400 on the samuel cards..3 or 4 cases...Also bought Ellis Valentine, and a few other knuckle heads..Lost many cards like everyone else when your mother went into the closets and threw the cards out.But I always kept my "elite" in a cigar box that she didn't throw out..I have a 1953 Mantle...thats worth a lot. Also every other Mantle after that.Every Philly card from 1954 to the late 60's.
Can't collect anymore. The buisness is out of control...my favorite year was the 1956 set.The horizontal ones...I have the stars Williams,Aaron,etc...

Well,Phillies are still at 9,999...They won big today and so did I...

Box-Man : Good to see you "Posting". Brought
up you @ The "Madjackers" Golf party last&
mentioned to Jack-Man that I would like
to see you@ One of these "shingdigs" someday
& he & "Boilermaker"agreed.Still have couple hundred thousand cards too! Darn card companies
started getting greedy in the 1990`s,by printing
to many cards. Take, care:)

Fleer didn't debut until 1981. From being an avid collector when I was young, I don't recall such an error. Everyone keep in mind that Philly is one of the oldest teams around. No big deal with this "record".

Box, nice post. I use to go for autographs at the Vet starting in 1986. I was 10. I would wait by were the vistors would enter, the press area. When I was older 18-19 I would drive down from college (Kutztown U) and get autographs, then sneak in through one of the many spots to watch the Phillies BP. One time Gary Varsho (when he was still a player) gave me a cracked bat. It was a Lenny Dykstra bat. I would put in my time getting there 6 hours before the game, and stay until after the game for autographs. It was great. I do miss the urine scented Vet.
