If given the choice I'd take a year in iraq over a month in Watts--seriously.

kosar

you are putting words in Dogs mouth.

He did not say he would stay in Iraq as a civilian.

He just said that would be his choice for his best chance at survival. You are the one pressing the civlian part to make your point

Get a grip

Personally I would stay in Watts for the 30 days, and eat chitlins and hog jowls, collect unemployment, have a few kids, stage a few frauds, shoot a few mofos, chive my neighbors before they got me first, learn as much ebonics as I could, sell some drugs, cheat on my woman,
get a low rider, and basically just chill.

just sayin

Why not Couric. She should fit in with all others that went before she did. What network has not sent at least 3 or 4. Now big question is will she tell truth. Not do or say what she's told to by some nit wltt owner. As we see from a net work or two. I'll let you all guess who. Ones own by a none American.

I would imagine I could hand pick one small area of Iraq (much like Watts is a small area of the United States) and the answer from Wayne might be pretty different. Let's just say, how about a small area controlled by the Al Qaida folks that Cheney and Bush say are so prevalent in the country.

Can't wait to see the statistical diffusion of that comment.

I've been treated well in Watts. Had a a job as a courier that took me to all the bad neighborhoods at all times of night/day. Never a problem. The LA "ghettos" seem very exaggerated. Sure, you don't want to be at Florence & Normandy the hour that white cops are found not guilty of beating a guy that everybody in the world saw get plainly pummeled with deadly weapons - but apart from that your odds are pretty good. ...And believe it or not most people work too. Water runs, electricity flows, sectarian violence limited to crips and bloods ....seems a tad better than Baghdad.

dat 'cuz you know how to roll, smurph. :SIB

But seriously, did you ever visit Jordan Downs, or one of those other projects, after 11am? That's the cut off time, I'm told, for LA City Housing inspectors to be poking around those places. My friend was an intern with the City, and said the homies don't wake up til noon. (I took it with a grain of salt, of course).

One of our customers was a home medical supply company. I'd do late night deliveries to homes that covered every corner of So Cal at all hours. The most scared I ever was in South Central was from a pit bull once. I was walking down a pretty bad looking dark street and leaning over the fences to read addresses. This mutt jumped up from the dark and nearly took my face off. I learned not to lean over unkown fences after that.

I don't remember which projects were which, but I know I've been to a few - almost all the time in daylight. Actually probably went to more sketchy neighborhoods in East LA than Watts or Compton. Some of those neighborhoods made me feel more nervous - felt like I was being watched sometimes. ...But that can only be a fraction of how many minorities must feel in white neighborhoods - we have mastered the art of "watching" people who look different.

Those were the days. Gas was under a buck. Get the order, grab the Thomas Guide, and take care of business. Pretty good money for summers and holidays work.:SIB

Word, my bruth-uh. :SIB Thomas Guide is in the Delivery Man's Hall of Fame....for those pit bulls, you'd need to take Cesar Milan with you to deal with those pack leaders...and you're probably right about "how minorities feel in white neighborhoods"...if the shoe were on the other foot, and a black guy were walking down the street in lilly white Simi Valley at 1am, he might find himself a little nervous about some "locals" (read "the cops") messing with him...

What part of LA are you, JC?

My first job after college was actually as a cartographer for Thomas Bros. I went from using them to making them. They were a great local company for about 50 years, then they got bought out by Rand McNally, now most of their work is done in India. A sad sight they've become, my bruth-uh.

Me? I've lived in just about every party of town, but now I'm in the Santa Clarita Valley. Not a fashionable address for the old school LA snobs. A West-side, fashionista friend of mine calls it "Magic Sh*thouse," as a play on "Magic Mountain." Its 30 miles from nearest civilization.

As a fan of good cartography, I really appreciated those old Thomas Guides. So well drawn. Dad swore by them. He was with a local TV News department, and got radio calls to every part of SoCal to do news stories. If he was in Mar Vista, and got a call to an address in La Habra, that Thomas Guide was a life saver. He had to find all kinds of addresses. 'Guess its under new ownership now though.

A friend of mine was from Saugus. He refused to call it Santa Clarita Valley when they incorporated. I drive past there on my SB-Vegas commute. 126 to 5 to 14, or sometimes cut thru Magic Mtn Pkwy and that other big street that I can't remember.

That whole Thomas Guide sort-of culture is disappearing. The onboard navigation and Mapquest/Google Maps keep getting better. I still prefer the paper maps.
