There is much more to the Jena story than the little blurb you provided. You forgot to mention the group of white students who attacked a black student, hitting him in the head with a bottle. The result, probation. Or the white student who pulled a shotgun on three black students. The black students wrestled the gun from him and were charge with thief and battery. The kid who pulled out the gun was not charged at all. There are many aspects to this story from the school arson, the DA, the school board overturning the principal?s initial response to the noose incident, and others.

I think that there is soooo much ignorance in many rural areas of this state, that it scares me. I wasn't going to post this, because I didn't feel it was pertinent. In fact, I only told my wife about this minor, yet disturbing, incident. I was in Alexandria, LA, on wednesday investigating some Hurricane Humberto claims. Alexandria is the city nearest Jena, which is a mere town of 3,000. I always stay at the same hotel when there. It is attached to the convention center and near a restaurant that I enjoy. Anyway, I pulled up at the hotel w/o reservation as usual, and found the parking lot full and a carnival atmosphere. There were dozens of unlicensed vendors distributing a variety of anti-Jena T-Shirts, flags, bumper stickers and the like.

Needless to say, the hotel was booked. I called a few other hotels and found no vacancy. A few minutes later, I spotted 2 white police men and a white official of some kind. As I approached, they eye-balled me top to bottom. I am the son of a Cuban-born mother, and a spanish-born father. All of my grandparents were born in Spain. Moving along, I reach the trio of "gentlemen", and ask if they can recommend a nearby hotel outside of Alexandria, and if they feel that Natchitoches (1 hour northwest) hotels would also be booked. I explained that I am from New Orleans, and am in town for the night on business. They answered my questions, and I thanked them and stepped away. At this point, I was standing about 10 feet away from the "gentlemen" placing a phone call when I heard them talking amongst themselves. That's when I heard one of them say something to this effect: ...its bad enough we gotts to deal with all these Atlanta spooks, now we gotta put up with a damn mexican from New Orleans.....

I though little of it, and moved on about my business. I was not hurt or offended, because what these men spewed was pure ignorance.

Its wrong and any pubic officials who have that kind of attitude should not be in office or hold police positions.

Granted they are probably working overtime and being away from their families trying to control the Jena crowds, but that does not give them the right to say that kind of thing about any citizen.

Thats always been something that really gets me about cops and I have been around alot in my time. They love to tell their storys in the locker room atmosphere about how the guy in cuffs tried to run from them and tripped, or how they had to tase a guy five times, or ..... you get the picture.
They take it as a game of us against them.
Its almost a one upmanship and its the public that gets the brunt of it.

And I also realize that they deal with the worst of the worst on most days, but if you are going to take the wrong attitude about it, turn in your badge and get another job.

On that note I will relate this sideline. I am a white american of swedish decent. The other day I am in a hardware store. The aisles are narrow and stuff is stacked all over. I am walking down the aisle and a black man and woman come up behind me and if they were trying to get by I did not notice as I continued up the aisle. All of a sudden I heard a loud " excuse me " from behind me. As they passed they gave me a look like I was intentionally trying to hold up them getting by me when I didnt even know they were behind me.

When I run into that in public I usaully have no trouble saying..... yeh well fawk you. And I would say it to black, white or green in the same situation.

Its a crazy world , but we live here.

This is the one picture that really disturbs me.

I don't care what the circumstances were, the elderly black man in his sunday suit with his hat,
did not deserve this kind of treatment even back in the 50s.

that mentality is what has to go in America.

Its wrong and now even in 2007 we can find cases of exactly the same type of treatment for black americans and other minorities.

heres some stats... im a crim major so i've been studying this shit up and down

since we're talking about juveniles...

73.7 million in the population(Census Bureau 07)
Account for 25% of pop.
51% male, 49% female

now narrowed down by race-
15% black juveniles
white(non-hispanic) 58.4%
hispanic - 20%

Arrests from the UCR (2005)
84.7% adults
15.3% juveniles(0-18 yrs)
4.6% of them are under 15.
of the 15.3% juveniles, 15.8% account for violent crimes and 26% property crimes.

now narrow this down by race for ALL crimes.(violent and property)
White is 70%
Black is 30%
(about the same for juveniles arrested)

BUT, when we start talking about Juvenile violent crime... its 50% black, and that is jsut the crimes that are cleared... not ALL.

Its disproportionate. Is it because the police are racists? Is it because blacks are more likely to feel economic strain? Is it because blacks have some kind of sterotype? Is it because blacks are more likely to live in poverty?

I do agree that police do have some kind of racism toward minorities... not JUST blacks.

and w/ jena 6, the guy still sittin in jail has already been adjudicated, and he is a chronic affender.

and I dont know much info on this case... but why isn't this being categorized as a hate crime? If it was the other way around... it would have been classified as one...

and i havent done any research on jena 6.. it might be classifed as a hate crime for all i know now....



I just wish everyone could live with equality. we all know that isn't going to happen, but I am a firm believer of this...

but then again... i am SO tired of hearing "is it because of I'm black" and this DWB(driving while black). If you get pulled over because your black and you have nothing illegal in your car or warrants... then no big deal.

police just cant pull you over for being a minority, you are protected in the 4th amendment... they must have probably cause... and being black is not.
