I thought I would post this - maybe some of you will find it thought provoking and an interesting thing to think about. The reason it's coming up, is that my son's homework assignment was to ask this question of 10 people and do a mini-book project on it.

What's the most important thing about being an American?

I really had to stop and think (and honestly, Google) about this. I'd be curious to see what some of you would say, if you care to spare a moment. Kind of an interesting exercise. After a few notes, this is what I am landing on for now (I have about six different sentences, all kind of the same):

"To maintain the courage to celebrate and protect freedom in all its forms - and challenge myself to help ensure it for future generations."

A paraphrased comment I read recently [can't recall where]about our responsibility as American's :

To unite with our neighbors in the promotion of collective respect for individual rights.

Being a American does not mean much any more when persons can walk across your border and have more rights than you.

Being a American means, you better not get sick.

Being a American use to mean that your vote counted, now the elected go to Washington and sell their vote to the highest bidding corpration.

Being a American means watching your freedoms being taken away and nobody says a thing.

Like Vic Morrow said, I'am an American, doesn't that mean anything, anymore?

This is funny. I was gonna say the same thing you posted but in my words so here goes.

"To maintain the courage to celebrate and protect freedom in all its forms, no matter how easily conned most americans can be - and challenge myself to help ensure it for future generations. And fight like help to keep pushing an agenda even tho you are trying to help out a few numnuts who will never get it."[/QUOTE]
In closing i saw the president poll in the discussion thread and the same very dopes who voted for Bush just surge ahead and vote for the same pigs again. Its sad. It really is. Now when i throw around the word gullible just look at who they like. Just a terrible glutton for more punishment. There really is nothing you can do to change their minds. These are very naive people. This farce of a war yet they are right there to support the same party. How many freaking things has to go wrong to wake these fukers up? Outing Cia agents, selling ports to the Arabs. ON and on and on yet they surge ahead with the same pathetic pieces of shit. Sorry Chad but i had to vent.

hey sponge,
isn't america supposed to be about celebrating diversity and having the ability to choose and vote and make your own decisions?

stop telling other people how to vote. jeezuz christ man... so if people don't vote for the things YOU want, they are dumb and clueless... I bet you want to just round them all up and quiet down their voice.

IMO believe one of major high lights of being an American--Is living in the land of opportunity Chad.

Any person with ambition and a good attitude has no limits.

--on the flip side--despite numerous attributes of being an American there is the half empty crowd that can only find negatives to whine about--even if question posed asks for positives.

Opportunity generally will never help them because their attitude does not permit them to see any.

These people will generally never have a pot to piss in or window to throw it out--only excuses.

Good post. I got a similar feeling reading this thread. It is also of note that the same negative responders are completely intolerant of other people's opinions. Sad, really. For them, that is;)

Almost missed this post. Strange to see such a closed-mided individual. This type of person has little room for growth imo.

I always associated being an American with "Rugged Individualism"

Ideally this means you work hard. Keep your head down and take care of your family with the right mixture of brains and sweat.

You mind your own business, live and let live. If you don't like your neighbor you build a fence and shut the F up. If you do, you invite him over for a BBQ.

You come together to serve your community when needed, and defend your country when in danger.

You explore new frontiers and never play it safe.

Basically you are free to do what you want, so long as you don't prevent others from doing what they want.

<sniffle sniffle>

Hey Marine this has nothing to do with telling people who to vote for and everything to do with throwing some water in your face and waking you up. Hell, what can i expect from a guy in the armed forces who just saw a pig lie us into war yet still support him. Gullible, gullible, gullible.

Well, finally i agree with you. I will never "get it" how the facts in the world are right in front of your face but you somehow are to blind to see them. What is really unfortunate is how easily you get conned. What does it take to reach the age of reason?

Because my interpretation of something is different than yours does not make you any more right than it makes me.

Stop telling me how to vote.
Maybe we should just cancel the elections next november and let you pick for us.
