finally gonna take the plunge....the old 36 inch mitsubishi is gonna last forever...and i probably won`t.....so i`m gonna spring for something extravagant.....

i`m lookin` at the 46 or 52 inch sony with the bravia engine(kdl-52 or 46 w3000)....the picture`s amazing....might even spring for the panasonic upconverting dvd/vcr recorder.....wtf,you only live once...

what i need to know is whether you need the hdmi cable to get the full hd experience.....these cables run around $120 clams in my neck of the woods....how many of these will i need(hopefully only one)?

and what other accesories am i gonna need to get the full benefit from this monster?....

thanks in advance for any info or advice.....

dude,
dont buy those cables at retail stores. you can get them super cheap at places like amazon, overstock (just got the 6.6ft one there for 41$) and other places.

if you are doing to pick up an upconverting dvd player... why not just go for the gold and get the HD-DVD or BluRay?

I recenly splurged for an hd-dvd player and WHOA NELLY!
must have dude!

absolutely use the best hdmi cables you can get your hands on. The only diffferences in the cables.. you are probably going to want the 300 series, not the 400 series... 300 series is for 1080i and 400 is for 1080p if i am not mistaken.

oh, and before i forget... dont waste your money on a combo dvd/vcr player man... seriously... you are going to get a hugely hi tech home theatre set up, and the you are going to play a vhs tape on it?

marine....thanks for the excellent advice....i`ll get the high end hdmi cables as you suggested....

i think the blue ray thing is a no-go for me....i have lots of dvd`s and tapes.....i tape alot of old sports stuff(old boxing and mma stuff)just so i can refer back and see guys in old matches for gambling purposes....can`t see blue-raying this crap.......the dvd recorder is 1080p(whatever that means) and it supposedly upconverts regular dvd recordings to near hi def...or at least enhanced def........i like that cause i can`t re-record all the dvd movies and stuff i already have...

this sony isn`t quite the gold standard(the xbr series is),but it`s very high end stuff(still the bravia engine series...has almost the same options).......and the 52" is almost overkill for the way i have my furniture laid out...i`ll probably look like this  after a month or two of close proximity exposure.....lol

but, if i go the way of the buggy whip on my couch from t.v. screen radiation, then i`ll have died happy.........

really appreciate the help....thanks for takin` the time....

layin`.....i miss the action....hopefully i`ll get back in the mix by the ufc card on the 20th.......thanks for the kind words....

YOU and kickserv are da`heart of the mma discussions....i`m just old some clitorectomy scraps..

thanks guys....

are you going 1080P? To my knowledge 1080p is not very visible on screens 50 inches and under. You would have to be like 2 feet from a 42 inch tv to see the difference.

1080p will not be broadcast for years through cable or sattellite.

No why did I buy a 1080p tv????:com:

It may not be broadcast, but if you have a PS3 Blue Ray player - 1080p is amazing - the picture is MUCH better than even broadcast HD IMO.

You have the right type of TV - now you just need to hook up something that will showcase it's features. Unfortunately, broadcast TV cannot do that currently.

just an fyi for people buying new tvs...

unless you are doing some serious high end stuff, you are not going to see a difference between 1080i and 1080p. don't get caught in the hype of spending more $$$$ to get a 1080p vice a 1080i.

well,got the t.v.....the 52" sony.....and the panasonic dvd/vcr.....pretty amazing stuff....

after i was able to figure it out, that is...

the manual was o.k. for general usage stuff...after the hook-up....but wasn`t much help in the actual hook-up...

hooking these components up wasn`t a picnic....trying to understand the multiple hdmi inputs/component video and audio inputs vs, regular vdeo inputs, all the settings/screen sizes(which picture settings were best for sports/movies/newscasts etc).... ....alot to digest....

when i first turned it on i was ready to put this monster back in the box and go back to my analog....the presets from the factory were way to strong......i thought i was gonna go blind....but,once i played with it....changed the picture settings and stuff,it was fantastic...i don`t know how they can make this technology all that much better...

if the 52" screen is a bit much for certain programming, you can change the screen size and acuity to "standard"(which is better for news, talk shows etc).....

certain programs show some distortion on certain settings (the screen settings are "zoom","wide zoom","standard" and "full"....

certain movies and sports look better on certain settings....i hate watching baseball until the postseason...but man, watching the shots from around the stadium in arizona last night was mind-blowing......i think watching a baseball game on hi-def is even more impressive than watching a football game...it`s incredible...it`s just ashamed that baseball sucks...can`t wait to see some boxing and mma.....

what really amazed me was the sound when i hooked up my old 55 pound n.e.c. receiver(22 years old-it could blow a wall out) to my old d.c.m. front and wall speakers....

the sound was unreal... i don`t know whether it was the 1080 dvd player or the t.v....i know i have no use for a sub-woofer...i heard sounds coming from everywhere...

voice zoom, sound booster, steady sound(i always hated the way the sound went up during commercials)...so much that i still don`t know.....but,it`s fun playing around with it...

it`s a fricking adult toy....

all things considered...now that i have it all hooked up and cranking,it was an excellent investment....

i would recommend one for anybody that was considering making the jump....if you aren`t familiar with all the new technology,be patient when hooking it up......play around with the hook-up...don`t get frustrated...

treat yourself....you only live once...

thanks for the comments and info,guys..a big help...

franky...i got the bravia kdl52w3000....they have a top of the line "xbr" series.....a step up from this for, from what i`ve read, another $500 to $1000 bucks...

but,i gotta say,i really don`t understand how much better these things can get...... so many bells and whistles on this one,i really didn`t need more crap......

this one`s suopposedly set up for upgrades...

it has a p.c.(computer) input(you can split the screen and watch t.v. and and the computer simultaneously...i think),all kinds of video game set-ups(i`ve never played a video game),3 hdmi jacks, pip features, picture freeze..........
