NFL ATS Records After a Bye Week

A lot of recreational sports bettors believe that a team coming off a bye week has an advantage. The handicapping theory is that team is playing on two weeks rest, so the team can use the extra week to heal bumps and bruises and also have the extra week to plan for the upcoming opponent.

There are two things wrong with using this as a flat betting system. The first would be momentum. The team may have just put together a winning streak and are running on all cylinders. With the off week, the odds are that they will lose some of their timing and their competitive edge. The second reason would be the lines-maker. If anything because of the public's misconception of the "coming off a bye week" advantage the lines-maker would shade the lines against the bye team.

Below we have listed the against the spread records of each NFL team in their game after the break.

Current Records Ending After the 1995 Football Season. (I updated!)

Washington Redskins 9-3

Arizona at Washington:

Was -9 (80%)

Arizona might need to rely on Tim Rattay at QB. Doesn't sound like the best situation for the Cards, even as they face a Washington team that stumbled to a loss last week in Green Bay.

Oddsmakers currently have the Redskins listed as 7-point favorites versus the Cardinals, while the game's total is sitting at 37.

The Cardinals lost to Carolina 25-10 as a 6-point favorite in Week 6. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (38.5).

Tim Rattay completed 12-of-24 passes for 159 yards with three interceptions for Arizona after replacing an injured Kurt Warner. Edgerrin James rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

The Redskins lost to Green Bay 17-14 as a 3-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (40.5).

Jason Campbell completed 21-of-37 passes for 217 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Chris Cooley caught nine passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Team records:
Arizona: 3-3 SU, 3-2-1 ATS
Washington: 3-2 SU, 2-1-2 ATS

Arizona most recently:
When playing in October are 2-8
When playing on grass are 5-5
After being outgained are 4-6
When playing outside the division are 2-8

Washington most recently:
When playing in October are 3-7
When playing on grass are 4-6
After outgaining opponent are 6-4
When playing outside the division are 4-6

A few trends to consider:
The total has gone OVER in 6 of Arizona's last 7 games on the road
The total has gone OVER in 9 of Arizona's last 12 games
The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Arizona's last 8 games when playing Washington
Arizona is 5-1-1 ATS in its last 7 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Washington's last 5 games
Washington is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing Arizona
The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Washington's last 7 games at home
Washington is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing at home against Arizona

The Redskins are having trouble putting teams away. Sunday's loss at Green Bay was the sixth time in the last year they've lost a game after leading at the half. "I guess we ain't learning our lesson," Clinton Portis told the Washington Post. Depending on the severity of Kurt Warner's injured left elbow, the Cardinals may threaten to make a playoff push or will quickly fall off the pace. Tim Rattay is not the answer at QB.

The Falcons have appeared on 'Monday Night Football' six times since Michael Vick was drafted in 2001. Considering the plight of the Falcons without Vick, it may be awhile before they see another Monday night. This is what a desperate team does: Goes for it on a fourth-and-one from its own 29. This is what a skilled team does; Converts it. Saints finally showed signs of life in winning at Seattle.

Baltimore at Buffalo:  :bed: :em38:

Baltimore -3 (70%)
34.5

A week after stifling the Rams to 10 first downs, the resurgent Ravens defense gets to sink their claws into the lame Bills offense. Buffalo, meanwhile, comes off its bye week with an extra seven days to ponder that Monday night collapse to the Cowboys.

Oddsmakers currently have the Ravens listed as 3-point favorites versus the Bills, while the game's total is sitting at 35.

The Ravens defeated St. Louis 22-3 as a 9-point favorite in Week 6. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (36.5).

Kyle Boller completed 18-of-30 passes for 182 yards with an interception for Baltimore, while Willis McGahee rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries

The Bills squandered a nine point lead late in the game, falling 25-24 to the undefeated Cowboys last time out. The Bills were 11-point underdogs in the contest, and the combined 49 points made it OVER the posted total of 45.5.

The Bills ran back two interceptions for touchdowns, and Terrence McGee ran 103 yards off a kick return for the other TD in the loss.

Current streak:
Baltimore has won 2 straight games.

Team records:
Baltimore: 4-2 SU, 1-5 ATS
Buffalo: 1-4 SU, 3-2 ATS

Baltimore most recently:
When playing in October are 5-5
When playing on turf are 7-3
After being outgained are 5-5
When playing outside the division are 9-1

Buffalo most recently:
When playing in October are 3-7
When playing on turf are 4-6
After being outgained are 4-6
When playing outside the division are 3-7

A few trends to consider:
Baltimore is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
Baltimore is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games when playing Buffalo
Baltimore is 7-3 SU in its last 10 games when playing Buffalo
Baltimore is 7-15 SU in its last 22 games on the road
Buffalo is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games at home
Buffalo is 10-4 ATS in its last 14 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Buffalo's last 6 games
Buffalo is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games at home

QB J.P. Losman may be healthy enough to play, but there's no guarantees that he'll regain his starting spot. The Ravens offense reached the end zone for the first time in 19 drives and the defense has allowed just 10 points in the last two games. The Nov. 5 Monday nighter at Pittsburgh should give us an accurate read on this team.

This looks like another trap, and the board is riddled with them!

Minnesota at Dallas:

Dal -9.5

Dallas believed they were the class of the NFC, but bettors are wondering now if that was mistaken belief. They get a softer challenge this week against Minnesota, who got a Herculean effort from rookie Adrian Peterson in beating the Bears in Week 6.

Oddsmakers currently have the Cowboys listed as 10-point favorites versus the Vikings, while the game's total is sitting at 47.

The Vikings edged Chicago 34-31 as a 4.5-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (35.5).

Adrian Peterson rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, while Tarvaris Jackson completed 9-of-23 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown.

The Cowboys lost to New England 48-27 as a 5-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (52.5).

Tony Romo completed 18-of-29 passes for 199 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while Terrell Owen hauled in six passes for 66 yards with a touchdown.

Team records:
Minnesota: 2-3 SU, 2-1-2 ATS
Dallas: 5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS

Minnesota most recently:
When playing in October are 4-6
When playing on turf are 4-6

When playing outside the division are 3-7

Dallas most recently:
When playing in October are 6-4
When playing on turf are 5-5
After being outgained are 6-4
When playing outside the division are 6-4

A few trends to consider:
Minnesota is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games when playing Dallas
Minnesota is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing Dallas
Minnesota is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games when playing on the road against Dallas
Minnesota is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing on the road against Dallas
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Dallas's last 6 games
Dallas is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Dallas's last 5 games when playing at home against Minnesota
Dallas is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games

Don't expect the Cowboys to suffer a crisis of confidence in losing to the Patriots. In fact, if Wade Phillips plays his cards right, the reality check might be the best thing to happen to his team. Adrian Peterson's 224 rushing yards on Sunday is the best single-game performance in Vikings' history. Even more impressive? It's the most allowed by the Bears in the 88 years of that franchise.

New England at Miami:

It looks like the biggest mismatch in decades and that's the way the oddsmakers see it too. New England (6-0) opened favored by 17 at Miami where the juggernaut Pats visit the 0-6 Dolphins, who have managed three upsets of the Pats in recent years.

Oddsmakers currently have the Patriots listed as 14-point favorites versus the Dolphins, while the game's total is sitting at 50?.

The Patriots defeated Dallas 48-27 as a 5-point favorite in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (52.5).

Tom Brady passed for 388 yards with five touchdown passes, while Wes Welker caught 11 passes for 124 yards with two touchdowns in the win.

The Dolphins lost to Cleveland 41-31 as a 4-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (45).

Cleo Lemon completed 24-of-43 passes for 256 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while also rushing in for a pair of touchdowns for Miami. Ronnie Brown rushed for 101 yards on 1 carries.

Current streak:
New England has won 6 straight games.

The Patriots have played 360 minutes of football this season -- and have trailed for just 18 of those minutes. New England gets the first of its three bye weeks this season when it plays at Miami on Sunday. The Dolphins will extend their franchise-record losing streak to 10 games when they host the Patriots on Sunday.

San Fransisco at New York Giants::s8:

NYG -9 (71%)

San Francisco has scored just 10 points total in its past two games. With a bye week to prepare, can they handle a Giants team that won its fourth straight Monday night and which has covered four in a row as well?

Oddsmakers currently have the Giants listed as 10-point favorites versus the 49ers, while the game's total is sitting at 40.

The 49ers lost to Baltimore 9-7 as a 4-point underdog in Week 5. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (34.5).

Trent Dilfer completed 12-of-19 passes for 12 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Frank Gore rushed for 52 yards on 16 carries.

Eli Manning threw for over 300 yards in leading the Giants to a convincing 31-10 win over the Falcons last week. The Giants easily covered the 5-point spread, while the 41 points fell UNDER the posted total of 44.

Manning completed 27-of-39 passes for 303 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the 4-2 Giants.

Current streak:
San Francisco has lost 3 straight games.
New York has won 4 straight games.

Team records:
San Francisco: 2-3 SU, 2-2-1 ATS
New York: 4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS

San Francisco most recently:

When playing outside the division are 4-6

New York most recently:
When playing in October are 9-1
When playing on turf are 4-6
After outgaining opponent are 9-1
When playing outside the division are 5-5

A few trends to consider:
San Francisco is 6-1 SU in their last 7 games when playing NY Giants
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of San Francisco's last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of San Francisco's last 5 games when playing NY Giants
San Francisco is 4-1 SU in their last 5 games when playing on the road against NY Giants

NY Giants are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of the NY Giants last 5 games when playing San Francisco
The total has gone UNDER in 10 of the NY Giants last 14 games at home

If Alex Smith returns from injury, expect the 49ers to use more shotgun formations on offense in order to combat the Giants' pass rush. Only two teams have allowed more than the 18 sacks given up by the 49ers. Just like last season, the Giants are riding a hot streak in the first half of the season, having won four straight following their win in Atlanta. But will they avoid the kind of collapse they suffered in the second half last year?

Tampa Bay at Detroit:

DET -2.5

Tampa Bay has won four of five, but faces small dog status visiting Detroit this week. The Lions were routed by the Redskins prior to their bye week and have surrendered 117 points in their past three games. Expect Jeff Garcia, who was left for dead as a player here, to try to pile on that defensive misery.

Oddsmakers currently have the Lions listed as 2-point favorites versus the Buccaneers, while the game's total is sitting at 43.

The Buccaneers defeated Tennessee 13-10 as a 2.5-point favorite in Week 6. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (37).

Jeff Garcia completed 20-of-31 passes for 274 yards with a touchdown, while Joey Galloway caught four passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

The Lions lost to Washington 34-3 as a 4-point underdog in Week 5. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (44.5).

Jon Kitna completed 16-of-29 passes for 106 yards with two interceptions and Kevin Jones rushed for 48 yards on 11 carries.

Team records:

Tampa Bay is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Tampa Bay's last 8 games

Dating back to his days in Philadelphia last year, QB Jeff Garcia has now thrown 164 consecutive regular-season passes without an interception. It's the longest active streak in the NFL and the longest of his career. Jeff Garcia, as noted above, hasn't thrown an interception all season, but perhaps his former team (from 2005) will know how to force him into a miscue. Only Dallas (10) has intercepted more passes this season than Detroit (nine).

Sage Rosenfels vs. Kerry Collins? It's not likely, but possible if Vince Young's quad is too sore and if Houston has tired of Matt Schaub's mediocre work. The Titans face the Texans in an AFC South battle Sunday.

Oddsmakers currently have the Titans listed as 1-point favorites versus the Texans, while the game's total is sitting at 38?.

The Titans lost to Tampa Bay 13-10 as a 2.5-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (37).

Vince Young completed 11-of-14 passes for 120 yards with an interception for Tennessee and LenDale White rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.

The Texans lost to Jacksonville 37-17 as a 6.5-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (37).

Matt Schaub completed 19-of-31 passes for 259 yards with an interception for Houston, while Kevin Walter caught 12 passes for 160 yards.

Even if Vince Young misses time with a right leg injury, the Titans might be able to survive. Backup Kerry Collins directed a nice 86-yard drive to tie the score, only to see the Bucs win on a late field goal. Let's see, there are problems with the red-zone offense. Problems with the running game. Dumb penalties. Missed blocks. That shine on the Texans' season is starting to fade.

Good news for Larry Johnson: He rushed for 119 yards and his first TD of the season in the win over Cincinnati. The bad news: He fumbled for the first time in 470 touches going back to more than a year ago. Daunte Culpepper threw two interceptions, lost a fumble and was sacked six times in the Raiders' eighth consecutive loss to San Diego. Are we getting closer to the JaMarcus Russell era?

The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Philadelphia's last 5 games
Philadelphia is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games at home
Philadelphia is 8-4 SU in its last 12 games

It was a nice bend-but-don't-break effort for the banged-up Eagles defense in the win against the Jets. On four of their 10 drives, N.Y. drove inside the 13-yard line but failed to reach the end zone. Funny how a team with an offense that's brutal to watch might have the league's most exciting player. Hopefully, the Bears coaches will have the good sense to put the ball in Devin Hester's hands as much as possible.

St. Louis at Seattle:

SEA -9.5 (how many 9.5 point lines this week?)
39.5

How bad are the Rams? Bad enough that they are still 10-points dogs against a Seattle team that was dominated two weeks in a row. St. Louis will need more than the 10 first downs they mustered against the Ravens to keep this one close.

Oddsmakers currently have the Seahawks listed as 9-point favorites versus the Rams, while the game's total is sitting at 40.

The Rams lost to Baltimore 22-3 as a 9-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (36.5).

Gus Frerotte completed 19-of-36 passes for 208 yards with five interceptions for St. Louis and Brian Leonard was held to 18 yards on 12 carries.

The Seahawks lost to New Orleans 28-17 as a 6-point favorite in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (43).

Matt Hasselbeck completed 26-of-43 passes for 362 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while Bobby Engram caught nine passes for 120 yards.

Current streak:

The total has gone UNDER in 5 of St. Louis's last 6 games on the road
St. Louis is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games when playing on the road against Seattle

The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Seattle's last 5 games at home
Seattle is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing St. Louis
The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Seattle's last 10 games

Relief is on the way. Injured quarterback Marc Bulger says he will be back in the lineup Sunday against Seattle. WR Isaac Bruce is also expected to return, and RB Steven Jackson has an outside shot of playing. In his last two games, Shaun Alexander has rushed for 60 yards on 25 carries, his worst two-game stretch in five years. Even Alexander couldn't find fault in Seahawks fans booing him during the loss to the Saints.

New York Jets at Cincinnati:

CIN -6.5
47

New York Jets ride a three-game losing to Cincinnati where they face a Bengals team on an even worse roll (four straight losses). History points to a Jets win as they have beaten the Bengals five straight dating back to 1992.

Oddsmakers currently have the Bengals listed as 6-point favorites versus the Jets, while the game's total is sitting at 46.

The Jets lost to Philadelphia 16-9 as a 4.5-point underdog in Week 6. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (43.5).

Chad Pennington completed 11-of-21 passes for 128 yards with an interception, while Thomas Jones rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries.

The Bengals lost to Kansas City 27-20 as a 2.5-point favorite in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (44).

Carson Palmer completed 26-of-43 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and T.J. Houshmandzadeh caught eight passes for 145 yards with two touchdowns.

The total has gone UNDER in 4 of the NY Jets last 5 games when playing Cincinnati
NY Jets are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games on the road
NY Jets are 1-6 SU in their last 7 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Cincinnati's last 5 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Cincinnati's last 5 games when playing NY Jets
The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Cincinnati's last 12 games
Cincinnati is 5-12-1 ATS in its last 18 games at home

It'll be the battle of underachievers when the Jets travel to Cincinnati on Sunday. Oh, and speaking of underachievers -- is there anybody in the tri-state area who still thinks Chad Pennington should start at QB? The Bengals have lost four straight for the first time in the 69 games with Marvin Lewis as the head coach. It might help if they could convert a third down -- they're just 1 for the last 18 attempts.

Indianapolis at Jacksonville:

Ind -3 (-120) (76%)
44.5

Jacksonville is on a roll but Indianapolis has proven to be a roll-wrecker in recent years. The Jags are 4-1 ATS past five games here against Manning's gang, while the OVER has prevailed in five of the past six meetings here. It looks like a great Monday Nighter after last week's stinker.

Oddsmakers currently have the Colts listed as 3-point favorites versus the Jaguars, while the game's total is sitting at 45?.

The Colts defeated Tampa Bay 33-14 as a 9-point favorite in Week 5. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (45).

Kenton Keith rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries for Indianapolis, while Peyton Manning completed 29-of-37 passes for 253 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

The Jaguars defeated Houston 37-17 as a 6.5-point favorite in Week 6. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (37).

Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, while David Garrard completed 22-of-34 passes for 221 yards with two touchdowns.

Current streak:
Indianapolis has won 5 straight games.
Jacksonville has won 4 straight games.

Team records:
Indianapolis: 5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS
Jacksonville: 4-1 SU, 3-2 ATS

Indianapolis most recently:
When playing in October are 9-1
When playing on grass are 7-3
After outgaining opponent are 8-2
When playing within the division are 7-3

Jacksonville most recently:
When playing in October are 6-4
When playing on grass are 6-4
After outgaining opponent are 6-4
When playing within the division are 5-5

A few trends to consider:
Indianapolis is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Indianapolis's last 6 games when playing on the road against Jacksonville
Indianapolis is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games on the road
Indianapolis is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Jacksonville's last 6 games when playing at home against Indianapolis
Jacksonville is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
Jacksonville is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games when playing Indianapolis
Jacksonville is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games when playing at home against Indianapolis

The last time the Colts faced the Jags, Indy gave up 375 rushing yards in a 44-17 loss last December. The Colts are allowing 105.4 yards rushing this season, a figure they'll need to get close to in order to maintain their spotless record. The Jags gave up 282 rushing yards in losing their opener -- and have given up a combined total of 200 rushing yards in their next four games, all wins. But the big test comes at home Monday night against the Colts.

Passing for now.
