ok guys here we go with the breakdowns....
1st up is my strongest play of the say and strongest play of the young season.....I hate to say play of the year but I am in love with this play!!! (that means you know what side you should be on :mj07: )
The play is VMI -8 vrs. Northern Colorado
VMI is a very explosive team and returns a lot of talent. SG Reggie Williams is going to lead this team in scoring, and my guess would be he is the D1 scoring leader for the 2nd straight year when this season is over. He is an NBA talent and loves to jack the ball when hes open....and even when hes not. Coach Duggar Baucom has a not so traditional strategy with this squad. He commands 3 things from his team each game. Take 100 shots, shoot 50 3's, and create 30 turnovers on defense. Now obviously these things do not always happen but these are the 3 main keys implemented to this team for every game they play, which is why they are able to drop 100+ in any game they play. Now this team is good....VERY good, and I see them going dancing this year. Last year they set records in points per game, assists, steals, and 3 pters made. The VMI downfall last year was their press and trap defense that was easily beat. That was the regular season. In the conf tourney, coach Baucom ran zone defense and had much better success. I think that carries over to this season and they win by bigger margins. The other major plus to this team is that just about anyone on the court at any time is well capable of draining a 3 which makes them very dangers and teams to think twice about how to D them up.
Their opp. Northern Colorado was awful last year. a 4-24 record and last place finish in the Big Sky, which they are predicted to finish last in once again. Taibi is pretty much their only threat and I really REALLY doubt he will be hot enough to keep them in the game. They are still trying to build up their program and this year is going to be another growing pain. They dont have the athleticism, size, or talent to match up with VMI and should be out of this game well before half-time.
A VMI win here by 20 or more is a definite possibility but a safer bet is they win by 15.
On to my next play at Drexel -3.
Many people may be fooled at this line, Penn was a good team last year but last spring they lost 58% of their scoring, and 1/2 of their rebounds to graduation ceremonies. They return 2 starters from last years 22-9 team, with the leading returning scorer grabbing 11 per game last year. They are extremely weak inside and this is why they lose this game by more than the spread. The loss of those 3 starters from Penn is huge and Penn will have a down year because of it. They have absolutely no inside presence now after losing 3 year leader and block machine Steve Danley.
Elegar on Drexel is a complete monster. He will be an all-conference 1st team selection without question. He is very explosive and reminds me of Chris Webber at Michigan. Drexel is also still heated over last years snub to the big dance and is going to make sure they get there this year. My best friend whom plays D2 ball had the opportunity of losing to Drexel in an exhibition game 2 weeks ago. He said Elegar is a stud and the Drexel team can win the CAA. While many know about Elegar, few known about the above average guard play by Drexel that will be a key in this years success and todays game vrs Penn. Look out for the speedy guard Hawthorne on Drexel to create offense away from Elegar causing more problems for the Penn coaches to figure out.
and on to the 3rd game of the day....
Western Carolina +1
W. Carolina is a sleeper this year, and I think they could be quite good. They have a phenom in Nick Aldridge who had a great season last year averaging over 18 per game but being out shown by Davidsons Stephen Curry for Freshman of the year honors. WC was strong last year into December where they lost 8 of 9 and then finished the season with a 5 game losing streak. The team morale was crushed after one of their own was seriously injured in a car accident. He recovered fully but the team never did. This year is a fresh start and they will come out strong in my opinion. Especially vrs a weak Bowling Green team who lost their #1 scorer from last year. Ryne Hamblet is BG's #1 threat this year and is a big time player. If WC can contain him and play the tempo they want, they can win this game straight up, which is what I believe happens today.
