best tv for the $ is the sony bravia xbr4 series either 46" or 52", reviewed by many sites including cnet.com, rated as one of the best tvs on market

panasonic's 58" Pz770u is a great one for $1000 more

52" BRAVIA? XBR? series LCD Flat Panel HDTV

AWESOME TV

$4,299.99

just a heads up when making your decision on the size of the TV.

You get spoiled watching the vibrant color of these LCD's and end up wishing you had a bigger screen.

Especially if you like to flake out on the couch and are a good 10'-11' from the screen.

Eternal where/who did you work for.. Sony outlet?

Worked for Circuit, back when they were on commission, and you could do your own install work on the side. Starting 3+ years ago they decided they didn't want to pay people anything decent anymore, and started kicking all their good employees (managers too) out the door. When I was there most everyone knew virtually everything about the products and were aud/vid enthusiasts. Today they just hire high school/college age people and train them basic selling methods and the "brouchure basics". Not that there is anything wrong with that, for it's just fine for most customers, but it has hurt the company a lot. In Dec. '04 CCs stock price was around $18, today it sits at $6.50. And it's only that high because there are rumors that they will be bought out.(Sears, possibly)

Plasma is thin ... couple of inches, where as rear projection has a cabinet, about 20 inches for the Sony, less for the Samsung.

Rear projections have a more limited viewing angle as the source is directional.

Plasma have a higher potential of burn in and are more expensive.

A great article breaking down all the technology. Officially, the Sony SXRD is LCoS technolgogy (Liquid Crystal on Silicone).

Rear projections:

CNET is a great source for reviews and info on tvs.

I was looking at getting their editor's choice, the pioneer kuro 50 inch plasma. It supposedly has the truest blacks which typically means most realistic picture. I am considering the xbr too but was a little worried about some reviews I've read about ghosting during rapid movements (sports) that is common with lcds.

Hey Dr. I have been doing some reasearch and I will probably make a purchase in the next couple of months, but do you prefer LCD or Plasma. I am leaning towards the Plasma, but all my friends tell me I should go LCD. Looking to get a 50' TV.

I have a 56" Sony LCD. I paid $3,400 for this TV in October. I looked at the Bravia, but didn't feel it's worth the extra money. Only bad thing is my HD keeps flaking & I have Time Warner Cable which they suck. Right now, the damn thing isn't working and I'm waiting until Wednesday to get someone off their ass and over to fix the damn problem.

destructor, was it an xbr4? a bravia is not necessarily a xbr4....

c20916,
it really depends how far you will be sitting away from tv, lighting in room, will you mainly be viewing sports (espn) or movies? there are so many factors that come into play...where located in room etc etc

both tvs are great, IMHO the best 3 tv out there for your $ are the 3 mentioned in this thread, i think 1 is a plasma (panasonic) and other 2 are lcd. The pioneer is a great tv!!
