GAME NOTES: The 12th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers are aiming for their sixth consecutive 8-0 start to a season as they do battle with city rival Duquesne this evening. All seven of Pitt's wins have come at home by double figures, as the squad has yet to be tested. The Panthers are coming off a 78-52 decision over Toledo, and they have held their last five opponents to fewer than 60 points. That should come as no surprise, as Pitt seems to excel at the defensive end of the floor every season. Duquesne opened the 2007-08 campaign with six consecutive wins, but the team dropped a 77-73 decision at Drake on Saturday. Still, the Dukes are 3-0 at home thus far and figure to enter tonight's clash with some confidence. Pitt owns a 44-31 lead in the all-time series with Duquesne.
Opponents are only managing 53.7 ppg against Pittsburgh on 35.8 percent shooting from the floor, including 27.9 percent accuracy from three-point range. The Panthers are scoring 84.0 ppg on 48.4 percent shooting from the field at the offensive end. Sam Young has been the top performer for Pitt, as he is netting 18.0 ppg on 63.3 percent shooting from the field, including 56.3 percent from behind the arc. Young is also tops on the boards with 9.0 rpg, while teammate DeJuan Blair checks in with 10.3 ppg and 8.3 rpg. The third and final double-digit scorer in the lineup is Mike Cook with 10.1 ppg. Young scored 17 points in Saturday's win over Toledo, and Cook pitched in 14 points. As for Blair, he came off the bench to contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Panthers finished that contest with 21 assists against only seven turnovers and limited the Rockets to 34.5 percent shooting from the field.
Duquesne is racking up 92.3 ppg on 49.2 percent shooting from the floor, and the club is limiting opponents to 67.7 ppg on 34.5 percent efficiency from the field. The Dukes are outrebounding opponents by 7.0 rpg, a key to their 6-1 record. Kojo Mensah leads four double-digit scorers with 16.4 ppg, and Kieron Achara checks in with 13.9 ppg. Shawn James adds 13.1 ppg and 7.9 rpg, while Bill Clark rounds out the foursome with 10.9 ppg. Against Drake on Saturday, James came through with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots. Achara pitched in 14 points off the bench, and Mensah tallied 12 points. Unfortunately, the Dukes turned the ball over 24 times and shot a lackluster 8- of-30 from three-point range.
Go with Pitt in this game, as it will get the job done against its Steel City rival. The Panthers are clearly a major contender in the Big East Conference, one of the nation's premier leagues.
