December 6, 2007 - A trip to a third-consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship title game is on the line when No. 5 Appalachian State University hosts No. 6 Richmond in a national semifinal matchup on Friday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The nationally televised contest on ESPN2 is set for 8 p.m.
NOTING FRIDAY'S MATCHUP
? Appalachian (11-2) is making its third-straight and fifth-overall appearance in the national semifinals while Richmond (11-2) is making its first-ever trip to the final four.
? The Mountaineers are 2-2 in two previous trips to the national semis. They lost to Marshall (24-10) in 1987 and at Montana (19-16 ? OT) in 2000. The Apps defeated Southern Conference-rival Furman in 2005 (29-23) and Youngstown State (49-24) last season to advance to the national championship game.
? ASU is 3-2 all-time versus UR. The teams? last matchup came in the first round of the 1987 NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, where the Sparky Woods-led Mountaineers came away with a 20-3 victory.
? A victory would be Appalachian?s 11-straight in the postseason, which would set the FCS/I-AA record for consecutive postseason wins in contiguous years. ASU?s 10-straight postseason triumphs over the past three seasons match the record set by Georgia Southern from 1999-2001. Youngstown State won 15-straight postseason games from 1993-99, but wasn?t part of the playoff field in 1995, ?96 and ?98.
? The Mountaineers are looking to become the first team since Georgia Southern from 1998-2000 to advance to three-consecutive national championship games.
? Appalachian is 10-0 all-time when playing on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU and have won 11-straight nationally televised contests overall, including wins this season over Michigan (Big Ten Network) and Western Carolina (ESPNU).
? The Apps and Spiders have two common opponents this season ? James Madison, which ASU defeated, 28-27, and UR downed, 17-16, and Wofford, which ASU lost to, 42-31, and UR topped, 21-10.
? Both squads feature Walter Payton Award finalists at running back in ASU?s Kevin Richardson and Richmond?s Tim Hightower. The nation?s second-leading active rusher, Richardson has 1,471 yards from scrimmage as a senior (1,154 rushing, 317 receiving) while Hightower ranks sixth nationally with 1,829 yards on the ground this season
