Report: Dolphins, Parcells near 4-year deal to lead football operations

By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer
December 20, 2007

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Bill Parcells has a home in South Florida. He's about to have a job there, too.

Parcells and Miami owner Wayne Huizenga agreed Wednesday on a four-year contract to be the Dolphins' vice president of football operations, according to ESPN, which employs the two-time Super Bowl-winning coach as an analyst.

The move was swift and somewhat surprising. Parcells was on the cusp of accepting a job to rebuild the Atlanta Falcons, then rebuked them Wednesday afternoon -- having apparently struck a deal with Miami.

The Dolphins declined comment, only saying no contract has been signed. No one at Huizenga's business office was authorized to comment when reached Thursday morning by The Associated Press.

Miami's players were also caught off-stride by the news, which broke after practice.

"I don't know anything," defensive end Jason Taylor said.

So, for the second time in less than a week, an off-field story is dominating the conversation at Miami's training complex.

The first revelation came last Friday: Huizenga had been in talks about selling the team to two real estate developers for about $1.1 billion, although it seems that deal has since unraveled and there's no immediate plans to sell even a portion of the franchise.

And now this: Parcells, who previously coached the Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys, is apparently set to return to the NFL.

"Really?" defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday said when told by The AP about Parcells' apparent interest in the Dolphins. "You can't control it. But somebody like the Big Tuna, regardless of who's in the front office or who's not, brings a lot of respect and a lot of credibility with him. ... If you're a free agent out there, that might draw you in."

Parcells' apparent return didn't seem to be a surprise in Dallas, where he retired as coach after last season.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones, the son of Dallas owner Jerry Jones, said Parcells was always intrigued "not just in the coaching part, but putting the team together, running the organization, trainers to fields to scouting department. It was always a huge interest to him."

Added cornerback Anthony Henry: "Him making another approach to get back into the football is something that the whole league can really respect and look forward to seeing him back out there."

When the Falcons announced Parcells turned them down -- while also releasing that he was in negotiations with the Dolphins -- several Miami players were playing cards and dominoes in the locker room.

"We met with him this morning to complete the contract. At that time, we were made aware by Parcells that he was considering a revised offer from the Miami Dolphins," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said. "He later informed us that he would not be signing a contract with us."

Many Dolphins immediately turned their attention to the television, seeking more information. Clearly, the mere mention of Parcells coming to Miami created an immediate buzz.

"I have a lot of respect for what he's been able to do in other places and I'd expect, if he did come in here, for him to do the same," Holliday said. "I don't know what's going to happen upstairs. I have no idea. I have a lot of respect for (GM) Randy Mueller, as well. But my interest is in what's best for this team and getting us in the right direction."

With his team mired in the longest playoff drought in franchise history -- six years and counting -- Huizenga has long sought different ways of doing exactly that. If that contract gets signed, bringing in the 66-year-old Parcells might wind up being the latest big Huizenga move.

In January 2004, he hired Miami's greatest player, Dan Marino, as senior vice president of football operations, a job created just for him. Marino resigned from the loosely defined role 22 days later, saying he didn't want to change his lifestyle.

Later that year, Huizenga hired coach Nick Saban away from LSU; he lasted only two seasons in Miami before bolting after the 2006 campaign to return to college football at Alabama.

"Bill Parcells," Holliday said, pausing and smiling. "That's a big name

just another slap in the face to this pitiful falcons organization:142smilie

i don't necessarily agree with you on this....i think parcells is a better coach than talent evaluator. when he was the gm of the jets, alot of his draft picks didn't do so well.

if i was blank, i would talk to ron wolf, the guy who turned around the packers & traded for favre. he has a better history as a personnel guy than parcells.

i dont think parcells was the main man (he didn't have final say) involved in the dallas draft process...while he was as a jet...

don't get me wrong..parcells knows football talent..but i believe his strength is in coaching & not in player evalutaion.and i think there are other football people who could do as good a job or even better as parcells as a front office person.

Obviously if parcells would have been brought in he would have replaced McKay. Your point is that parcells is not all that. My point is regardless what you think of him he is still much better than the stiff they have now!!

i'm a long time giant fan & a big fan of parcells the coach...but i don't think he's anything special as a front office person...& according to what i read parcells was going to replace mckay as the talent evaluator & mckay was going to handle the business aspects of the franchise....

parcells will change the attitude in the miami organization & that is one of the things that the falcons need....badly.

what do you falcon fans think about this ?

what do you falcon fans think about this ?

Report: Falcons interested in Schottenheimer

After losing out on Bill Parcells and Bill Cowher, the Falcons may have their next target.

The Falcons are interested in former San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Citing league sources, the paper said the Falcons are also inquiring about Chargers assistant GM Buddy Nix in a general-manager role.

The Chargers fired Schottenheimer after a 14-2 regular season a year ago, one that included a home loss to New England in the second round of the playoffs.

San Diego GM A.J. Smith talked to the Union-Tribune about the speculation, saying, "I have not heard about Buddy Nix, but I have heard the Coach Schottenheimer rumors.

"If true, I believe a Buddy Nix-Marty Schottenheimer team in Atlanta would be a perfect fit. ... Buddy got along well with Coach Schottenheimer. They socialized together, went out to dinner, golfed together, sat together on the plane, talked football all the time."

Atlanta is still looking for a permanent coach after former head coach Bobby Petrino left the team after 13 games to accept the head job with the University of Arkansas.

Schottenheimer sucks.

The Falcons dont need another has been like
Dan Reeves.

They need to hire a good evaluator of talent, a strong GM , and let them hire a up and coming coach .

I like the offensive co of Dallas.

He'll never come to Atlanta. Jones will offer him megabucks to stay in Dallas.

Dallas has seen this happen with New Orleans coach, won't let it happen again.

kneifl

if garrett goes anyplace i think he will go to miami...but i read that jones is thinking of offering garrett the head coaching job next year no matter what....in fear of losing him...
