Study: False statements preceded war By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer

A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The study concluded that the statements "were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses."

The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration's position that the world community viewed Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, as a threat.

"The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said.

The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

"It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida," according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. "In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003."

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida, the study found. That was second only to Powell's 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qaida.

The center said the study was based on a database created with public statements over the two years beginning on Sept. 11, 2001, and information from more than 25 government reports, books, articles, speeches and interviews.

"The cumulative effect of these false statements ? amplified by thousands of news stories and broadcasts ? was massive, with the media coverage creating an almost impenetrable din for several critical months in the run-up to war," the study concluded.

"Some journalists ? indeed, even some entire news organizations ? have since acknowledged that their coverage during those prewar months was far too deferential and uncritical. These mea culpas notwithstanding, much of the wall-to-wall media coverage provided additional, 'independent' validation of the Bush administration's false statements about Iraq," it said.

Stevie......you're still acting like a member of the 'reality based community'

The source of the term is a quotation in an October 17, 2004, New York Times Magazine article by writer Ron Suskind, quoting an unnamed aide to George W. Bush:

The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." ... "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality?judiciously, as you will?we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors?and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."[1]

Bold face portion was a quote from Wikipedia. Seems more obvious what was meant all the time, huh? :SIB

"the bunker"
the wicked bush & cheney used their time machine to go back and ramp up the false intel during the 1990's....

other liars of note:

"The debate over Iraq is not about politics. It is about national security. It should be clear that our national security requires Congress to send a clear message to Iraq and the world: America is united in its determination to eliminate forever the threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction."
-- John Edwards, October 10, 2002

"Iraq does pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf and we should organize an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power."
-- Al Gore, October 2002

Members of reality--surely you jest-

1st the source of info- Center for Public Integrity
Sounds unbiased doesn't it--
but in reality who runs this outfit--
"In December of 2004, the Center's board of directors choose a successor, television journalist Roberta Baskin. Baskin came to the Center after directing consumer investigations for ABC News's 20/20 and serving as Washington correspondent for PBS's NOW with Bill Moyers[11].

Report Bush lied
a lie by definition is-
To present false information with the intention of deceiving.
To have remotely been quilty of lying he would have had to have known there were no WMD's
All estimations were based on reports-and facts that he did have and use them and refused to verify he didn't--the vote was 77-23 to go to war.
in reality everyone on both sides interpreted info available and came to same "opinion" not lie.

Without taking up several pages -lets just look at last dem pres-last dem Pres candidate and probable future dem candidate--

The FACTS
BillyBob--
""One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." ("US: Clinton Says Diplomatic Solution Preferable In Iraq," AAP Newsfeed, 2/5/98)

Kerry-
Sen. John Kerry (D-MA): "[W]ithout question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real." (Sen. John Kerry, Remarks At Georgetown University, Washington, DC, 1/23/03)

Hilliary-
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al-Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." (Sen. Hillary Clinton, Congressional Record, 10/10/02, p. S10288)

ok we'll throw in Pelosi too-
"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process. The responsibility of the United States in this conflict is to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, to minimize the danger to our troops and to diminish the suffering of the Iraqi people." (Rep. Nancy Pelosi, "Statement On U.S. Led Military Strike Against Iraq," Press Release, 12/16/98)

So in Reality--why haven't we seen these left wing media outlets with headlines about those in their party that came to same conclusion on WMD's if their reporting were unbiased

In Reality you/they rant on GW--yet voted for those in your own party with same consensous-

Any light come on yet?
Prob not--tough to convey reality to those that--

-- equate opinion of majortiy based on available evidence as a lie--excluding those of their party-

--while at same time the define a finger waving, under oath blatant lie, by all definitions--
-as a BJ
;)

Assuming Bush was an honest man a no vote would have severly limited his chance to negotiate any kind of a settlement with Iraq. If a Senator, stupidly enough, thought that Bush was being straight with us, had no choice other to vote yes. I don't know what it is that guys like DTB don't get. A yes vote was to be used as a last resorce, not a first.

Boys:

I've said this before, the democrats, the media, the country in general did not demand enough from the administration. They were too easily led down the primrose path. Everybody wanted revenge for 9-11, no matter who the hell was responsible. As long as they were brown with a thick mustache.

Democrats were wussies and afraid to be called unpatriotic and lose elections. Media the same way (more responsible actually cause they are suppose to be more critical). But who really made it impossible.

The administration set the tone by making it impossible to challenge their position without being called "unamerican" or "unpatriotic". The administration was in a rush to war. They and they alone made it imposible to legitimately look into there stance prior to the war.

They did not welcome debate. Either you are with us or your against us. If you challenged them on anything it was political suicide. Who created and fostered that atmosphere? Bush/Cheney et al.

That is there crime. They made it imposible to challenge them. Everyone here knows that. Now that they have been exposed, Wayne, your argument is rather wimpish that "well, duh, they all had the same intelligence."

Can you imagine, back in the late fall of 2002 someone standing up and saying lets not invade Iraq until we have more info. Like Hans Blik did? Whatever happened to that guy anyway? Its funny, I remember him getting crucified on these boards and it turns out he was totally correct. Hundreds of thousands of dead people later.
