Seems like everyone's looking for a tip when you want something to eat. So here's the question, tip ( % ) or no tip.

1) Food counter person at a convience store.
Me, no tip :nono:

2) Pick-up counter at a Pizza Shop
Me, no tip :nono:

3) Roadside take-out stand
Me, no tip :nono:

4) Apple Bee's Curbside Pick-Up
This one baffle's me, 10%

5) Buffet's
Me, 15%

I agree on all of them except Applebee's ... no idea about that one but lean toward no tip.

What about large appliance or furniture delivery guys (assuming all they do is drop off the stuff in boxes)?

Why tip 15% on a buffet? What the hell is wrong with you????

Give a buck a person at the table for the person who busses the table. No one is bringing you any food.....YOU are getting it!

interesting topic....

no tip for me also

2) Pick-up counter at a Pizza Shop
no tip...same

3) Roadside take-out stand
no tip..same

4) Apple Bee's Curbside Pick-Up
don't use them

5) Buffet's
15%....i'll tip 10-15% depending what the waiters bring to the table..

6)Haircut or Beardtrim...
the guy i use (owns the place) charges me $6 to trim my beard..so i give him $10 & tell him to keep the change...haircut costs me $12..so i usually give him $20 & tell him to keep the change...

It's a "one time" swing by........Screw 'em.

We have a Chinese joint in town. $11.99 for supper buffet. Take 5 people there, and I'm giving one of these clowns $10 for bringing us 5 sodas and taking away some dishes? :142smilie

I agree with the reasoning behind this. It's a flat rate for me. The cost of the buffet doesn't change the quality of the lower-level person bringing me my Diet Coke.

$1-2 bucks per person sounds right
But I'm just talking Vegas/Reno buffet's, don't have any non-Nevada experience with them.

As for picking up from restaurants (Thai, Chinese, Pizza, whatever) I will tip 5-10% if I like the place, or the host, or am a regular, but don't feel bad if I keep the change.

One of the deciding factors in tipping a pickup/takeout order, for me, is if you are distracting the waiter, who lives on tips, from their tables, then I tip a bit. But if it is just the owner, or host, then I don't feel as compelled.

I'm no big tipper but am pretty generous at our chinese buffet--give $5 for bill on myself and wife which generally comes to little less than $20.
--but get exceptional service as know most personel.
Besides the water they always keep crab discards to minimum--stopping by a couple of times--they know i like frog legs and will bring me big plate from kitchen--know how I like my steak and always bring it made perfect without asking.
--and when I run low on shrimp at home can buy box of frozen shrimp from them at little over $3 a lb before I leave--I'm happy-they are happy-alls well that ends well.:)

Not food related, but

6) Haircut
me, no tip:nono:

as bad as it sounds, I am a stickler on haircuts. No tip is standard for me.

If they do a good job they get an extra couple bucks - i.e, they talk to me during the haircut, they smile, they do the trimming well around the ear, eyebrows etc.

If they rub their boobies on me while doing the cutting.. extra money for them.

For you guys in DC/VA area. Go hit the "Men's Grooming Lounge"
A-1 place for haircut.
I make a reservation there everytime I shoot out to DC.
Those gals usually pick up an extra 20 spot from me for a tip.

I mostly agreed with Al here. I was a bartender in college, so I try to tip something to most people. Most in this line of work are students, elderly supplementing ssi, or working single moms. They aren't getting rich, just trying to scrape out a living.

1, food counter-if this person is making your meal (breakfast, lunch), and serving it to me. Presumably pouring coffee, or drink. I would definitely tip something, even if only 1 or 2 bucks. You would tip your bartender night? And often he is only opening or pouring a beer.

2. Pizza or sub takeout. If it's the owner, generally not. Again, if it's a student, or single mom, generally tip something, even if it's a buck, or just the change. Local places you frequent often, you get to know the people. If their good people, I try to tip them. For instance young female neighbor or mine opens Duncan doughnuts at 4 a.m., goes home & sleeps, goes to subway & works 4-9 p.m. saving for college. In all consciousness, can't not tip someone like that.

3 road side-same thoughts, if owner probably not.

4. Curb side-if it is a drive through, grabbing your food from the window, probably not. If someone is walking the order out to my car, probably tip something. Remember, most waitress type jobs are making under minimum wage, because tips are considered a major percentage of their wages.

5. Buffet. Definitely tip something, these are generally bus boys that make nothing. if they are bringing drinks, filling water & tea (Chinese restaurant) without having to ask repeatedly. They usually are always clearing used plates & glasses Also.

6. I have never heard of someone not giving a tip to whoever cuts your hair. Man that's asking to be scalped:scared

I guess as a rule, I usually tip someone who is trying to perform their job well, and make your experience or visit a positive one. If someone acts like they don't give a shit, gives no effort, screws up order, makes me continually ask them for service etc. etc. would tip much less or nothing. Guess what I'm trying to say is, I would tip more regarding the persons effort & attitude, than what or where they worked, if that makes sense.

Interesting discussion.

I always take it on a situational basis. But I am pretty sure I read somewhere like GQ you should ALWAYS tip your barber, unless you were so displeased you don,t plan on coming back. Personally I go to the same place and see the same guys so I would feel like a cheap skate not tipping. Also I have noticed when I have more money I tip more, especially when I actually win money from the book! :00hour Share the wealth lol
