I am wondering if you guys have ever been to this area. thinking about going down on a golf trip in August. Is there much going on down there? Bars? Riverboats?

My dad and I used to go horse back riding in that area when I was young.

Does that help? :00hour

Live about 90 miles from there, son goes to college close by. If golf is what your after it's ok. No riverboats or gambling anywhere close. Caters more to the blue hair crowd. Very family friendly, matter of fact don't think there is even a strip club in Branson, some close by.

Personally, I wouldn't make that a destination if you were looking to party much - unless it's changed dramatically in the past couple of years. I grew up in Springfield, and knew Branson before it was Branson. Our family used to go there to a small resort to get away from everything. Certainly very different now.

Very country/hillbilly culture area (not backwards or dirty, they just cultivate the image for tourism) - although they have stepped it up and there are some nice places now. I hear the landing area down by Lake Taneycomo is really nice, and there are a couple of great golf courses down there now. My buddy has been bugging me to come down and play one of them.

But, depends on who you are going with, and why. If it's mainly for golf and some sensible fun, it would be ok. But for bars, nightlife, gambling, and anything not family oriented, I would pass on it.

Loungelizard, does your son attend MSU? Or one of the other colleges in Springfield? MSU is my alma mater - when it was Southwest Missouri State - remember when they almost beat Kansas and Danny Manning in the NCAA tourney? I won a ton of money on that game! :00hour

I still call them SMS out of habit. Both of my older brothers are alums and I use to like going down there to visit and see some good b-ball games.

Beautiful place, a lot of people moving there, very soon it will not be just a travel destination... lots of baby boomers will be retiring there. I'm building some houses up there on some of the private golf courses. According to one of the builders I know out there the city is looking into getting gambling licenses and also an international airport is in the works. So definitely Branson is not what it used to be and will be very up and coming. Great place to just "get away from it all". Bring your golf clubs, water gear, and Enjoy!

The Rockaway Beach proposal was voted down in 2004. I agree with Chadman that Branson perpetuates the hillbilly lore for the sake of tourism, plus the area is definitely in the starting lineup of bible belt towns. The old money, CofC, city council in Branson will never allow gambling there period.

I would recommend moving the golf outing to Tunica, RTJ trail or Lake of the Ozarks unless you like roller coasters and funnel cakes.
