Thinking of going there for our anniversary...

Want to be in an area with gambling, but not too far from being able to snorkel, head to the beach etc.....

Any suggestions?

Above the Clouds....
Mexico doesn't have casinos but I would take that over Belieze. I'm headed to Playacar on Sunday. Have been 6 or 7 times and we love it.

Thank you - that link was very helpful - I had forgotten about it.

The Heartland
Went to Ambergris Caye (island off of Belize) about 10 years ago and loved it. Of course I'm not as picky and stuck up as some people out there. Can't remember the place we stayed at but there were not many to choose from at the time. There was no AC in the condo and the town didn't have any paved streets, but had some good restaurants. There wasn't any beach as it was all rocks and you had to walk out across the pier to get into the water. It was pretty much a place to dive and snorkel. I have been to many places in Mexico, Caymans, Turks and Caicos, St. Lucia, and the Virgin Islands and the diving doesn't get any better than this place. The reef hasn't been destroyed by the tourists and so there is a much broader range of marine life to see. After looking on the internet of the area it has drastically changed. It looks like there are many more places to stay at and they have some man made beaches. I loved the trip but it might not be for everyone.

Totally agree. had a great time both times I've been to Belize. First trip was Christmastime 2004, the second in late Jan, 2007.
Stayed in Belize City the first time(one night) and took the speedboats out to the Cayes(pronounced Keys) for the snorkeling and scuba diving. Fantastic diving--the coral reef off the coast of Belize is the 2nd largest in the world.
2nd visit we stayed on Caye Caulker and that was cooler than Belize City, which is a dump and not safe to be on the streets after dark.
Had great food and plenty of cold beer both times we were there; lodging is expensive but everything else is cheap; cheap; cheap.
I HATE the all-inclusive places in Mexico; I'd rather rough it a bit and choose where, when and what I'm going to eat while on vacation.
I hear the resorts up near the Mexican border are built more for the average American's tastes--I.E.--all inclusive, sandy beaches, no sign of the natives anywhere, etc etc.
Not my scene, but if thats what your into I'd stay away from Belize.

There is a casino in Belize City-but no beaches at all in the city. You have to go out to Caye Caulker to find a sandy beach.
