Ok,

so I'm going to paint my kids rooms. Figure I would drop in at the local Home Depot, and pick up some paint and brushes, no problem

I get there and holy chit, there must be 25 different paint brushes, from bristle to sponge brushes, to rollers of all sizes, corner angles, trim angles, the list goes on.

I ask the one of the workers about rollers and he asked me what size 'nap' I wanted...

I was gonna tell him I don't swing that way, but he explained it was teh thickness of the material on the roller, OH!!:00x24 :00x24

I asked about paint, stupid me,.....

We have gloss, semi-gloss, enamel, latex, eggshell, flat, and I don't know how many others he said..

"Sir, since you are painting one of the rooms blue, do you need tinted primer?!". WTF, I don't know!!!!

Just give me some fawking paint to paint my kids room with...

So, I said to hell with it and figured I would get some 'advice' from MJer's before dropping $25.00/gallon

I'm figuring the bristle brushes are better than sponge brushes, because of the price!! , but that had ALL types and ALL price ranges

The lady at the paint counters said an 'eggshell' paint would be good, since I have kids and cleans easier, and is between flat and glossy....any thoughts....

I figured a couple of coats of regular white primer should do o.k....

Rooms aren't that big...

Thanks

Lawrence

Flat is much better for most rooms with kids.

How old are your kids? You could make it an art project if they are the creative type.

Here
Behr is very good paint it's worth the money.
Don't get flat with kids you can't clean it eggshell is easier to clean.
Just get the cheaper bristle brush.

Eggshell....use Benjamin-Moore paint (worth the extra $$)....one coat of Zinnser primer will cover almost anything (water stains, etc....) get a 2 1/2 to 3 inch brush (about $10) and a roller with 3/8" nap (or pile) for semi smooth surfaces and you should do fine. (Been doing some painting myself lately), good luck.

thanks for the info.

will go with the eggshell, and a bristle brush with a 3/8 nap/pile :mj07: since I'm painting sheetrock

I priced the BEHR and it was $23.80/gallon, and BEHR primer was $17.50/gallon.

2 gallons of primer and couple gallons of each color should do fine!!

I apologize I wrote flat and meant eggshell. Not sure why that is.

I still think letting the kids go wild will pay off.

Look at it this way. Since you are inexperienced, you might as well be able to blame it on them.

Don't be concerned if the primer doesn't have a neat, uniform appearance. You simply want it to cover the surface you are treating.

Your finish coat should have the uniform appearance.

Man oh man...........add up all the $$$ you'll drop on paint, brushes, rollers etc, then add in all the time it will take. I'm willing to bet for all that it would be cheaper to hire someone???

:iagree:

You also need to consider you will have to "cut in" the perimeter of the ceiling (hard to keep the line strait if you are inexperienced, especially if you have popcorn type ceiling), then you wil have to tape off the baseboard-moldings, etc...I would look for a local retired guy that does "handyman" work on the side. Probably get it done for a C Note in labor, plus paint cost. Handyman will have all the necessary supplies to get 'er done.

went back to home depot and found a couple of gadgets,

one is like a tape dispenser with two rollers and you roll along baseboards, door frame, etc and the tape sticks right down.

did the whole room in 10 minutes :scared :scared

then for the ceiling, this gadget with a pad on one side a two little wheels that role against the ceiling and makes perfectly straight line.

pretty easy, even for a novice.

finished priming and got one coat on my son's wall, will finish second coat tomorrow.

overall, hasn't been a bad experience...althought I'm easily up to $300.00 spent

$300 sounds a bit high.
Home Depot sells a nice 3/8 nap roller covers, 6 pak for 5.99, I think. A professional roller handle will last much much longer and is much easier to use. The same with a pro extension. It will literally last forever.
Behr is top of the line, probably not needed for the kid's room. But Depot's Glidden semi -gloss for doors and either semi-gloss or flat for the walls is a cheaper very excellent choice, is completely washable and keeps it's color nicely for easy touch ups whenever.
The little roller pad with wheels is a cheap must have.
You could have skipped the primer, actually.
The only other piece of advice is to save some paint for later touch up. If you have over a half can left, try to save it in that can. But, clean the top rim of the can & the cover also, so it will seal tight. If you've damaged the top or cover or can't clean it, save the paint in an old jar with a screw top. Preferably not plastic as plastic breathes and lets air in over time. Glass mayo jar is great. Put a touch of vaseline around the grooves for easy opening later.
In any respect, save the paint numbers for later reference/use.
Painting is easy.....GL
*They also sell a brush, a 3" pure bristle( clear unfinished wood handle) from Indonesia for $1.50 or $2. It will last for 6-7 paint jobs and is just great for trim work. One of the finest values in the store........I have been using this brand for like 15-20 years. I even buy2-3 at a time just in casethey will not sell them anymore, I like it so much.
