WASHINGTON - Ralph Nader is launching a third-party campaign for president. The consumer advocate made the announcement Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." He says most Americans are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties, and that none of the presidential contenders are addressing ways to stem corporate crime and Pentagon waste and promote labor rights.

why wait so late to get in? I really don't see him doing anything but taking Republican votes. I'm sure the Democrats are rejoicing.

not too sure they be that happy Clint--as they think he stole election from them with Gore--will take a bit to decipher who will benefit most from this move--initial thoughts- its giving alternate selection to those pissed at McCain--while big portion Omama base couldn't be swayed regardless who ran--but nothing new.

The key will be how it effects independents--and going to have to study on that.

The pisser is- all time spent previously crunching #'s for future state by state wagers to come was in naught and will have to start from scratch :(

I see him taking more Dem votes than Reps; why would anyone contemplating voting for McCain vote for an extreme liberal like Nader...?

I agree Reds. This is not good for the dems. I think Nader has alot of good ideas, but obviously has no chance of winning. Is Ralph a misguided idealist or attention whore?

In my opinion, Jabbs, he is both. If he can get on enough ballots in the right states again, we can look for at least 4 more years of a Republican presidency. I'd better get a bet down on the Rep party winning in Nov. before the odds get too crazy...

might as well make a buck off it. I understand his position that there is no real difference between the dems and the repubs, but I have to disagree. I think a 3rd party would be great for America, but it would require a powerful demagogue, and Ralph clearly is not.

These don't appear to be Republican talking points, so it will hurt the Dems, but I'm not sure how many people will really want to vote for a third party candidate in the bubble states.

inclined to agree at 1st on my initial thoughts Bobby--but with polarizing figures on both parties will have to rehash it--

I am quite certain it will certainly make CA in play for GOP for 1st time in ages--

just a side note on CA, I think that Arnold has proved to be a good governor. The same can be said for our governor, Charlie Christ (also a Republican). He really has been great for our state.

Is there a person like that in America right now, Jabbs?

I can't think of one...

You got that right, Dogs. And Florida could be close again, opening up that whole can of worms as to where all those electoral college votes go.

Any questions as to why I think the Electoral College needs to go away? :D

I see both sides of the electoral college conundrum and can't seem to land on one side or the other.

On another aside Reds, I was born on the campus of the Iowa Hawkeyes. My dad was finishing his doctorate there at the time (when Vonnegut was there, one of all time favs). Iowa City is where I came into the world.

One of my favorites, too.

Vonnegut taught at the writers' workshop from 1965 to 1967. In two years he overcame struggles to finish his most famous book, "Slaughterhouse Five.

So we are about the same age, Jabbs. I was born in Las Vegas in 1964...:D

I loved my time in Iowa City...earned a BS and MS in political science from the U of I, then stayed for work until '98 when we moved here to Davenport, which is where I grew up.

You need to come "home" for a football game sometime...

a little more about Vonnegut's time in IC from the obit that ran after his passing....

In 2002, Vonnegut donated a portrait of one of his famous characters, Kilgore Trout. He wrote a message which explains his thoughts on Iowa City: ?Dear (then director of the writers? workshop) Frank Conroy, maybe you can find space in the workshop to hang this, as my acknowledgment of my spiritual debt to Iowa City, which was the major epiphany of my entire existence."

Friends remember Vonnegut?s sense of humor and how it came out in his writing. Critics will remember Vonnegut as the voice of the Vietnam generation.

Leggett said, ?He caught the attention and love and enthusiasm of the young people."

I would love that Reds. I am putting that on my list for next fall.
