I have a combo DVD/VCR, the VCR is broke and I need to record some stuff off my DVR. I am looking for thoughts and opinions on buying a DVD recorder. Should I buy another combo unit w/ DVD recorder & VCR or just buy the DVD recorder by itself, cheaper. Any makes and models better than others? I have heard about copyright issues with some units....

i`ve had a good experience with panasonic.....i have 2 dvd/vcr recorders.....one is the hi-def upconvert....

the only issue is that the hi-def records in a format that shows the picture a little compressed.....

i have it hooked to a 52 inch t.v.,so it`s not a big deal...they picture off the tuner is very good....not quite as tight as the t.v`.s hi def picture, but very good....

they`re phasing dvd out in favor of blue ray, but, the blue rays i`ve seen advertized, for the most part, play dvds and many actually upconvert them(unless i`m reading the ads wrong).....

that was good news for me....

panasonic`s solid...and the upconvert dvd recorder seldom,if ever, gets blocked by copyright edits(i originally bought a sony and returned it when all the ppv fights and premium channel movies were blocked by copyright infringement safeguards)....
