From a fan's perspective (not a gambling one), what is the greatest sport?
I grew up in KY where basketball was king and there really wasn't any competitors to the throne. When I moved to GA for college, my eyes were opened to wonderful world of college (and subsequently NFL) football. Ever since then, I find it hard to watch a basketball game that does not have either KY or UGA in it. (this changed with this year's Memphis team -- they were fun).
During this whole time, soccer probably would have been my favorite sport if it had more exposure here. But it's quite difficult to be a rabid soccer fan in KY/GA/TN. So that's out for me, unfortunately.
This season I have had the opportunity to go to about 10-12 Predators games, and DAMN is that a great sport! I think I posted briefly about this last year after attending 1-2 games, but this season has been incredible! The one thing I don't like about hockey (and I don't think it will cross the hump until it changes) is the fighting. That being said, I have seen exactly 1 fight over the course of all the games this year. (Yeah, we Nashville boys are wussies!)
Last night, the Red Wings management occupied the two boxes to the right of us. Amazing! All of them looked Russian and they showed no emotion with eyes forward and no talking. This probably would have been quite different if the game was going well for them, but it was cool watching how they observed the game. I shook hands with GM Holland between periods as we were both leaving the boxes at the same time. He was SWARMED by red Wings fans for autographs right as I walked off.
The one thing that hockey has over football is the more intimate environment. It's absolutely explosive when things are going well. Football gets rowdy but the enclosed environment packed around the smaller playing field has an effect.
The main positive over basketball is the pace. It's like watching the '08 Memphis Tigers vs. the '91 UNLV Runnin' Rebs.... that get to rotate players freely and the bench consists of the '93 Michigan Wolverines and the '83 Houston Cougars, respectively.
Baseball is nostalgic. But outside of that, it has never appealed to my senses. Couple it with the string of bad news lately, and we come to today where I actually had to go back and add it to the title of the thread.
Your thoughts?
