Try www.vrbo.com for vacation rentals by owner. My wife and I rented a 3-2 house in Destin last year for about $1500 which by far was cheaper than any condos we could find.

Destin/Panama City Beach are so much better than Gulf Shores. Just my preference. Beach and water are much better.

vrbo is nice, but since I don't know chit about Panama City Beach, it's tough to navigate.

Here's what I need. Condo on the beach. Pool. Enough room for my 4 member family; need a private bedroom, and kids can sleep on a rollaway, floor, cot, or whatever as long as they are in a different room. :142smilie

Is a 1 BR going to be good enough?? They say sleep 6; what does that really mean? :mj07: I'd like some private time with the Mrs. :SIB

There are about 200 different condo places. I need some great places and places to avoid. Thanks for any knowledge.

Well, hell.............I tried. Let me know if you change your mind. There is no back bumper on it and the rooms are kind of small but hey, it beats camping right?!?!?!?!

Clint I go about 3-5 times a year and would be happy to help you anyway I can. To be perfectly honest we go to fish so I do not get into the tourist spots that much and it has changed quite a bit since I went just for vacation. A couple of odds and ins for you: PCB has tried very hard over the last 5 years to change its teenage party culture to a more family oriented one. Many older cheap motels have been torn down and replaced with the high rise multi activity style condos. If you want to stay in the middle of the action then Thomas drive or the eastern part of Front Beach rd is for you. if you want a little less pricey and less crowded then the western part of PCB is more for you. If you did want to go to the pier it is being rebuilt and will not be ready by this summer. St. Andrews state park at the eastern most end Thomas Drive is a nice place. If you plan on cooking seafood Cardenas Seafood Market can not be beat. Many people will recommend Capt. Andersons or the Tresure Ship to dine, if you go please order the She-Crab soup and thank me later. Not sure exactly what you are looking for but would be happy to answer anything else if I can. I will be down at least twice this summer at some point if it works out I am sure we will have room for another on the boat. GL, Jeff

the fishing sounds awesome. Keep in touch with me on that; would love to go.

I guess what I'm looking for is family oriented, but certainly not bells and whistles. I want to be on the beach. I don't have to be in a new condo, but don't want shabby either. Thanks for the info.

Six Five, a lot of condos have bunks built into their hallways and a lot of condos have sleeper sofas. If you've been visiting VRBO it will tell you what kind of sleeping arrangements they have for each condo. My family and I love Destin which is about 40 miles west of PCB. Not as crowded as PCB and nicer IMO. We are going there first week of August and found a penthouse condo for about $1,100.Good luck and if you find a condo you like look at their calendar and if they have a lot of openings you may be able to get a better deal. Of course you are going in July, peak season. Any other questions let me know.

If you want a more family oriented time, I would definitely go to Destin. Many things to do for kids and the beach is the best. Really big putlet mall, great shoppimg, sensational golf. If you want more peace, slow times, and quiet, then anywhee east of San Destin like Seaside, Grayton Beach work great. If you want a little more activity, then I would stay on old 98 or 2378 which is the same road will be great. Nice restauants nearby, golf, etc. In Destin by the bridge, there is a marina where they do chartered fishing. Definitely more of an older family oriented time than Panama City, and much nicer.

Clint July is most expensive month for rentals in Destin--never could figure that out because of heat. If you decide on Destin -you can rent cheaper from outside source than resort property.
Would check out prices with Ocean Reef-they managed ours and prices were bout 20% less than if you went through resort.

--however would opt for Panama for bang for buck--much less than Destin and no difference beach wise--however not gated but if not during spring break should be no prob. Should be able to find accomadations there a modest price.
