Just had blood work come back from doctor. I don't really understand. The doctor says that he has a goal for less than 160 for LDL (bad) and above 40 for HDL (good).

My readings are:

LDL = 136
HDL = 44

The problem is that my overall cholesterol score is 202.

How does this work? What does this mean?

might help you out..

There are three ways to evaluate cholesterol score, which are often used in concert with each other. Measurements typically taken to determine cholesterol score include total cholesterol, and individual cholesterol measurements for high-density lipoproteins or HDL and low-density lipoproteins or LDL. When these measurements are read together, the doctor has the best way of determining your cholesterol score and cholesterol health. Testing may also include an evaluation of triglyceride level.

When evaluating total cholesterol level, the desired cholesterol score should be less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). A score between 200-239 mg/dL is considered borderline high and a score of 240 mg/dL or above is high. Many physicians suggest patients try to aim for a cholesterol level of about 150-180 mg/dL, by modifying diet and pursuing exercise. When this can be accomplished, the total cholesterol score is considered safe and nowhere near borderline high.

LDL measurements tend to measure the ?bad? cholesterol that is most likely to lead to disease. So in this case you are looking for a low number. A good cholesterol score of LDL is between 100-129 mg/dL. A score under 100 mg/dL is considered optimal. An LDL cholesterol score of 130-159 mg/dL is borderline high, 160-189 mg/dL is high and 190 mg/dL is very high. With the LDL measurement and the total cholesterol measurement, you want to see these numbers lower, instead of high.

In contrast, HDL cholesterol score is better when the number is higher. This is the ?good cholesterol? our body needs ? it keeps total cholesterol and LDL numbers down. A good cholesterol score for HDL is 60 mg/dL or better. 40 mg/dL or lower is considered a risk factor for developing heart disease.

Doctors may measure triglyceride levels when blood cholesterol score is computed. Generally a good score for triglycerides is less than 150 mg/dL. Physicians also look at the whole health picture when measuring cholesterol. For example, a person with a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease is more at risk from levels approaching borderline. People with poor diet, extra weight, and who don?t pursue an active lifestyle also run greater risk of heart disease from a high cholesterol score.

Thanks, IE.

To add, my triglyceride score was 110. I guess 1 out of 4 ain't bad. Where's my bacon?

Your total cholestral is based on your LDL plus HDL plus 1/5 of triglycerides . Never look at the total because if your HDL is high you will get a high total number but that is good.
If you have known heart disease your goal for your LDL is 70 and a minimum HDL 40. The higher the HDL the better.
If you have risk factors for heart disease like high blood pressure, diabetes or a strong family history of heart disease your goal LDL is less than 100 with same HDL goals.
If you have NO risk factors for heart disease your target LDL is less than 130. If you are at 136 and have no risk factors you can probably get your LDL to less than 130 with diet and exercise.

the one u want to work on is the HDL. Yours is borderline low. Mine was very low last year. I raised it 20 points by just exercising. They can give u a drug called niacin or Niaspan that will raise it, but cardiovascular exercise is the best way to raise it.

There are heriditary factors involved in your readings; some people are doomed by their genes in this area. Your numbers are manageable. Your triglycerides are excellent (especially for a beer drinker!).

SixFive,

Are Tryglicerides directly related to beer, or any and all alcohol? Also, why is the HDL more important than the LDL?....

Franky

When I think tryglicerides, I think carbohydrates and sugars. When they are high, they get better if u cut down on sugars and empty KCalories. People with low HDLs are at more risk for heart disease.

Try eating "Cardiotabs". Created by a cardiologist to help reduce your chol. numbers and bring the good ones up. Used them for the last 120 days, that and chol. meds my general Dr. put me on. Went from a 230 down to a 187.:0corn

u must b 1 of those people with the heriditary predisposition for high numbers. Glad they are much improved now.

My wife is one of those people. Doing everything right now to try to straighten it out.
Strictly chicken and fish and salad.

Doc said the next step is blood washing!:scared

Any suggestions?
