June's MensHealth Mag had a good article on fasting....the guy has been doing a 36 hour fast every week for 60 weeks.......

some tidbits from it

Four Rules of Fasting

1. Don't Fast unless you're in good shape and eat right already- people who are severely overweight or don't eat a generally healthful diet could see blood-pressure drops, low nutrient levels or other problems.....

2. Start off easy- A few 24-hour fasts will help your body and mind adjust. Two nights without food can be a long time for novices.

3. Bookend the fast with the right meals- If you eat carbohydrate laden large meal before you fast, it will make you hungrier the next day. Similarly, a small meal with protein at the end of the fast will prevent you from feeling overstuffed

4. Pace yourself- You want the hardest part-the end of the fast-to hit while youre sleepping so your brain is sharp during the waking period of the fast. If starting with a 24-hour fast, go from breakfast to breakfast, not dinner to dinner.

How much lemon water did you consume daily?

at the time lemon water was my drink of choice..

easily over 2 gallons a day..

no sodas..no caffene..

drank beer back then but in moderation..

it was many years later that alcohol nearly killed me

My wife did a 10 day fast a couple of months ago - she consumed a concoction made of water, lemon, honey and cayenne pepper and that was all she had the entire time

She enjoyed it and without all of the bs in her system her mind was very clear and she was excercising, etc the entire time - been thinking about trying to pull it off - instructions are in a book called "The Master Cleanse" I think, and she thinks she will do it yearly during Lent

How fasting improves your health

Mitochondria inside your body's cells use carbohydrates to make cell fuel. The molecular by-product: free radicals that damages DNA, impair cellular function, and promote cancer. Heres how fasting may help

1. Fewer Free Radicals- During a fast the mitochondria, sensing a lack of food, become more efficient. Like a cleaner-burning fire, they start producing fewer free radicals per calorie burned....

2. More antioxidants- The diminishing number of free radicals is met by an increase in antioxidant production within your cells. These enzymes "search and destroy free radicals."

3. Stronger cells- This cleaner calorie-burning also produces a surge in beneficial stress hormones, such as cortisol and growth hormone. "Exercise during a fast and the increase is even greater," says Eric Ravussin, Ph.D. adding that the hormones prepare cells for worse stresses. "They'll better resist tumors and rebound faster from a heart attack."

OLD SCHOOL...please post more, I would like to know how much and of what you had and were doing, as I have toyed with this idea for awhile but never had a nutritionist to give me advise, not that you are, but sounds like you had success with your style of doing so. Could you give as much details as possible as I would like to go through the regiment and start including this in my quest to cleanse the system and body, and these infommercials that use a substance to make you SHAT pieces of a rubber hose 3 ft long I am not sure about the safety involved with those, thanks in advance and hopefully you enlighten all of us that are interested!!!!!

I got into a serious routine of healthy foods and drink after an out of body experience.
That lead me the Cayce Foundation to learn about Theology and Yoga and other religions.

Running 10 miles in the morning and in the evening combined w/ a weight lifting routine was taking my body and mind to places I had never been. Runners utopia and energy beyond my wildest dreams..But I wanted to take it further so I began fasting to free all the toxins from my body and by brain.

I started out by eating like a pig the night before I began the one day fast..Then telling myself that I could go a complete 24 hours with nothing but water..wasn't easy that first fast but at the time I was very strong willed and thus began the journey..

Research and talking to other Cayce Foundation members lead me to using lemon water to speed up the toxin release not only from the intestines but also speeded up the brain cleaning..

As time went on I learned to eat moderately before a fast because the cravings for food are actually less that way ..

Breaking the fast w/ruffage[lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, and others like] [experiment you will like some better than others.] helps to break down and scrub the loose junk that the lemon water and natural process your body uses has dislodged. The ruffage also lets your digestive tract and stomach take a slow gear back to breaking down solid food and then releasing it.

As time goes on and the fasting becomes a normal routine you will want to sleep through the last of the fast..The energy and quick mind you will begin to experience is unreal as first..

Your choices in food will change and hard to digest foods will have no appeal to you.

Fruit and veggies will become a meal and a snack and an in-between delight..Your body and mind crave them because they know the good they do.Fish along chicken and other easily digested meats become a big favorite for those who learn to clense their body w/ a regular routine.

I will tell ya about moving on to meditation and 2 and 3 day fast tomorrow..

hope this isn't boring..only way I can relate it is to tell of the experience as I lived it

Besides it is a hell of alot more interesting than my depths in hell later w/alcohol abuse..

ain't life grand:mj07:

no spel:scared l check..probably reads like a 5th grader..

I am seriously thinking about doing this....maybe Monday, since I will be busy each day for the fast...

I work out consistently and I would like to 'cleanse' my system..

so lemon water is the key, no....vitamin water or gatorade...nothing like that???

appreciate the information..

oh yeah, how much lemon with water... 1/2 and 1/2 ....

You will be better off cutting out vitamin water and gatorade from your diet altogether. GL with it.

I fasted once when for a day or two when I was back in my more bible thumping days and thought that was what you were supposed to do, then my Mom went shopping and oought some Bugles and Suzy Q's..............fast over and I am still healthy. Besides if there is undigested red meat in my colon somewhere I want to keep it..................you know.........................incase I go on Survivor or something

Old School,
Thanks for the props bro didn't know you followed my work!!!! Sweet. I know that fasting can be a generally good health practice just isn't for everybody. I like Italian Beefs from Portillos and I don't care if a darn carpenter that was born in a manger in Bethlehem is sitting there watching me eat one on the first Friday of lent. That puppy is good eating. So it gets me a few hundred thousand years in purgatory, so what, whats the worse they can do to me there? Hell I am already a Cubs fan and think O.J. was innocent what could be worse.

Hope this helps,

FDC

I am interested in how this will affect my mind...Old School seems to have had some 'revelations'....

you really should work up to a 3 day fast..

start w/one day a week w/nothing but lemon water..

break the fast w/ruffage and then a small meal later in the evening..

after several weeks of this schedule you can go to a two day fast and break it the same way..

A 3 day fast is not something you just want to do off the cuff..The body and mind go through some very deep cleaning on a 3 day and you should work up to it..

A 3 day should be a goal to reach and then do it once every 30 days..

if ya have any other questions I will be glad to convey the schedule I used and the various foods I ate before and after..

A great way to cleanse if you have the discipline.

the results are obviously amazing...

if you`re a "work-out" guy,i`d guess you`d have to suspend your routine for 3 days?......maybe more if you`re easing your back into eating solid food by just eating "roughage"...

i can do it for 1...maybe 2(usually just 1)...3`d be tough....

the guys on here that are into fitness know how shitty you feel if you basically don`t get any exercise for a few days....and you certainly don`t want to do resistance training while just drinking lemon juice...

and i`d have to think that with not eating for 3 days you`d tend to lose some muscle tone.....

you younger dudes are tough...
