Article from Boston Herald.

Police in Attleboro and the FBI have a gem of a whodunit on their hands trying to figure how thieves who cut through the roof of a family jewelry manufacturer managed to make off with a safe weighing more than a half-ton.

?The detectives are still working on that. The door on the safe alone weighed in excess of 1,000 pounds,? a baffled Attleboro police Capt. David Proia told the Herald yesterday.

?At this particular time, there are no suspects,? he said.

The estimated $2 million booty of bling included diamond-dripping Super Bowl XLII rings ordered for support staff of the New York Giants in honor of the team?s stunning 17-14 upset of the undefeated New England Patriots [team stats] in February.

Proia said there is no evidence as yet to suggest the Giants? rings were specifically targeted. Giants players and coaches received their rings earlier this year. The flashy finger finery screams ?World Champions? and ?NY? over sparkling likenesses of the team?s three Super Bowl trophies.

Neither Proia nor Edward ?Ted? Dion Jr., president of the 40-year-old family-run E.A. Dion, Inc., would elaborate on what part of the 30,000-square-foot, single-story structure the thieves broke into after disabling the alarm system and cutting a hole in the roof to slip through.

?There was a hole in the roof - obviously big enough for someone to fit through,? Proia said.

The break-in was discovered Sunday afternoon shortly before 5 p.m., Proia said, when an E.A. Dion employee unable to retrieve e-mails off-site went to the office at 33 Franklin McKay Road to see if the company?s server was functioning properly.

Dion would only say, ?We?re back up and running for our customers. Our folks have done a great job and we?re moving on from here. Our ambition is to get back up to speed as quickly as possible.?

Boston FBI Special Agent Gail Marcinkiewicz confirmed the feds are assisting with the investigation, but referred questions about the case to Attleboro police.
