I'm mulling over an employment opportunity to make a coast to coast move, and was wondering if anyone had any tips on undertaking this type of venture.

Essentially I'd be moving from an apartment to another apartment, east to west, so that should give you perspective on the quantity of things I'm looking to move. (Standard desk, bed, tvs, etc.).

Anyone have any tips, things to look for in a moving company, or just general experiences you'd like to share? This would be a fairly large undertaking for me and is a factor in my decision making process.

Any family willing to help you move? I moved from the Milwaukee area to the Phoenix area in 2006 (today is actually two years to the day that I arrived in Phoenix). It was about 2,000 miles. I was apartment-to-apartment, just like you.

We mulled over several options, and ulitmately went with a rental Ryder truck. I drove my car, and my Mom and Stepdad drove the truck. Stayed three nights in hotels on the trips, although we could have made it in two if we needed to. I was pretty pleased with that way it all worked out.

I got the truck, and loaded up some boxes and other things that could be moved easily. Locked the truck up and left it at my place. Drove to my hometown (about 40 miles east of St. Paul), spent the night at my Mom's, and early the next morning we drove back to Burlington. We loaded up the big stuff and did some last minute cleaning, and hit the road. We had booked one-way flights for my parents back home to Minneapolis, so they just flew back the day after we arrived and moved in.

If you are making the trip solo, then I would suggest a moving company. I never could have done it without them.

Blackman,
Awhile back, I think it might have been in bjfiniste's moving thread, i wrote a pretty long winded page about movers and moving companies and what to look for.

if yer a single guy, have no "tie downs" where you are now, and this could be a big career move for you... well.. you get all your chips in the middle and move.
:)

seriously, apt to apt move - 1 week from doorstep to doorstep. if yer the one driving the truck.. give it 2 weeks.

search thru some old threads for it. I've got a half dozen coast to coast moves under my belt. Put a lot of info in it. and well, i'm too lazy to redo it all.

Moving company all the way imo. The "new" company may cover your moving expenses, particularly if it's a large company. I would try to work this into your new deal.

Congrats on the new opportunity and good luck:weed:

Thanks guys, great stuff as always.

Marine, I'm going to work the search option and read everything that comes up. Will be a great starting point.

Thanks again.

Blackman............ya know, you could just move "up" and come join us all in :canada1 ya know:tongue

Anyway........I have moved all over North America, lived everywhere it seems.........and I have found the easiest way to move is to just pack clothes and some of your "sentimental stuff" and move into one of those "furnished suites". Now of course I am a single guy and am just responsible for myself, but I find it super easy. Of course the nice "furnished places" are pricey, but I find well worth it. I like the ones where everything is included (heat, water, tv, etc.). Just pay one monthly fee and bang bills are paid.

Just a suggestion:shrug:

Yes, you gave me tons of good info. If you do a search Blackman, it probably would have been in late June or July of 2006.

If the bold part is true, then yes... that is a no-brainer.

Vegas Baby !!
I moved from Ohio to Vegas, 2200 miles. I bought a U-Haul truck off of EBAY, and sold it in Vegas for $700 more than I paid for it !!!

They (U-Haul), wanted $ 1800 to RENT one ! :scared

Blackman, I just moved from SoCal to north central
Arkansas. I got rid of everything, and just loaded
everything I treasured into my pickup truck. I
bought what I needed out here at garage and
rummage sales but was actually given many things
(TV, 2 beds, and more) from my new friends out
here. If you stop and think about it, it is now to
expensive to haul replaceable furniture etc. cross
country. Just a thought.

My brother in law received a stipend for moving here from west Texas. He pocketed the loot and moved himself with a buddy and a Uhaul. My sister flew and avoided the roadtrip. I don't think he minded one bit;)

I'm starting to think this as well. The cost of moving a bed and some dressers is going to be more than just replacing them when I get to California. I'm hoping to hear a finalized offer and make my decision by this weekend, which will be easier once I have all of the factors to consider.
