? Ben Roethlisberger won't do much more than watch Friday night when the Steelers host the Eagles in the preseason opener for each team. The Pro Bowl quarterback, however, will take some snaps in the 7:30 p.m. game. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger will probably play one series before giving way to Charlie Batch. "We'll play it by ear," Tomlin said. The Steelers had been limiting Roethlisberger in practice because of a minor groin problem. He participated fully during Wednesday afternoon's practice.

? Tomlin did rule out four players for the game, including strong safety Troy Polamalu (hamstring) and nose tackle Casey Hampton, who is working his way into shape. Each are on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, though Tomlin said both Polamulu and Hampton are "close" as far as starting to practice. In addition to Polamalu and Hampton, Tomlin said free safety Anthony Smith (groin) and tight end Cody Boyd (shoulder) won't play against the Eagles. Smith practiced yesterday, but he has been sidelined for most of training camp.

? Sean Mahan will start at center tomorrow and Justin Hartwig will get the starting nod the following Thursday when the Steelers play the Bills in Toronto. "Then we'll have a definitive direction as to which way we want to go after that," Tomlin said.

Mahan, who is No. 1 on the depth chart at center, is trying to hold off Hartwig for the starting job. Tomlin said the offensive line starters will play for "roughly" a quarter against the Eagles.

? Free safety Anthony Smith returned to practice with a bang yesterday. Hines Ward can attest to it. Smith blasted Ward after the veteran wideout caught a pass in a seven-on-seven drill during the afternoon practice. Ward stayed down for several seconds before getting up. "You're surprised about it," Ward said of the hit. "I normally don't get hit like that until the preseason games." Smith, who had been sidelined with a pulled groin, has a bit of a history when it comes to belting wideouts at training camp. Last year, he drilled Willie Reid several times during one practice, arousing the anger of the wide receivers. When asked if he will say anything to Smith about dialing it down a notch in practice, Ward said, "We'll talk about it."

? Mewelde Moore, Eddie Drummond and Jeremy Bloom will return punts against the Eagles, coach Mike Tomlin said. Moore will also return kickoffs, along with Reid and rookie Rashard Mendenhall. "The big thing we want to do is to give everybody an opportunity to show what they're capable of doing," Tomlin said. The Steelers were 30th in the NFL in punt returns last season (6.1 yards per return) and 21st in kickoff returns (24.6). Moore is first on the depth chart at both kickoff and punt returner.

? Tomlin said Lawrence Timmons will play inside linebacker against the Eagles. Timmons, who is behind Larry Foote at right inside linebacker, has played both inside and outside during training camp. ... Punter Daniel Sepulveda had surgery yesterday to repair the torn ACL in his right knee.

Eagles' offense facing test

- Though preseason games should not be taken as gospel, there are insights Eagles coach Andy Reid can glean tonight in Pittsburgh when the Eagles and Steelers open their exhibition schedules.

Some key questions are:

How does a rejuvenated quarterback Donovan McNabb and an improved offense stack up against the No. 1 defense in the NFL from a year ago?

Is Max Jean-Gilles ready to assume the right-guard spot during Shawn Andrews' absence?

How ready are the club's new returners - Lorenzo Booker and DeSean Jackson?

"I look forward to the opportunity to play in a game against somebody else here, besides beating on ourselves," Reid said yesterday after a morning walk-through.

"The Steelers, obviously, are a good football team - well-coached, with a lot of talent," he said. "It will be good to get in there and see what looks good and see what we need to continue to work on."

Reid's staff seemed pleased with the additions on offense, including the wrinkles added to the passing game. Is this an early barometer for potential success, given that the Steelers' defense once again led the NFL in total defense, yielding an average of 266.4 yards?

"I don't think you'll see the best in either team from what's going to happen down the road," Reid said.

"However, there are a couple of things with this team that you get," he said, referring to the Steelers.

"You get a very solid defense" with "a great defensive coordinator" in Dick LeBeau, and a head coach in Mike Tomlin who was "a great defensive coordinator."

In addition, the Eagles will have an opportunity to face a 3-4 defense, "which we don't really practice against," Reid said. "That's not what our team does here, so it's a little bit twofold there."

The first and second units will each play a quarter and a half. The third unit will play the fourth quarter. Reid expects every player to get reps.

"I mentioned yesterday that we've cut, obviously, the number of plays down from what we have installed in training camp here just so the guys can get out there and function, in particular the young guys," Reid said.

"They can get out there and function, and they're not worried about what the play is," he said.

Everyone wants to see how Jean-Gilles, 24, who has been playing in place of Andrews in camp, fares against a top defensive line in pass coverage. Jean-Gilles is a third-year player from Georgia.

"That's the thing he's worked hardest on," Reid said. "I think he's done a good job with it, but, again, we'll get to see him against different people here. We'll see how he does."

Jean-Gilles said he wouldn't be nervous and felt he had earned the starting spot.

"It's going to be pretty interesting," he said. "I'm going to have a lot of fun out there, coming out and starting" with the No. 1 unit. "I'm going to try and showcase my talent and let the coaches know I'm ready. . . . I'm going to show them what I got."

Booker, who didn't return kicks as a Miami Dolphin, will do that tonight while the rookie Jackson handles punts. Reid said he would pay close attention to his special teams, where "bubble" players can earn or lose a spot.

"That's a big part of it," Reid said. "I said this early in camp, that there are going to be certain guys that make this football team because of special teams. If everything is equal, or close to, and you're excelling on special teams, then you're going to be the guy that makes this club.

"We've got to improve in that area from last year. We think we've addressed it, and now we've got to execute it."

Doctor visit. Rich Moran, Andrews' agent, said everything looked positive after the guard's visit to a doctor yesterday. Andrews said this week that he was suffering from depression.

Moran also said that all future comments regarding Andrews would come from the Eagles. No one from the team was available for comment.

Injuries. Along with Andrews, cornerback Asante Samuel, defensive end Victor Abiamiri, offensive tackle Franklin Dunbar, and defensive tackles Kimo von Oelhoffen and Montae Reagor will not play tonight.

Receiver Reggie Brown still has an inflamed Achilles tendon and is questionable.

Jarred. Hines Ward isn't happy with the jarring hits safety Anthony Smith has been laying on Steelers receivers at camp in Latrobe, Pa. Ward was a victim of one Wednesday.

"I normally don't get hit like that during the preseason till preseason games," Ward told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It is what it is. I'm not going to harp about it."

New faces. Pittsburgh has 31 new faces in camp, including seven draft picks and 11 rookie free agents. This will be the Eagles' first look at running back Rashard Mendenhall, a first-round draft choice from Illinois. . . . Reid was asked about owner Jeffrey Lurie's statement this week that cornerback Lito Sheppard's YPA - yards per attempt - wasn't good enough. "I think I might just let that thing die right there," Reid said.
