Chris Russo has left WFAN-AM, breaking up the sports talk giant?s ?Mike and the Mad Dog? show two weeks short of its 19th anniversary.

Mike Francesa will become the solo host of the afternoon drive program, and WFAN announced Thursday night that it had signed him to a multiyear contract. Terms were not released.

?Mike and Chris pioneered the genre more than 18 years ago and have shaped the sports talk format into what it is today,? WFAN operations director Mark Chernoff said in a statement. ?We wish Chris nothing but the best and look forward to all that Mike will do in a role in which he has excelled at for years.?

?Mike and the Mad Dog? started broadcasting in September 1989. According to winter 2008 data from Arbitron, the show had more than 659,000 cumulative listeners over the course of a week.

Francesa has been with WFAN since 1987.

Dude, how am I going to kill time in the afternoons during the winter months? Doggy's background rants were the only thing that kept me going at work.

Truly a sad day. I grew up w/those guys and learned sports listening during big knick games in the early 90s, mets/yankees, giants, etc and it was really a fantastic and funny show. Good interviews and tough questions which most cities guys dont do and just very unique and entertaining....plus they got people through work, school, driving etc every day...Hard for outsaide of ny/nj area to understand but it was really awesome, and now w/o mad dogs personality it wont be anywhere near the same....well, all good things come to an end, 19 years is a pretty good run:clap:

Mad Dog probably going to go to satellite radio.
I guess all these years together they got sick of eachother, it was more Francesha that got fed up with Mad Dog.
Mad Dog likes to instigate and poke some fun can't blame him for trying to have some fun with the listeners.
Wish him well wherever he winds up.

spartan, i'm a few towns over from you in rockville centre.....yeah, they did get sick of each other for sure....I think Mad Dog just wanted more money and a new solo opportunity, Mike's pretty pompous 19 yrs is a long time and they probably just ran their course....I loved them both together, Mike solo will still be good but they had great chemistry that cant really be duplicated...it will be interesting to hear Mad Dog solo also

Sportsfan I hope our Giants have a good year.
I have a question what happened to Jared Lorenzen did he get cut?
I know about the other 2 QB's on the roster just asking

I hope so too, I will be at the opener I cant wait.......I'm not sure about Lorenzen, he may have gotten cut I think? I think Carr and Wright are competing for the backup spot.
