Had to love the one question about how to deal with Evil. You have Barrick answering the question like a person who actually thinks ,then you have McCain answering the question Bush style with a one word answer. Of course the redneck audience goes wild (fooled again)with McCains answer. This country deserves what it gets. Lets not forget that McCain is gonna bring back Bin Laden and take him to the gates of hell (to another huge round of applause). Hasn't he had any say in this matter the last eight years? Gotta love Barrick giving the Republicans the opportunity to slime him since he needed to go on vacation. This looks like Kerry all over again. McCain must have loved that format Saturday night. You just lie and go on to the next question. How does Obama's team not know this is gonna happen? Another year of guys (even on this site) fighting for the democrats to win harder then the actual democrats running. One party full of thieves and con artists and the other full of clueless clowns.

Apparently most didn't see it your way--spongebob

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.

The poll was taken Thursday through Saturday as Obama wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Hawaii that ceded the political spotlight to McCain, who seized on Russia's invasion of Georgia to emphasize his foreign policy views.

"There is no doubt the campaign to discredit Obama is paying off for McCain right now," pollster John Zogby said. "This is a significant ebb for Obama."

McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent, over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the economy -- an issue nearly half of voters said was their top concern in the November 4 presidential election.

That margin reversed Obama's 4-point edge last month on the economy over McCain, an Arizona senator and former Vietnam prisoner of war who has admitted a lack of economic expertise and shows far greater interest in foreign and military policy.

McCain has been on the offensive against Obama during the last month over energy concerns, with polls showing strong majorities supporting his call for an expansion of offshore oil drilling as gasoline prices hover near $4 a gallon.

Obama had opposed new offshore drilling, but said recently he would support a limited expansion as part of a comprehensive energy program.

That was one of several recent policy shifts for Obama, as he positions himself for the general election battle. But Zogby said the changes could be taking a toll on Obama's support, particularly among Democrats and self-described liberals.

"That hairline difference between nuance and what appears to be flip-flopping is hurting him with liberal voters," Zogby said.

Obama's support among Democrats fell 9 percentage points this month to 74 percent, while McCain has the backing of 81 percent of Republicans. Support for Obama, an Illinois senator, fell 12 percentage points among liberals, with 10 percent of liberals still undecided compared to 9 percent of conservatives.

OBAMA NEEDS TO WORK ON BASE

"Conservatives were supposed to be the bigger problem for McCain," Zogby said. "Obama still has work to do on his base. At this point McCain seems to be doing a better job with his."

The dip in support for Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, cut across demographic and ideological lines. He slipped among Catholics, born-again Christians, women, independents and younger voters. He retained the support of more than 90 percent of black voters.

"There were no wild swings, there isn't one group that is radically different than last month or even two months ago. It was just a steady decline for Obama across the board," Zogby said.

Obama's support among voters between the ages of 18 and 29, which had been one of his strengths, slipped 12 percentage points to 52 percent. McCain, who will turn 72 next week, was winning 40 percent of younger voters.

"Those are not the numbers Obama needs to win," Zogby said about Americans under 30. The 47-year-old is counting on a strong turnout among young voters, a key bloc of support during his primary battle with New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.

It made little difference when independent candidate Ralph Nader and Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr, who are both trying to add their names to state ballots.

McCain still held a 5-point edge over Obama, 44 percent to 39 percent, when all four names were included. Barr earned 3 percent and Nader 2 percent.

Most national polls have given Obama a narrow lead over McCain throughout the summer. In the Reuters/Zogby poll, Obama had a 5-point lead in June, shortly after he clinched the Democratic nomination, and an 8-point lead on McCain in May.

The telephone poll of 1,089 likely voters had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

The poll was taken as both candidates head into their nominating conventions and the announcements of their choices of vice presidential picks. The Democratic convention begins on Monday in Denver, with the Republican convention opening the next Monday, September 1, in St. Paul, Minnesota.

kick back and enjoy russia`s rape of georgia...the kidnap of blindfolded georgian soldiers and police paraded on stolen humvees at gunpoint(this would qualify as torture at gitmo)......

destroying apartment buildings, the port, the coast guard, the police infrastructure....

bro,no need to be so bummed out....things are pretty peachy(from a left wing,anti-western perspective)....

spongy quote:

in spongy`s world,"uhhhh" = complexity......

in the minds of most normal folks, mclame`s answers were "concise" and `bock`s "evasive"....

but, that`s why we love "he who drives old and respected posters off the site"..............

excellent post sponge.

was watching Bill Maher on larry king last night and he pretty much echoed what you are saying. McSame's response to the evil question by warren was "Defeat it." Too which he got a thunderous applause from the evangelical audience.

I've got to tell my right wing friends, I am starting to come around to your way of thinking. I, like the current administration have decided to pick and choose which parts of the Constitution I will enforce and which parts I will ignore.

Okay, constitutionalists out there, where is the right to vote? I am convinced that any member of the audience who gave thunderous applause to a candidate who honestly and sincerely responds to a question about evil with the answer "defeat it" should automatically lose the right to vote.

Anyone with me on this?

Sponge, the audience was not fooled. McBush gave them exactly what they want to hear. God talk. We, the good guys, Americans, Christians, wholesome, who do no wrong, will defeat, evil, the bad guys, Muslims, sleezy, arabs, pure and simple. Key word simple. Black and white. Cowboys and indians. Fantasy and reality.

Its, Leave it to Beaver vs. The Crying Game. As long as religion plays a role in the political arena we are going to have nut cases like McCain and Bush. I'm very much looking forward to Maher's movie coming out in October call Religiousity or something like that. There are very few points that he and I disagree on.

the whole thing was predicated on faith based issues.....

this was mccain`s homecourt.....i`m sure the reaction would have been completely different if communists (say, the aclu)would have sponsored the dialogue...

it was at a "church".....obama thought he could steal a little evangelical support....looks like he thought wrong....

but,i give him an "a" for effort...

Stevie:

Faith. And when that doesn't work, Surge, the sequel. The funny thing is that when "evil is defeated" isn't Warren out of a job? What the heck do we do with all these mega churches that have popped up all over suburbia?

And frankly, if God is all powerful, why doesn't he defeat evil for us? Doesn't make much sense to me that he has all this evil running around makin a ruckus down here with all these guys becomin pastors and ministers and building churches and God amusement parks in Florida raising money when all he's got to do is poof em and there gone.

Can you see Joel and Victoria Osteen teaming up and working as real estate agents. I can. Anyway, how can anyone with a rational mind believe that these guys, Warren, Robertson, Falwell, have anymore insight as to what is going to happen to us when we die than anyone else? I mean really? They are just like you and me.

except maybe, better salesmen.

Skully:

I'd love to see Warren, Robertson, Jackson, Sharpton and all the other "Reverands" go back to the churchs, synagogues, temples, and mosques or wherever else they came from and never hear another word out of them. I could care less about there opinions, positions, political views, etc.

There was a time for MLK and Billy Graham. Although Graham shades to the right, he basically stays out of the fray. Keep all of these people out of politics and keep all politics out of religion.

John McCain said he would defeat evil. He did not say how and even if he did, I doubt he would know how to. John McCain keeps telling all that will listen that He knows how to get binlanden and he will get him. My question to the great senator would be. If you know how to get him why haven't you shared this with our military and our current administration ? Politics ahead of country ? Anyone with 1/2 a brain has to think : WHAT IS THIS FOOL TALKING ABOUT !!! The way to fight global terror is economically. Get as many countries and people around the wourld endured to Americas prosperity and the prosperity of the free world. I do mean endured. I'm not talking about the give aways that we take part in, when our government gives away American Tax payers wealth to our enemies and the enemies of people that love peace and freedon around the world. Create allise in the fight. This administration has created less allies, less friends of America and more terrorist. Coventional wars will never stop terror, you may win a battle here and there but you can't win. Terror can only be contained. What happened in NYC can happen again. What happened in Oklahoma City can happen again. Barack Obamam said : we cannot erase evil from the world but we can be soldiers in that process & we can confront evil when we see it. I couldn't agree more. He said something about evil is every where.. He mentioned something about abused children. Abused children in the world is the birth place for so much evil. I think Obama appeals to the thinking man. America has shown that we love sound bites and tough talk. 43 is the poster boy for that. What ever happens, We will get the president we deserve.

John McCain said : life starts at conception. I couldn't agree more... The only problem is, most of the people that believe that do nothing for that life after conception. Eight yrs of Reagan, 12 of Bush and we still have abortion in this Country, It not going away, It's a neccessary evil. I voted for 16 of those 20 yrs but not because of this issue. America needs legal abortion for the masses... People with enough money and power will always get theirs. In most cases abortions are mercy killings. The Majority of Americans that are Pro Life historically have proven that they are at conception and the birth. After that, the record is not very good. We put dogs and cats and horses down. We can't show mercy on humans ? Any woman that could make the decision to abort, does not do that easily in most cases. What ever her reasons are, and I do think it's a womans right to make the call, why would we want to bring a child into this world where evil does exist and is never going away, if the mother would rather kill it ? I know, there are those 1 in a million stories, we might find a cure for cancer........... The amount of unwanted children abused in this country leads to the cycle of evil.

The People of the world if they could vote in our election would vote for Obama. The far right uses that to say that this is some kind of negative against him. They try to tell you that terrorist would vote for him. So what ? America does not belong to John McCain and those Americans that think they own it. America belongs to the world and all that believe in the American dream. When you take away the American Dream, you dismantle the possibilities for everyone that understands the dream, foreign and domestic. You take away the American dream and you have terror against America. Just words ? Perception is better than most realities. We and the rest of the world need to believe in the American possibilities again. The dream needs to be revived. Like our great president has said : you are with us or against us. I couldn't agree more !
