THE SKINNY

The Padres have ballyhooed several pitching prospects in their farm system since last offseason, but they repeatedly have decided against promoting any of them. Instead they have given starts and relief jobs to minor league veterans, and Hayhurst is the latest. A reliever drafted out of Kent State by the Padres in 2003, the 27-year-old will make his major league debut Saturday. He was 3-5 with a 4.81 ERA for Triple-A Portland this year.

Zito is one of several pitchers this year who brought a high ERA into the game, then shut down the Padres. The University of San Diego High School alum is 2-2 with a 3.05 ERA against the Padres in his career. This season, he has a strikeout-walk ratio of 86:82.

Because Hayhurst has made only two starts, the Padres aren't expecting him to work deep into the game. "Hopefully he can get us into the fifth inning, or the sixth," Black said.

Towers said Hayhurst probably will move to the bullpen after Saturday in anticipation of either Young or Shawn Estes returning to the rotation.

I don't play a lot of overs, but there is no way in hell you could bet under here with any confidence. It's 8.5 and they're juicing the over most places.

Zito's K/BB ratio is unbelievable. That has one mess after another written all over it.

Even with the juice, over 8.5 wouldn't be a bad play....
