South Carolina at UGA -7

The Gamecocks stepped on their... (well you get the idea) in last Thursday's loss at Vanderbilt. The bigger story to me is the loss of WR Kenny McKinley for South Carolina. This is one weapon that they can't afford to be without. The old saying is don't bring a knife to a gun fight... and I don't think the Ole Ball Coach is packing any heat. Not a fan of playing two QBs and that's exactly what CSS is planning to do. Also, can you say Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford? Georgia Coach Mark Richt won't let his team forget the 16-12 home loss to the 'Cocks from last season. While this game might be close for the first 15-20 minutes, I see the Dawgs pulling away by halftime and sending Spurrier and his birds home with an 0-2 conference record.

My prediction is Dawgs 27-10

My bet is UGA -7

UAB +31 at UcheaT

Pretty basic premise in my opinion... and it will be a common theme for a few other SEC coaches. How long does Phat Phil keep the starters in? The Viles are going to be one pissed off team having to sit around for two weeks since their embarrassing loss at UCLA. Will they get caught looking ahead to their annual grudge match with the Reptiles of Florida? I doubt it, but just don't think that even after two weeks they will be overly fired up to play a team from Conference USA. While UcheaT might get up four or five TDs, I think that the Blazers can get a backdoor cover against the Viles defense.

My prediction is 38-13 UcheaT

My pick.... lean towards UAB +31

Awbarn at Mississippi State +10

I've already gone on record earlier this week as picking this as one of my upsets. No reason for me to change my mind now. While revenge might be on the Tigers' mind (Bulldogs won last year 19-14), I think they are looking towards their match up with the Bayou Bengals next week on the Plains. The Bulldog D will need to create a few turnovers to pull the upset and I believe that Awbarn QB Chris Todd will be happy to oblige. I'm counting on Derek Pegues to have a big game for the Bulldogs. MSU will need to play a near error free game to pull the upset. It might not happen, but I don't think that Awbie has a cakewalk either.

My prediction is Bulldogs 21-17

My bet is MSU +10

Rice at Vanderbilt -8

Is this the year that Vandy finally breaks through and wins that elusive 6th game and possible bowl berth? Looking at their schedule, I doubt it, but if they ARE going to accomplish this goal, this weekend's game against Rice is a must win. The Owls are coming off an improbable 42-35 win at Memphis, scoring 29 points in the 4th quarter. Vandy is still basking in their second straight win over South Carolina. The main reason I like Vandy... Rice allowed a miserable Memphis team to score 35 points last week. Not that the 'Dores are an offensive juggernaut, but QB Chris Nickson isn't all that bad and he hands off to a stud RB in Jared Hawkins. I like Vandy to be in control the entire game and improve to 3-0. Show your gold!

My prediction is 35-20 Vandy

My bet is Vandy -8

Western Kentucky +28 at Alabama

Again, another possible trap game here. How long will Nick Saban keep his starters in the game? More importantly, how will his team come out after a very lackluster performance against Tulane last weekend? Andre Smith apparently was missed more than expected on the OL last Saturday. He will be back and should be able to create some big holes for the Crimson Tide's RBs. The Hilltoppers are without QB K.J. Black due to injury and that certainly can't be of any comfort to the WKU coaching staff. The only reason I think that WKU covers is that Saban pulls the starters after halftime and there is the possibility of a backdoor cover against the scrubs. Two scores by WKU should make the +28 a winner.

My prediction is Alabama 35-13

My pick.... lean towards WKU +28

MTSU +18 at Kentucky

The Wildcats are in the midst of a three game cakewalk, having defeated Norfolk State last weekend and hosting Western Kentucky in two weeks. The Blue Raiders will come into the Commonwealth brimming with confidence after beating Maryland 24-14 at home. Will their heads still be in the clouds? Will UK decide to play a full 60 minutes? This line has jumped 2 points and might go up again before kickoff. If MTSU can force a few turnovers, they might make the Wildcat faithful squirm in their seats for 30 minutes. Ultimately the UK defense will wear down the Blue Raiders and should be up by two TDs in the fourth quarter. The bourbon will be flowing at the end of the game.

My prediction is Kentucky 31-17

My bet is MTSU +18

I think I like the under in this game. Both teams off of emotional wins, and both (off top of my head) have lookahead type games next week. I have found low scoring affairs are common in this situation. GL:weed:

North Texas at LSwho -42

If it's Saturday, they must be dodging a hurricane in the Gulf Coast area. It looks like the Bayou State is going to avoid a direct hit from Ike and the game is being played as scheduled... at night... in Death Valley. I've been to a night game in Baton Rouge and I couldn't hear myself think until Monday. Having said all that, I can't begin to decide how to go here. 42 points is an awful lot to give up, but North Texas is pretty ugly. In my opinion, if the Mean Green are only down three or four TDs at halftime they are going to be happy. When will Les call off the dogs? How hard will it be raining and what condition will Tiger Stadium's field be in? I just don't think North Texas can score against the Tigers... maybe a FG or a defensive score, that's it.

My prediction is LSU 49-0

My pick.... lean towards LSwho -42

Stop the presses! A Bama fan and a Tennessee fan agreeing?

Oxford is one of the best places to tailgate on a Saturday afternoon. Miss USA contestants everywhere you look! It is truly an experience. I bought a pair of seersucker shorts (at the Cavalier Shop from Mr. Rex "T-bone" Jarrett in Bruce, MS) while in college at Memphrica State so I could fit in at the Grove.

My dad played football at Memphis State (69-73) for Spook Murphy. Fast forward 21 years and I was an equipment manager for the football and baseball teams for three years. Ah yes, the Chuck Stobart years... what a tool he was. I was there when Penny was in school. From Prop 48 to model student kurby
