WKU players say Cats can't handle Alabama

LEXINGTON ? Most of Western Kentucky?s players liked what they saw from Kentucky, but don?t think the Wildcats will be able to match up with No. 8 Alabama.

?Alabama is not a joke,? Western quarterback A.J. Black said. ?Alabama is tough. They?ve been blanking everybody.?

Kentucky takes on the Crimson Tide in its conference opener this Saturday in a nationally-televised contest in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide is 2-0 in the SEC after its win over Georgia on Saturday and 5-0 overall in Nick Saban?s second season as coach.

Black said Saban?s presence in Tuscaloosa is the biggest difference between Alabama and Kentucky.

?Nick Saban is getting the job done down there,? he said. ?It starts at the top and it filters down.?

The Hilltoppers, who are making the transition to Division I-A, played Alabama on Sept. 13 in Tuscaloosa and had a hard time moving the ball against Saban?s squad.

Western managed 158 total yards against Alabama and had just 42 yards rushing in a 41-7 loss.

Against the Wildcats, the Hilltoppers had a season-low 157 total yards and were held to 15 yards passing.

Despite the numbers between the two teams that indicate a possible close encounter next week, former Lincoln County standout Braxton Miller said Kentucky ?wasn?t even close? to Alabama.

?To me personally, I didn?t think Kentucky was that good,? Miller said.

Western running back Bobby Rainey, who led all rushers with 99 yards, including 96 in the opening half, had 11 yards against Alabama on four carries.

Rainey didn?t play at Alabama, but impressed the Western coaching staff with 144 all-purpose yards, including a 92-yard kickoff return to set up a touchdown in a 50-9 win over Murray State last week. He got the bulk of the carries Saturday as well.

Rainey was impressed with Kentucky?s defense, but he still gives Alabama the edge.

?Alabama is bigger and faster,? he said. ?We didn?t have good rushing yards against Alabama, but if you look at it against Kentucky, we did. We moved the ball, but they made plays, but we couldn?t punch it in.?

Because of an injury, Black didn?t play against Alabama, but liked Kentucky?s defense, especially its pass rush, which had four sacks against Western.

?They were consistent and the tackles gave a good push every play,? he said. ?They were consistently giving us problems in the passing game. They were better than I thought. They were an SEC team, and on film, I didn?t think they were a usual SEC team.?

Black said Kentucky?s defense set the tone in the first quarter.

?Every step I made, they were in my face,? he said. ?They are as good as advertised. Their defensive line is good. It all starts up front. They were in my face all day. They came to play.?

Tristan Jones in a 30-yard touchdown pass for Western?s only score at Alabama. Jones didn?t have a catch against the Wildcats and said they were impressive, but he said Alabama is quicker on both sides of the ball.

?They?re both good teams,? Jones said. ?Kentucky is young, but Alabama has a hand on them. Alabama has more speed and experience.?

Rainey said Kentucky would need to come out prepared in order to be successful against the Crimson Tide, who will likely move up in the rankings from No. 8 following their win over Georgia.

?They came in thinking it was a rollover game,? Rainey said. ?There?s no comparison between them and Alabama. You can?t beat Alabama.?

I can't imagine that I won't be on Kentucky this week. Saban has stumbled in this type of game historically, and I think I know the reason. It not possible for the kids to keep up with Nick's (and staff's) level of intensity week to week.

It would make sense for them to have a letdown. Kids are kids and it will be Saban's number 1 job this week to keep their egos in check. He already started in his press conference last night. Reading articles like this won't help.

I do think that the main difference from last year to this year is the players all buy into what Saban is selling. At least publicly they are saying all the right things.

Nick Saban tried to calm the hysteria sure to follow the big win over No.3 Georgia.

"If you want to drink the Kool-Aid (about how good the Tide is) ...," he said, and then he stopped. "It happens every week. I'm just the only person that talks about it, and then you guys (in the media) beat me up about it, which is all right. I don't mind. Then the next week they say `He's right. By God, he was right.'"

Alabama safety Rashad Johnson got Saban's message.

"You're gonna hear a lot of talk about national championship and SEC championship," Johnson said. "But it's important to turn the page because we have another SEC opponent next week (in Kentucky) that's undefeated."

UK's Micah Johnson doubtful for Alabama

UK's Micah Johnson doubtful for Alabama

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky football team might have to face Alabama's potent ground game on Saturday without one of its best run-stuffers.

Linebacker Micah Johnson, who missed last night's game against Western Kentucky with a high ankle sprain, is doubtful for Saturday's game at No. 2 Alabama, UK coach Rich Brooks said today on his weekly teleconference.

It's doubtful that quarterback/wide receiver Randall Cobb, backup defensive tackle Ricky Lumpkin and Johnson ? all of whom have high ankle sprains ? will be ready to go against the Tide, Brooks said.

And Johnson, the Wildcats' starting middle linebacker, might be the least likely of all.

"Micah has kind of slipped to the rear of the pack, according to the medical report this morning," Brooks said. "He's experiencing a little more pain and (is) not as functional at this point as the other two."

Johnson is UK's second-leading tackler with 17 total stops despite missing the WKU game. His absence would be significant against a Crimson Tide team that leads the Southeastern Conference in rushing at 215.2 yards per game.

"Obviously with Micah, we're a much better defensive unit, particularly when we play a three-linebacker defense," Brooks said. "And Alabama will have us in a three-linebacker defense quite a bit of the time, because they are more of a running team. They do give you a variety of sets and they do spread the field a little but, but they also can line up and bloody your nose, and you need all three linebackers in there when they're in those formations."

UK (4-0) will be missing a key player on its offensive line as it visits Tuscaloosa, Ala. Justin Jeffries sprained a medial collateral ligament in a knee against the Hilltoppers, Brooks said, and will not play against Alabama (5-0).

Brooks expects fullback John Conner (sprained foot), wide receiver DeMoreo Ford (concussion), tight end T.C. Drake (sprained ankle) and tailback Tony Dixon (sprained ankle) to return to practice by Tuesday or Wednesday.

The only time I've seen UK play was their opener against Louisville. I did watch a few minutes of their game with Middle Tennessee and was not impressed. They did whip up on Western Kentucky just like Alabama did, so who knows.

From what I'm reading, Kentucky is going to be without at least three defensive starters and an offensive lineman. After the Wildcats, 'Bama has a bye week, then it's Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa and the Viles in ObKnoxville.

I'm starting to wonder just 'who' can stay with Bama...My Cats haven't played anyone to speak of...and although we have a decent defense for once, I'm afraid the offense won't be able to give them any rest...It may be a bad spot for the Tide psychologically speaking...but I wouldn't bet against them...just to dominating on both sides of the line of scrimmage and definitely have the more experienced QB...Just wanna get out of this one alive...:scared ...as they say.

Hey Al, hope all is well and THANKS for the donation!

Do you think that Kentucky's defense will be able to hold Bama down considering their injuries?

The Wildcats won't be going into Tuscaloosa at full strength. Starting right tackle Justin Jeffries is out with a sprained knee ligament suffered in the Western Kentucky game. Brooks also isn't expecting to get the three players who suffered high ankle sprains against Middle Tennessee State back this week, either. He listed middle linebacker Micah Johnson, quarterback/wide receiver Randall Cobb and defensive tackle Ricky Lumpkin as doubtful.

He does go on to say that they will be re-evaluated later this week, but it's highly doubtful their status changes.

I would think this is not very good for the Wildcats.

Alabama has a bye week after this game.

They can start preparing for the upstart Mississippi

team. Another home game in Tuscaloosa.

I cannot bring myself to wager on this game.

You got to know when to hold em and know when to fold em.

Big win has Bama backers drinking costly Kool-Aid

Big win has Bama backers drinking costly Kool-Aid

Who wants Kool-Aid?

The Alabama Crimson Tide?s impressive 41-30 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs has bettors dying of thirst for the infamous sweet stuff that coach Nick Saban has been so cautious of.

Rabid Crimson Tide fans are busting through the walls of sportsbooks, money in hand, bellowing ?Oh yeah!? to Bama as a 16 ?-point home favorite against the Kentucky Wildcats this weekend.

?The public is jumping all over them, putting Alabama in almost every teaser they make,? says Randy Scott, sportsbook manager for betEd.com. ?They are getting a lot of respect from the public and we try to keep up by adding points to the opening spread.?

Oddsmakers say that if Bama had lost last Saturday?s showdown by a touchdown, as predicted by the 6 ?-point number, it would only be a 10-point favorite versus Kentucky. This puts the worth of the Crimson Tide?s W to the spread at about a touchdown for a game that reeks of letdown.
