Clemson relieved Tommy Bowden of his coaching duties Monday morning.

Tommy Bowden went 72-45 in 10 seasons at Clemson.
Assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Dabo Swinney will serve as interim coach against Georgia Tech on Saturday, multiple sources told TigerIllustrated.com, a Rivals.com Web site. There has been no word on the status for the remaining assistants.

Bowden was rumored to be a candidate at Arkansas after last season, but he signed a four-year contract extension in December. The contract would have kept him at Clemson through 2014. There reportedly is a $4 million buyout.

Bowden is 72-45 in 10 seasons at Clemson, including a 42-31 mark in the ACC. He became coach at Clemson in 1999, replacing Tommy West, after leading Tulane to an unbeaten season in 1998.

Clemson has not won the ACC since 1991, the year before Florida State joined the league. Under Bowden, Clemson never has finished higher than third in the ACC or second in the ACC Atlantic Division.

Bowden never had a losing season at Clemson and never finished below .500 in conference play. He went 7-2 against rival South Carolina and won four of the past five games against his father, Bobby, at Florida State.

A 12-7 loss to Wake Forest on Thursday was Bowden's last game. The loss dropped the Tigers to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Clemson ? which had 16 returning starters ? was ranked ninth in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 but fell out of the poll by the end of September.

The Tigers began the season with a 34-10 loss to Alabama before winning three consecutive games. Clemson then sustained consecutive losses to Maryland and Wake Forest.

Last Friday, a day after Clemson amassed only 128 total yards against Wake Forest, Bowden benched Cullen Harper for sophomore Willy Korn. Harper was the ACC's player of the year last season, but has thrown six interceptions and four touchdowns this season. Despite returning tailbacks James Davis and C.J. Spiller, Clemson ranks only sixth in the ACC in rushing. Davis and Spiller combined for 35 rushing yards against Wake Forest.

The Tigers were within a game of reaching the ACC title game last season before a 20-17 home loss to Boston College. The Tigers led 10-3 going into the fourth quarter and 17-13 with 5:28 to go before Eagles quarterback Matt Ryan led the game-winning drive in the final two minutes.

their cup of coffee. Will be interesting to see
what pans out.

Not a surprising move considering the expectations everyone had for Clemson this season.

Still, it's not like Clemson is a major player in college football (i.e. Oklahoma, LSU, Florida, USC, etc.). They last won a national championship in 1981 and haven't won a conference championship since 1991.

The man was honest (as far as we can tell) and beat South Carolina 7 out of 9 times. He just didn't win enough games I suppose.

For the record, All Bowdens ought to be out of
coaching football, especially Bobby, that sob
doesn't know where he is half the time, better
yet coaching. His teams have consistently under performed the last 10 years or so.

The Bowdens suck ass......I only wish Bobby
had a pair, so that he would realize his time has come and gone, now he is just burying the
Noles.

Florida St is just like Washington, in the respect that once they get rid of their respective horrifically bad coaches, they can then stop the bleeding and begin rebuilding it.....

U.S. American
from collegefootballnews.com:

The Top Candidates To Replace Bowden

1. Will Muschamp, defensive coordinator, Texas
His defense got ripped up by Oklahoma, but he?s still given credit for his Longhorns getting pressure on Sam Bradford and closing things up in the second half (for the most part). A rent-a-coach for the Longhorns, Muschamp has an SEC background, a proven track record, and will be the hot name for every coaching vacancy until he?s hired away.

2. Lane Kiffin, former Oakland Raider head coach
Considered one of the brightest young minds in football, even with Al Davis trying to tear him down, Kiffin has all the makings of an elite college head coach. The son of NFL legendary defensive coordinator, Monte, Lane combines the defensive toughness with a mindset for the offense.

3. Bobby Johnson, Vanderbilt head coach
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Johnson gets the state?s football scene. Not only was he a good corner for Clemson in the early 1970s, but he showed this year that he can beat South Carolina. Don?t? discount what a big deal that is to Clemson fans. His stock will never be higher, but he has to fight the age issue. He?s 59.

4. Brent Venables, Oklahoma defensive coordinator
It?s hit or miss when it comes to the success of Oklahoma assistants as head coaches, but the OU defensive coordinator is a primetime recruiter who has put together several of the nation?s top defenses. Being the defensive coordinator for Bob Stoops is sort of like being Dave Grohl?s drummer; if you?re good, you?ve earned the seal of approval. However, he doesn?t have any head coaching experience or any ties to the ACC.

5. Jim McElwain, Alabama offensive coordinator
The hot coordinator on the hot team, McElwain came over from Fresno State and has helped take a mediocre (by SEC standards) offense and made it shine. While he?s great at getting a passing game to go, he?s better at producing tough, physical attacks.

6. Jim Grobe, Wake Forest head coach
The 56-year-old has built an ACC power at Wake Forest. If you can?t beat him, buy him. A true ACC man, who played at Virginia, he?s widely known for being among the nation?s most respected and effective head coaches.

7. Al Golden, Temple head coach
The former Penn State tight end is only 39 and might need one more stepping-stone job before he can get a plum gig like Clemson, but he?s on everyone?s radar. If you can recruit at Temple, you can recruit anywhere. After starting out under George Welsh, Groh was a major factor building Virginia into a decent success under Al Groh. He?d make the Clemson defense instantly better.

8. Bill Cowher, CBS studio analyst
This is the dream pick if Clemson wants to open up the checkbook. Cowher has been open about considering the coaching life again, but he?s more likely going to break the bank for some NFL team, possibly Cleveland or Kansas City if and when those jobs open up. However, the NC State grad hasn?t ruled out the college game, and if Clemson is ready to go Saban and get into the highest-paid college coach range, this isn?t as far-fetched a possibility as it might appear.

Cullen Harper surgery

Cullen Harper surgery

Just heard (not confirmed) that Cullen Harper is having surgery on left shoulder and will be out for 4 weeks at least. Leaves Clemson with a freshman QB playing and 3rd string back up.
