Has anyone every had it?

Went to the doctor today following an MRI and he says I have a tear in the ACL.:scared

I can walk on my leg with little problem, but it does hurt after many hours. I did this last Saturday and the sweeling has gone down and the pain is subsiding somewhat.

He says, "When do you want to schedule this surgery" and I said hold on, let me talk with the wife and I will call you back.

Question is,

1. Me and the lady were talking about getting a second opinion

2. How long will I be down, my job does not let me be out of commission for long.

3. Can I rehabilitate it and not have surgery.

Obviously the doctor said I can has arthritis more so down the road.

Just trying to see what people have done and if they have had the surgery, how long should I look to be down for?

Also, this is the surgery where he takes a graft from the other knee to fix it, so what about the other knee.

Thanks for chiming in......................

Think you can go to work in about a month. if you were playing sports it would be about 6-9 months

Get on crutches immediately so you don't do further damage and see another Dr. Usually a TORN ACL will heal on it's own, a SEVERED ACL always needs surgery.

I had a severed ACL, a torn MCL and a shattered Meniscus. The ACL was replaced with a tendon from my leg, the MCL healed itself and the Meniscus had to be removed. This was in 1988, so maybe surgical techniques have improved, but it took me 9 mos. to recover and that was typical back then.

Since you can walk on it that's a good sign that you don't need surgery.

i have a bucket handle meniscus tear, but it only bothers me when i squat with full weight on it or bend the knee past 90 degrees with full weight on it....then it locks and i have to sit on the ground and flex and massage it until i can work the tear loose from the joint....

it only happens once in a blue moon, but, otherwise i`m fine...

had a couple arthroscopies to clean up some junk, but they were no problem at all...

i`ve heard that sometimes they have to remove the stuff that keeps the knee lubricated and protected and that arthritis and knee replacement are just a matter of time after that..

not sure thats true....

i`m leaving mine alone until it locks and i can`t unlock it...

best of luck...i`m always reticent about getting cut without absolutely having to get cut..

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
J97,

I had it done 15 years ago, and I run and play a number of different sports w/o a brace. Big question is, what are you planning to do regarding that, and what type of work do you do?
Let me tell you, it's NO picnic:( I worked extremely hard to get mine back, and it took me two surgeries(I had a fray that kept tearing during rehab  ) to get it right. Never hurts to get that 2nd opinion. Good Luck with that...

This topic reminds me to ask this question. I've never went to a doctor and had it checked out, but I've had a problem in my knee for about a year and a half now.

My left knee locks up every once in awhile when playing basketball and it feels like a pop. I get an instant burning sensation and my leg will not straighten out no matter what. I'll take a few pain killers and wake up the next day and it'll be back to normal.

Now, sometimes when I move my left knee suddenly, like getting out of bed, or if I'm at work and reach to grab something off the ground and it involves stretching in weird angles, it'll act like it's about to pop but a co-worker of mine told me what to do if it locks up. I have to pull my leg and hold it parallel to the ground and then straighten it out.

What in the world could it possibly be?

Sorry to hack your thread, but the ACL topic got me interested to know if one of my Ligaments might be damaged.

VERY SERIOUS

VERY SERIOUS

Let me educate you........

I am 39 year old male.

I played sports in highschool none beyond.

My knee used to LOCK UP if I crouched down.

I had it scoped in 2002 and my meniscus cleaned up. The MRI showed my ACL torn too.

I figured if I could get away with my knee not locking after the meniscus clean up I was good.

After the surgeon went in and clean up my knee when I awoke he said you have maybe 25% left of your ACL its torn badly we should schedule you for a reconstruction.

I said WOA Doc the rehab is MASSIVE and if you use a cadaver it might not take but then you have graft one from me.......I need to rethink this.

I called the WORLD RENOWNED surgeon who was responsible for Willis Mcgahee complete knee reconstruction among many HUGE athletes.

LOOK HIM UP : JOHN URIBE the Canes team surgeon.

I brought him all of my films and reports.

HE SAID AND I QUOTE :

" Do you play professional sports ? Do you rely on running and cutting ? To which I reply no...Do you have pain I say on and off more its sore sometimes. He says on a 10 scale ? I say 5 sometimes 6. He said well the surgery and rehab is a 10. Come back and see me if you ever lose complete use of it and then and then ONLY do we need to do this surgery. So here I am 6 years later running with my 2 kids when I need to....Being careful of what I do.

DONT DO IT !

J97,

and what type of work do you do?

Franky

I am in the Recovery business.

I own a Repo Agency here in Oklahoma City.

Right now business in unbelievable and going down would not be good.

Anyway, got a second opinion today, and the doctor said tear is not as bad as I think.

He referred me to a great rehab specailist here in the city and I am going to start next week.

He said that with they type of tear that it is rehab can get it fixed.

Hope he is right.......I don't think it will be 100% but right now it is the thing to do.

Thanks for the responses

I wouldn't be in any hurry for surgery either if it's not completely gone.

Try to avoid things that you'll learn irritate it. Physical Therapy sucks, but it will suck a lot more after an ACL construstion! The athletes we always hear about having this surgery and getting back to normal do almost nothing but rehab to get better. The average guy like you or me has a hard time getting in an hour a day much less all the copays for PT and more if you have a personal trainer as well doing whirlpool, pool therapy, etc. etc. Work hard, and hopefully you'll have good results!

in a weird way,it`s sort of comforting to hear that this bucket handle meniscus tear i have isn`t all that uncommon......and that others are also hesitant to go under the knife for a condition that isn`t really all that debilitating(at least in my case)....

glad i read this thread...

That sounds like torn cartlage. It might be a cyst that keeps popping out. Same thing happened to me.
