Phillip Fulmer, who a decade ago brought Tennessee its first national championship in 47 years, will not return as the Volunteers' coach next year, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

An announcement is being planned for later Monday at Neyland Stadium. Fulmer, who has won 150 games at his alma mater and is the dean of SEC coaches, met with Tennessee officials Monday morning, and they reached a mutual agreement that it would be best for all parties if Fulmer did not return next season.

The sides also agreed that Fulmer would coach the remainder of the 2008 season.

The Vols (3-6, 1-5 SEC) have lost four straight games and are in danger of posting their second losing season in the last four years.

"Anybody that likes Tennessee and cares about what the product looks like on the field is frustrated," Fulmer said Sunday night, according to The Tennessean.

In the story posted on the Nashville newspaper's Web site, Fulmer told his coaches in a Sunday meeting to shield the players from their frustration.

"It's about our energy, the looks in our eyes, our demeanor and how we approach it in meetings and film sessions," Fulmer said about his coaching staff, according to the Tennessean. "We're professionals and we have and we will continue to be looking forward to playing."

There had been increasing scrutiny on Fulmer, who took over full time as head coach in 1993 and has been at his alma mater as a player, assistant coach and head coach for more than 30 years.

The Vols won the national title in 1998 and were one of the top programs in all of college football in the 1990s, but the program hasn't been the same this decade. They've lost 31 games since the end of the 2001 season.

thanks brent...

call me a softie..but i feel sorry for the guy....

As much as I can't stand the SOB, you hate when someone loses their job. This guy played college football there, was an assistant under Johnny Majors there (until he stabbed him in the back) and has been the HC for almost 15 years. He has spent over 30 years of his life as a UT Volunteer.

I know it's tough for him and his family, but he's going to get a nice fat settlement check.

I can't believe I actually sound like I feel sorry for the poor slob. LOL

Say what you will, but Fulmer is a very respectable guy. UT is probably my most hated squad and Fulmer is an awful in-game coach. But as a person, he does as much or more than any other coach in the country for his community, school, and state.

It was his time to go, and I am glad they have made this decision.

I feel this is very similar to when Tubby was dismissed at Kentucky. Good guy; just not getting it done as a coach.

Here is a take on the situation as a UT Fan:

I am 33 years old and was raised as a UT fan in rural west Tennessee. I grew up on a farm and my father went to UT and was friends with Coach Johnny Majors. Therefore, I spent every Saturday with my dad listening to, in my opinion, the greatest play by play voice in the history of sports, John Ward. ("It's football time, in Tennessee!")

I always had a bad taste in my mouth when it came to fat boy because the way he stabbed Coach Majors in the back. For those who don't remember the situation, it was poor and Fulmer tried to act like he had nothing to do with it.

This guy was NEVER a big game coach, but he could somehow recruit. I will never figure out, with his personality, how he was able to get big time recruits.

To sum up, good riddance fat ass, karma is a bitch and I have no sympathy for him at all. We will see if he acts with class and dignity or if he acts like a bitch.

Guys I would like to see:
1. Brian Kelly - hands down would talk with this guy before I talked with anyone else.
2. Bill Cowher - worth a shot IMO and would be a great college football coach. With his personality and passion, he would be beloved here in KNoxville.

Others that will be mentioned:
Jon Gruden - ties to UT, but for some reason, he doesn't get me excited?

Brewster at Minny - after the NW debacle that cost me money, not much interest. He needs to show me more

Will Muschamp - don't like someone who has not been a HC

Butch Davis - think he has way too much of a good thing at UNC. I wouldn't leave when you could run away with the ACC in a couple years. Too tough for him here

Fulmer was the O-Line coach under Majors. He replaced Majors in the middle of the '92 season when Majors had heart surgery. Fulmer won a couple games and then Majors returned and lost 3 straight, was fired and replaced by Fulmer.

Earlier this year in an interview with the Chattanooga Times Free-Press Majors was asked about his last season at UT. He responded, "You mean the season of my ignominious demise? The season when, while I was recovering from my heart surgery, a few people whom I won?t name were operating on my back?"

Just a few weeks ago, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel, Majors told Birmingham radio host Paul Finebaum that originally hiring Fulmer was "one of the main mistakes I made in my coaching career."

Scott - Kelly is the coach of Cincinatti. The reason many like him, including me. is because he has won everywhere he's been. He won a couple of Division II titles at Grand Valley St., then went to Central Michigan and took that program to the top of the MAC. He also recruited Lefevour there.

He had Cincy winning with a 3rd string QB for goodness sake. I am a big believer in coaches who have won at different levels and different places, ie Urban Meyer at BG and Utah before going to FLA. Leetch doesnt excite me very much either. He is doing a great job there, but don't think he would do that well in the SEC

I don't want to see a first time coach here, thats for sure, but anything is better than Fulmer!

Of course it's sad when things change. That is what UT needs though because things have become stagnant and predictable. Won't be the same without Fulmer but could be alot better. Who knows?

If it's Cowher, holy shit! Add that name to the already very talented coaching pool inside the SEC.

I say this knowing that rumors go rampant and "sources" are often full of sh*t.

Having said this, the head of a major corporation based here in Knoxville, Pilot Travel Centers, LLC, and a VERY large voice as to who is coaching at UT was playing golf with Bill Cowher this past week.

Could be mere coincidence or it could have been from a charity function, but nonetheless worthy of being noted

I hope the Cowher talk is all rumor. Would like to see Mike Leach or Chris Petersen though.

Tubby is way better than Croom... A five year old taking a nap has better decision making skills than Croom.
