Not sure on those but I would think if the surface is a different than their actual "home" field then it would not be as helpful. Just my opinion.

~3 hours from Central but there are plenty of Central alums in the Detroit area. It will not be full but of the 30-40K that show up 99% will be CMU. Definite advantage for the Chips, especially since they have played at Ford Field 5 times in the last three years (4-1 SU and ATS).

Going down your list:

Hawaii (nuff said)

S.Fla (plays in Tampa, about 15-20 miles away)

C. Mich (plays in Mt Pleasant, about 3 hrs away from Detroit)

NC (plays in Chapel Hill, 3 to 3.5 hrs away, depends on traffic)

FSU (plays in Tallahassee, which is more towards the panhandle, probably 250 miles to Orlando)

Cal (plays in Berkeley, 15-20 miles away)

LT (plays in Ruston, 50 miles away)

Rice (plays in Houston)

Vandy (plays in Nashville)

GT (plays in Atlanta)

USC (plays in LA)

TT (plays in Lubbock, about 250 miles away from Dallas)

FL (plays in Gainesville, which is a pretty good drive from Miami but you're right, it's still in FL)

could this perhaps be an unusual angle this year. are there more homefield advantages in more bowl games than usual due to the economy?

Nevada plays at this field every other year and will have the home crowd due to conference affilation.
My records go back to 1996 and Maryland hasn't been to the Blue Carpet.

S. Florida plays at Raymond James Stadium (Home of the Bucs)

This is across the Bay, roughly 20 miles...

Florida U is in Gainesville, a 120 mile drive north of Tampa on 75N. In no way do they have an advantage playing in Miami outside of it being home state... Weather shouldn't be a factor as well... 340 miles from Gainesville to Miami...
