Tony Dungy figures that running back Joseph Addai and strong safety Bob Sanders will be good to go Thursday night against the Jaguars.

Both Addai (shoulder) and Sanders (knee) were held out of the Colts? 31-21 win over the Lions on Sunday. Neither practiced much in the week prior to the Detroit game, but Dungy and his coaching staff figured that additional rest would do both of them a world of good.

?Probably both of those guys would have been doubtful to play two games in five days,? Dungy said Sunday in the wake of the win over the Lions. ?We thought the prudent thing was to rest them up. I think they should be ready to go.?

He reiterated that thought a day later, adding that he would have liked to have been able to substitute more during the Detroit game and give more of his starters a chance for additional rest heading into this week?s meeting with the Jaguars.

?But that didn?t materialize, so it was pretty much like a normal game,? the Colts coach said.

Should Indianapolis win at Jacksonville, the Colts would clinch a spot in the AFC playoffs. A loss, though, would make things a lot more interesting.

?The Thursday night games, you don?t have as much traction and energy as you would on a Sunday when you have the extra three days,? Dungy said. ?Our veteran guys talk to the rookies in the locker room about resting up. But you?ve got to force yourself to get that extra rest.

? LB Tyjuan Hagler (knee) may be cleared to practice Tuesday. If he receives clearance from team medical personnel, Hagler has a chance to play Thursday night at Jacksonville.

? DT Eric Foster (neck/burner) has not been placed on the Colts? injured reserve list, contrary to Internet reports over the weekend. Foster should practice this week and has a good chance of playing at Jacksonville on Thursday night.

? DT Keyunta Dawson (hamstring) practiced Friday but was held out of the Lions game. It remains to be seen whether he will be given the green light to play at Jacksonville, but Dawson is expected to see some practice time this week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)?Jaguars receiver Jerry Porter made nearly $1 million a catch this season before going on injured reserve Tuesday.

Jacksonville placed Porter, linebacker Daryl Smith and defensive tackle Tony McDaniel on injured reserve, ending their seasons.

Porter finished with 11 receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown, far below expectations when the franchise signed him to a six-year, $30 million contract in March that included $10 million guaranteed. Porter missed all of training camp, the preseason and the first three games because of a hamstring injury.

He started six games, but didn?t catch more than two passes in any game. It?s unlikely the 30-year-old Porter will return next season.

Without Smith the final two games, team captain Mike Peterson will return to the starting lineup Thursday night against Indianapolis.

The Jaguars also signed defensive back Calvin Lowry and guard Cameron Stephenson.

Series History:

16th meeting. The Colts lead the series, 11-4.

Indianapolis has posted wins in six of the last nine meetings.

The Colts and Jaguars have split their home-and-home season series in 2003, 2004 and 2006.

Indianapolis swept the series a year ago.

The Colts are 5-2 at Jacksonville, including last season?s 29-7 decision (Oct. 22, 2007). QB Peyton Manning completed 23 of 37 passes for 259 yards and one touchdown. He was also intercepted once and was sacked twice. WR Reggie Wayne caught nine passes for 131 yards, and RB Joseph Addai rushed 16 times for 85 yards. DE Dwight Freeney recorded two sacks against the Jaguars. He also got a safety when he tackled former Jacksonville quarterback Quinn Gray in the end zone.

Inside Slant

Running back Joseph Addai and strong safety Bob Sanders are expected to be game-time decisions for the Indianapolis Colts heading into Thursday night?s nationally televised game with Jacksonville.

Wide receiver Marvin Harrison, meanwhile, is considered questionable for the Jaguars game with a hamstring injury.

Addai has been nursing a sore shoulder, which he injured two weeks ago against Cincinnati. He did not play last week against Detroit.

Sanders, who had been experienced swelling in his right knee last month, was held out of the Lions game in order to rest the knee. Harrison was apparently hurt against Detroit and did not practice on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Addai and Sanders both went through a full practice on Wednesday while Harrison did not take part in either Tuesday?s or Wednesday?s workout.

?We probably won?t know until game time (about Addai and Sanders). It?s going to be one of those things we?ll probably have to wait and see,? Colts coach Tony Dungy said before the start of Wednesday?s workout. ?Marvin actually has a hamstring issue from the (Detroit) game. He had an MRI (Wednesday) morning. And I?d say he?s questionable at this point.

?We?ll have to see where (the injury) is. We?ll get the MRI results and talk about it. And, obviously, we?re going to be cautious if there?s any issues at all, as we will with Joseph and Bob. (Addai and Sanders) have gone through what practicing we?ve done. They both want to play. They?re excited about going. My sense is they?ll (play), but we?ll see what happens in the next 36 hours.?

? In a way, the playoffs will start Thursday night for the Colts.

Even though Indianapolis will take a 10-4 record and a seven-game winning streak into the Jacksonville game, coach Tony Dungy is quite aware that his team hasn?t accomplished anything just yet.

And he knows that the Jaguars, despite a 5-9 record, would like nothing better than to knock their AFC South rivals down a peg or two. The postseason isn?t guaranteed unless Indianapolis can win this week.

?We talked about that,? Dungy said. ?It was the last thing we said (Sunday night) before we left the locker room. Our magic number is one, and we can?t count on anybody else to lose. So we have to get a win. That?s the way to get yourselves in (to the playoffs). And that?s the way we?ve got to look at it, as if it?s a must-win game because a win puts you in the playoffs, and we?re not in yet.

?I?m sure (the Jaguars) would like to knock us out. We haven?t really been in that situation. But when you are and you can?t get in, that?s the motivation. Especially if it?s a division rival. I?m sure they would like to keep us out of the playoffs. I?m sure we?ll get their best.?

With a win over Jacksonville, Indianapolis would clinch the No. 5 spot in the AFC playoffs. A loss would have the Colts fighting for their postseason lives a week later against AFC South champion Tennessee in the regular-season finale.

Indianapolis dropped a 23-21 decision to the Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 21 thanks to Josh Scobee?s 51-yard field goal with four seconds remaining. Jacksonville has always played the Colts tough, and Thursday night?s game is not expected to be an exception.

?That?s going to be our focus to the players. We win this game, that will put us at the (number) five spot. And nothing ? the following week would (change). We can?t get to four and we couldn?t drop to six. So if that happens, then we?ll play (the Tennessee game) like we?ve played all those games in that situation,? Dungy said.

?We?ll rest the guys (against the Titans) that need rest and we?ll play the guys that need to play. If we don?t win this week, then next week becomes a must win, and that?s how we?ll approach it. So we?re looking at (the Jacksonville game) as being like a playoff game for us, getting ourselves in.?

The Colts could lose to Jacksonville and still clinch a playoff spot this week, but several things would have to happen first. Should three of the following four teams lose?Jets, Patriots, Dolphins and Ravens?Indianapolis moves on to the postseason.

?Obviously we?re all real happy (to have a seven-game winning streak), but it doesn?t mean a whole lot at this point. We want to get to the playoffs,? center Jeff Saturday said. ?I?d take a four-game streak (in the postseason) and be just as happy.?

Should Indianapolis win this week, the Colts would become the only NFL team to have double-digit victories and playoff berths each season since the 2002 NFL realignment.

Indianapolis is the only league team to earn eight playoff appearances in the past nine seasons.

If the Colts were to advance to the playoffs this season, Dungy would set a post-NFL merger record for most consecutive playoff appearance by a head coach with 10. He is currently tied with former Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry at nine.

Inside Slant

When a small-market team has a 5-9 record, it usually doesn?t get much attention.

For example, when the Jaguars beat the Packers on Sunday, the game was viewed in only three percent of the country and in just two of the top 55 markets?Milwaukee and Jacksonville.

Now the Jaguars get a chance to play in a prime-time game for the third time this season when they host the Colts on Thursday night on the NFL Network.

?It?s a big challenge,? cornerback Brian Williams said. ?National TV, you always want to show up for that.?

Well, it?s technically on national TV, but being on the NFL Network is the NFL?s version of the Witness Protection Program.:mj07:

Locked in a legal battle with Comcast, the NFL Network hasn?t been able to get on Comcast?s basic cable package and isn?t even on some cable packages at all.

Still, it?s the only game of the night, and the highlight package will get a wide audience.

The Jaguars lost their first two prime-time games this season to the Steelers and Texans and don?t figure to get more than one prime-time game next year because of their poor record. They figure to be in a rebuilding mode in 2009.

Still, a victory over the Colts would give them a sweep of Indianapolis this year and would send a message that they could turn things around quickly.

It would also enable the Jaguars to go 3-3 in the division after finishing 2-4 the last two years. A loss would leave them at 2-4 in the division for the third consecutive year.

One player who?ll be motivated is Mike Peterson, the former Colt who is making probably the final appearance of his career in a Jaguars uniform at home.

Peterson is in the last year of his contract and probably won?t be re-signed by the team, especially after a confrontation with coach Jack Del Rio cost him his starting job earlier this year.

?The season hasn?t gone the way we wanted it to go, but I think sweeping a top team like the Indianapolis Colts would be something to hang our hat on in the offseason,? Peterson said.

Series History: 16th game. The Colts lead the series, 11-4. The Colts had won five of the last six games until the Jaguars beat them 23-21 in the third game of the season. The Jaguars won it with a 51-yard field goal by Josh Scobee with four seconds remaining after the Colts took a 21-20 lead with 1:07 left when Peyton Manning directed a seven-play, 80-yard drive. The Jaguars gashed them with their running game as Fred Taylor, who?s now on injured reserve, ran for 121 yards and Maurice Jones-Drew added 107.

Notes, Quotes

? The Jaguars placed three players on the injured reserve list Tuesday. LB Daryl Smith, WR Jerry Porter and DT Tony McDaniel will miss the final two games. Smith and Porter have groin injuries, and McDaniel has a toe injury.

Porter got $10 million in guaranteed money before the season, and he wound up playing 10 games and catching just 11 passes.

Jacksonville signed DB Calvin Lowry and G Cameron Stephenson to boost the roster to 52 players. The Jaguars still have one roster opening.

Stephenson was signed off the Saints? practice squad, while Lowry had been waived by the Broncos last week. Lowry started three of 11 games with Denver after being claimed off the waiver wire from Tennessee.

? David Garrard has turned the quarterback draw into a major weapon for the Jaguars.

He burned the Packers twice Sunday in the fourth quarter with the draw.

With the Jaguars trailing 13-7, he ran the draw on fourth-and-1 at the Green Bay 32 for 4 yards and a first down, and the Jaguars went on to score a touchdown to take a 14-13 lead.

When the Jaguars fell behind 16-14, he ran for 14 yards on third-and-4 at the Green Bay 18. He fumbled at the Green Bay 2, but then recovered his own fumble.

When Garrard was asked if he?s surprised that defenses don?t look for the quarterback draw in those situations when he?s in the shotgun late in the game, he said, ?It?s just a great play. When you have a quarterback that is 238 pounds or so and you only need 1 yard, unless it?s a stalemate, I should be able to stumble forward for a yard. They should expect that play, but usually we spread people out, so there?s still not enough guys in the box and I?m bigger than most of the linebackers so I should be able to generate enough inertia to fall forward.?

The quarterback draw has become a signature play for Garrard, who ran it on fourth down in Pittsburgh last January to set up the game-winning field goal. The Jaguars were holding on the play, but the officials missed it.

? The Jaguars may have finally solved their problem of getting off to slow starts.

After misfiring on their first series the last three games, they finally got in synch on their first drive of the game after the Packers won the toss and elected to defer until the second half.

The Jaguars got a first down on their first play when David Garrard threw a 13-yard pass to Reggie Williams, and that started a 12-play, 73-yard touchdown drive. That started them off toward a 20-16 victory.

In the previous three games, Jacksonville failed to get a first down on the first series and turned the ball over on two of them.

? Dennis Norman, who started the season at center but was switched to right guard the last six games after Brad Meester returned to the lineup, was called for two penalties that cost the Jaguars 25 yards.

The first one was a holding penalty on the first drive that set up a first-and-20 on the Green Bay 31. The Jaguars overcame that when Dennis Northcutt caught a 30-yard touchdown pass three plays later.

But when he got a 15-yard personal-foul penalty in the third period for a clipping penalty, it killed the drive.

He needs to step up his game against the Colts.

? K Josh Scobee has hit a bump in the road after making 11 of his first 12 and 15 of his 17 field-goal attempts.

His 51-yard attempt that hit the left upright in the second quarter against Green Bay was his fourth miss in his last seven attempts.

? RB Maurice Jones-Drew has a shot at a big game running the ball against the Colts, who have trouble stopping the run.

Jones-Drew ran for 107 yards in the first game against the Colts and could have a bigger game now that he?s playing full time because Fred Taylor is on injured reserve.

But don?t tell him he has to prove he can carry the load on a full-time basis.

?I don?t think it?s a chance to prove anything,? he said. ?I go out there and play football and have fun. In college, I was out there all the time. High school (was the same).?

He said he only became a change-of-pace backup runner when he got to the Jaguars.

?It?s still football. I do the same things I did in college. I don?t think people who say those things understand football,? he said.

The NFL is different, but Jones-Drew doesn?t believe that.

By The Numbers: 3-3?A victory Thursday would give the Jaguars a 3-3 division record after they went 2-4 the two previous seasons. A loss would give them their third consecutive 2-4 mark.

Quote To Note: ?When we wake up (Monday), it?s really Wednesday in terms of our game week preparation. So it?ll be a quick week and we?ll get on to the Colts for Thursday night.??Coach Jack Del Rio, on the short week of preparation for Thursday night.

Strategy And Personnel

The Jaguars are still making changes in their lineup even though they have nothing left to play for. And two of the changes are raising some eyebrows. Dennis Northcutt is back in the starting lineup because Matt Jones is serving a drug suspension and Jerry Porter is out with a groin injury. Northcutt gave the Jags a deep passing game they haven?t had all season, as he caught five passes for 127 yards Sunday.

But his showing raised questions about why coach Jack Del Rio buried him on the depth chart all year. Apparently, he was upset about Northcutt dropping a pass in the playoffs, and Del Rio is a coach who holds a grudge.

Del Rio called the passing game ?inept? in Chicago, and Northcutt definitely gave it a spark against Green Bay.

Mike Peterson is back starting at middle linebacker because Daryl Smith is out with a groin injury. Peterson lost his starting job after he irritated Del Rio by explaining why he celebrated a sack while the team trailed 21-3 in Cincinnati. Peterson was tossed out of a meeting room and was inactive for the Detroit game, then turned into a special teams player and backup.

But if the idea was to motivate the team, it failed, as the Jaguars lost their next four games. And after Smith was injured, Peterson was on the field in the final quarter when the defense stopped the Packers.

Player Notes:

? WR Dennis Northcutt will try to have another big game against the Colts after he caught five passes for 127 yards against the Packers.

? RB Maurice Jones-Drew, making his second consecutive start now that Fred Taylor is on injured reserve, will attempt to put up big numbers against a porous Colts defense. He ran for 107 yards against the Colts in the first game.

? MLB Mike Peterson is expected to return to the starting lineup because of Daryl Smith?s groin injury. Peterson was a backup and special teams player the last four games because of a confrontation with coach Jack Del Rio.

? QB David Garrard will try to have his second big game in five days against the Colts. He had a 105.4 passer rating against the Packers with two touchdown passes and no interceptions.

? S Reggie Nelson made a game-saving interception against the Packers in the fourth quarter, but he could be targeted deep by Peyton Manning and the Colts receivers.

Game Plan: The Jaguars showed they could run against the Colts when Fred Taylor had 121 yards and Maurice Jones-Drew 107. Although Bob Sanders is expected to return to bolster the run game, the Jaguars are going to run until the Colts show they can stop it. They need to control the ball and keep the Indianapolis offense off the field, especially with CB Rashean Mathis out.

Last year, the Colts threw 14 times at Reggie Wayne when Brian Williams was covering him, and he caught all 14 passes. Williams played safety in the first Colts game this year but now is back at safety. Although the Colts claim they just try to get their receivers one-on-one against the opposing defensive backs regardless of which defenders they are, they may want to check out Williams.

Matchups To Watch: Jaguars CBs Brian Williams and Drayton Florence vs. Colts WRs Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison. With Rashean Mathis out, the Jaguars likely will be vulnerable in the secondary. Williams had problems covering Wayne last year, but played safety in the first game this year. Now he?s back at corner, and the Colts may target him.

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew vs. Colts? front seven and S Bob Sanders. Sanders, who means a lot to Indianapolis? rush defense, missed the first game. He?s expected to be back, and the Colts hope he can help slow down Jones-Drew, who?s now a full-time back with Sanders sidelined.

Injury Impact: LB Daryl Smith is out, but his absence isn?t likely to make much difference because the Jaguars have Mike Peterson ready to step into that role.

Gameday rail: Jaguars vs. Colts

AT STAKE

The Jaguars are out of postseason contention but could sweep the Colts with a victory tonight. For Indianapolis, a victory would secure the club's ninth playoff berth in 10 seasons, including seven in a row.

MATCHUP

Drayton Florence vs. Reggie Wayne: ,br>Florence struggled early in the season with injuries and appeared to lose confidence. But he's playing better, especially the past two games. Florence will likely receive plenty of help over the top against Wayne, who will not have teammate Marvin Harrison.

==================

One final spotlight for the Jaguars
Jags, Peterson not without motivation in home finale

The Jaguars hope to show tonight they're still prime-time players.

After losing their other two prime-time games this year to the Steelers and Texans, the Jaguars close out their home season tonight against the Indianapolis Colts on the NFL Network. The game is also being shown locally on WAWS TV-30.

This is a chance for the Jaguars to salvage something out of a disappointing 5-9 season by sweeping a division rival, snapping the Colts' seven-game winning streak and preventing them from clinching a playoff spot.

"It's a big challenge,'' said cornerback Brian Williams. "National TV, you always want to show up for that.''

It's technically on national TV, but the NFL Network, locked in a legal battle with the cable companies over access to basic cable, has yet to match the wide audience that ESPN has. Still, the game is one the Jaguars appear to be anticipating.

"Our guys are excited about the opportunity,'' coach Jack Del Rio said. "It should be a fun game.''

The game also has an intriguing number of subplots for a team that is out of the race.

To start with, two players who were nearly forgotten, middle linebacker Mike Peterson and wide receiver Dennis Northcutt have been thrust back into the spotlight.

Peterson lost his starting job when he tried to explain to Del Rio why he celebrated a sack in Cincinnati when the Jaguars were trailing, 21-3.

He was subsequently tossed out of a meeting, placed on the inactive list for the game at Detroit, and then brought him back as a backup and special teams player. Peterson will make his first start since his demotion because Daryl Smith was placed on injured reserve earlier this week with a groin injury.

Del Rio said he had no regrets about the Peterson move and this is likely to be Peterson's last home game as a Jaguar. Peterson has special motivation because the Colts let him leave in free agency after the 2002 season.

"Our season hasn't gone the way we wanted it to. I think sweeping a team like the Indianapolis Colts is something we can hang our hats on in the offseason,'' Peterson said.

Northcutt moved into the starting lineup against Green Bay for the first time this season because of Matt Jones' drug suspension and Jerry Porter's groin injury, and gave the Jaguars the deep passing game they haven't had. He caught five passes for 127 yards.

Now he gets his chance to do it again against the Colts, though Del Rio still seems committed to Jones.

When asked if Northcutt isn't a better weapon than Jones, a possession receiver who caught 65 passes, but only two for 30 yards or more, Del Rio said: "I would not make that kind of statement. I think Matt is a good football player. We'll get him back next year.''

The game is likely to turn on whether the Jaguars' secondary, missing injured Rashean Mathis, can stop the Peyton Manning's passing game and whether the Colts' run defense can stop Maurice Drew, who has three of his seven career 100-yard rushing games against Indianapolis.

Drew, though, doesn't feel he has to demonstrate he can be a full-time running back now that Fred Taylor is on injured reserve. He said he had that role his entire career until he was drafted by the Jaguars and started splitting time with Taylor.

"I don't think it's a chance to prove anything,'' Drew said. "It's still football. I do the same things I did in college. I don't think people who say those things [that he hasn't proved he can be a full-time back] understand football.''

It is being reported here that Richard Collier the former offensive lineman for the Jags that was shot 14 times and lost part of part of his leg to complications and is paralyzed is going to make a on field visit to the game tonight. He was very well liked person on the team. If this is true it is going to be a very emotional night for the Jags. Whether it effects the teams play who knows but I do know emotions will be very high.

League: 16-3-1 (Av. win 12.7) away Div 3+ fav, off an ats loss as a 7+ fav with 32+ mins TOP, if opp had <30 mins TOP. [Indi]
8-0-1 (Av. win 18.1!) if they were 10+ favs.

So, not reading too much into last weeks scores...
...Indi controlled the game, did what they had to.
Jags got out gained and out-possessed last week by a 5-8 team, who were 2-4 and allowing over 28 ppg on the road.
Forget motivation...just better team ;)
