Report: Tom Brady?s rehab well behind schedule

By Karen Guregian / Patriots Notebook | Monday, December 29, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | N.E. Patriots

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Injured Patriots [team stats] quarterback Tom Brady [stats] remains ?well behind schedule? in his recovery from surgery on the torn ACL and MCL in his left knee, according to a report yesterday on NBCSports.com.

Although the staph infection that enveloped Brady?s knee post-surgery apparently is clear following a six-week course of IV-antibiotics, the report stated that his ACL and MCL are still ?loose.? There?s also scar tissue that is limiting mobility, as reported previously by the Herald.

The Patriots training staff has been working to increase mobility. Should that continue to be an issue, the scar tissue may have to be surgically removed.

The greater concern, according to the report, is the looseness of the ligaments, which may force surgery and keep Brady sidelined in 2009, as well.

Or, Brady could go through next season wearing a heavy brace, only that would make him more susceptible to blowing out the knee again, according to a source in the report.

Brady tore both ligaments in the season opener against Kansas City on Sept. 7. On Oct. 6, he underwent tendon graph surgery performed by Los Angeles-based Dr. Neil ElAttrache.

[those damn reporters..always picking on the Pats]

they need to stop this schyt..it ain't fair]

MATT CASSEL AGENT MUST OF LEAKED THE RUMOR:mj07:

FOXBORO - Are you ready for some football drama?

If so, keep an eye on your New England Patriots [team stats] during their now-active postseason.

What we have here is a case of dueling news stories involving the health of quarterback Tom Brady [stats]. It began with former Pats beat reporter Tom Curran, now in the employ of NBCSports.com, writing that Brady?s recovery from his season-ending left knee injury is ?well behind schedule,? this because of an infection that set in following the surgery, and that an additional surgery could jeopardize Brady?s 2009 season.

And then Peter King, reporting for NBC?s ?Football Night in America,? put it out there that his sources tell him Brady is actually ahead of schedule. King then added some intrigue to the dispute by noting that his sources wouldn?t be surprised if ?. . . the Patriots might be placing a story that could end up getting them more for Matt Cassel in the offseason when he becomes a free agent.?

What are we to make of this? Let?s begin with the fact that Curran and King are seasoned, well-traveled NFL reporters whose credentials are very much in order. They didn?t dredge this stuff up to bring some pizzazz to an otherwise slow news day. This being the last day of the regular season, with all kinds of postseason scenarios being played out, it?s not like either outlet was screaming for a Tom Brady angle to add some spice to the proceedings.

It boils down to this: Curran heard one story from well-placed people, and King heard another story from a different set of well-placed people.

Were it not for the case that it?s the New England Patriots [team stats] and Tom Brady we are talking about, that would be the end of it. But here?s where it gets complicated:

If Curran?s information is correct, it?s possible the Pats could lose Brady for the 2009 season.

If King?s story is correct, it?s possible the Patriots are spreading misinformation about the most important, most heralded player in the history of the franchise in order to help set the market for Brady?s 2008 replacement, the surprising Matt Cassel.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who held a 2008 postmortem with the media yesterday morning at Gillette Stadium, was in remarkably good spirits for a man whose team just went 11-5 yet failed to qualify for the playoffs.

But when asked about Brady, the coach was predictably vague.

?We spent all week getting ready for Buffalo,? he said. ?And we?re bringing that to a closure today. All the other things, as relates to players, decisions, roster, so forth, schemes, all that, are things we?ll deal with in due course. I haven?t thought about (Brady?s health), and I don?t know any more than I knew yesterday. Those things will all come in time.?

Given these dueling stories about Brady, has the coach considered speaking to his quarterback to make sure everyone?s on the same page?

His response was to point out he sees Brady all the time, he talks with doctors and trainers, adding, ?I don?t need to read a report and see what somebody else has to say.?

Know this about Brady: In addition to being the man who quarterbacked the Patriots to three Super Bowl championships in four seasons and who has led his team to the playoffs six times in seven seasons, including a loss to the Colts in the 2006 AFC Championship Game and, of course, a loss to the Giants in last season?s Super Bowl, he also happens to be the ultimate team player.

We know this to be true because that?s what the Patriots have always told us. Brady used to get the cool parking space because he was the first player to be show up in the workout room and the last to leave it. He is an A student when it comes to the team playbook, his homework always handed in on time. He is a locker room leader.

What does it mean, then, if it turns out the two camps - the Patriots [team stats] and Brady - are parceling out different versions of the quarterback?s health status? It?s OK for Pats fans to admire and respect Tom Brady [stats], just as it?s OK for them to admire and respect the entire Patriots player personnel team, including Scott Pioli and Belichick.

But while nobody?s asking you to take sides, be advised that we have two stories being submitted, and that the two stories, placed side by side, do not add up.

Current Interview W/Brady concerning knee.

Current Interview W/Brady concerning knee.

Tom Brady says all?s ?well?
Mum on ?09 status

Tom Brady?s first exclusive interview since blowing out his knee in September was short on revelations.

Speaking yesterday to Toronto all-sports radio station The Fan 590 to shill a sports cream, Brady shed a sliver of light on the injury and the state of his rehab.

?It?s going really well,? he said after a slight pause. ?Anyone who?s come back from injuries that require surgery knows it?s just a process. There are some good days and some bad days. You keep plugging through. That?s life.

?You?ve just got to focus your energy and attention on the positive things you can gain. It tests you in a lot of ways. I?m excited about the process and the work.?

Asked to describe his reaction to being injured in the opener, Brady offered the equivalent of a shrug.

?You play this game long enough and (expletive) happens,? Brady said. ?That?s the reality. It happens to everybody. I?m in a new part of my career, a different process, and I?m excited about rehab and those different challenges. The tough part is you?re not experiencing something you love to do, but you get over that and focus on, ?OK, it?s happened, we?re moving on.? ?

Brady noted he has not been doing it alone.

?So many wonderful people have helped me,? he said. ?I?m the most well taken care of knee patient in history.?

Beyond an appearance at the team?s Salvation Army Christmas Party, Brady has not granted an extensive interview about the injury or his rehab. He was not asked yesterday if he?d be ready for training camp, nor was he asked to address specific reports that his rehab has been delayed by an infection and an accumulation of scar tissue that could require another surgery.

He was asked about the inauguration of Barack Obama, his 2007 trip to Africa, the possibility of doing more work in Africa if asked by the president, the surprising success of the Arizona Cardinals, and whether he ices his arm.

Brady on target
QB is throwing, and he's on track for 2009 opener

By Christopher L. Gasper and Shira Springer
Globe Staff / January 28, 2009

Tom Brady is progressing on pace in his rehabilitation from reconstructive left knee surgery and is now dropping back and throwing passes, according to a medical source familiar with the Patriots quarterback's case.

No additional surgical procedures are planned, according to NFL and medical sources.

Since Brady suffered a postoperative infection, there was concern that the damaged knee would require more surgery to deal with the buildup of scar tissue and other possible complications that could prevent him from being ready for the 2009 season.

The medical source said Brady is "on track to be fine for the opening game of the season.

"Based on anybody else doing an ACL rehab, he's going right along. He had a shaky start, but he's caught up," said the source.

The source added that Brady, who suffered torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the Patriots' opener against the Chiefs Sept. 7 and had surgery to repair both ligaments Oct. 6, is throwing, running, doing his skill drills, and getting in shape.

Still, the sources acknowledged that Brady has "laxity" in the MCL and some stiffness in the joint.

Additionally, sources said Brady has not regained full range of motion, though it is not unusual for patients who have undergone ACL reconstruction to have lingering range-of-motion issues, especially in cases of infection.

An infection after Brady's surgery required at least two surgical irrigations of the area and a six-week course of antibiotics that delayed the start of his rehab.

The infection is no longer considered an issue and the rehabilitation schedule has not been significantly compromised.

As the intensity of football-related and other rehab activity increases, all indications are Brady will continue making steady progress.

NFL sources, however, caution that there remains a lot of work before the opener, with months of rigorous rehabilitation remaining.

Brady is continuing to rehab under both Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache, who performed his surgery in Los Angeles, and the Patriots medical staff. ElAttrache has flown between Los Angeles and Boston to follow up with Brady.

While the Patriots obviously want Brady, the 2007 MVP, back for the start of the 2009 season, the greater concern is how strong the knee will be when he returns, how long the knee will hold up, and how it will affect his play.

Brady, who turns 32 in August, and the Patriots likely will not have definitive answers to those questions until this summer, when the quarterback can test himself in game-like situations at training camp.

All the more reason for the Patriots to place the franchise tag on backup quarterback Matt Cassel, who proved a more than capable starter while filling in for Brady.

The Patriots can't franchise Cassel, preventing the QB from becoming an unrestricted free agent, until Feb. 5.

Still, the latest reports on Brady's knee seem more encouraging than a month ago, when an NBCSports.com report said both the ACL and MCL were loose and a second reconstructive surgery would be required to repair the problem.
