The Oklahoma Sooners are understandably tired about hearing about how Big 12 defenses don't measure up to the vaunted Southeastern Conference. What gets overlooked: The Sooners' No. 98-ranked pass defense faced the top three quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends in the country in their league, according to Franks.

Franks said Florida quarterback Tim Tebow would "probably be about the fourth-best quarterback in our conference" behind Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Texas' Colt McCoy and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell. He added that as a defensive back, preparing for Tebow's physical running style and 20 passing attempts a game is easier than facing a Big 12 quarterback who throws "40 or 50 times."

Franks is miffed because he believes Tebow insulted Big 12 defenses in comments to television analysts. In the final moments of their broadcast of the SEC title game, CBS' Verne Lundquist said Tebow discussed his Heisman vote with Lundquist and analyst Gary Danielson.

According to Lundquist, Tebow, not known for controversial comments, mentioned he had a lot of respect for the Big 12 quarterbacks, but "then he looked at us with a huge grin and he said, 'I really would like to throw against some of those defenses in the Big 12.' "

Six Oklahoma receivers had at least 395 yards, and four totaled more than 600. Bradford's favorite targets were Juaquin Iglesias (1,092 yards, 10 touchdowns), Jermaine Gresham (888, 12), Manuel Johnson (685, 9, 18.0-yard per-catch average) and Ryan Broyles (661, 6 TDs).

The Sooners are anything but one-dimensional offensively, as they also featured a versatile and prolific running attack this season, although that running game suffered a major loss in mid-December.

Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray each rushed for more than 1,000 yards, but the sophomore Murray won't play Jan. 8 because of a ruptured hamstring. Murray ran for 1,002 yards and 14 touchdowns, and had 395 receiving yards and four TDs.:scared

Oklahoma still has leading rusher Brown, a junior who rolled up 1,110 yards and 20 TDs on the ground, and Murray will be replaced by junior Mossis Madu, who ran for 483 yards and six scores.

Murray's injury makes the presence of Bradford all the more important. Bradford beat out Tebow, last year's Heisman winner, and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy for college football's most prestigious individual award. The accolade came on the strength of leading a team that's set NCAA records with 97 touchdowns and 702 points.

"We're ready to get back to work to get ready for (Jan.) 8th," Bradford, who underwent surgery on his non-throwing hand in early December,:SIB  said at the Heisman ceremony. "When we started this season, winning the national championship was the first goal we put down as a team."

Florida, though, may boast the best leader in the nation in the multi-threat Tebow, who this year became just the second player to repeat as Maxwell Award winner given to the most outstanding collegiate player. He put together another excellent season after struggling somewhat early on, throwing for 2,515 yards, 28 touchdowns and just two interceptions to go with a 176.7 rating -- second in the country behind Bradford. He also rushed for 682 yards and 12 TDs.

While his numbers were down somewhat from his brilliant 2007, his role as the team's emotional center was apparent during Florida's 31-20 victory over the Crimson Tide on Dec. 6. Tebow threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns, ran for a team-high 57 yards and fired up his teammates with some emotional, fist-pumping cheerleading throughout the contest.

"I've had some great players, and I've got some great players on this team," Florida coach Urban Meyer said. "But I've never had one like this. Tim's got something special inside him. I'm not talking about throwing. I'm not talking about running. I'm talking about making everyone around him better."

Tebow needed to be at his best in the SEC title game with Percy Harvin unable to go. The Florida running back, who rushed for 543 yards to go with 595 receiving yards and 16 total touchdowns this season, couldn't play because of a sprained ankle.

The Gators' depth was apparent in the game as freshman Jeff Demps ran 13 times for 53 yards and a touchdown, but Harvin is expected to be ready for Oklahoma.

Along with Tebow and Harvin, Meyer found out Dec. 16 that he'll have his offensive coordinator to call plays for them. Dan Mullen, named coach at Mississippi State on Dec. 10, plans to stay with the Gators through the championship game.

"The goal is to win the game, and I think right now, unless something changes, it looks like that's going to happen," Meyer said of Mullen being with the team Jan. 8. "Is that the best chance of us winning that game, with the mechanics of the game the way we do them? Probably yes. So right now I'd say the plan is he'll be up in the press box."

Meyer hopes his team will gain an edge from what could resemble a home crowd for Florida at Dolphin Stadium. The Gators have 13 players from the greater Miami area alone.

"I hope it's a home-field advantage," Meyer said. "I'd be disappointed if it wasn't a tremendous showing (by Gators fans), but I know Oklahoma has a great tradition of traveling fans as well. In the back of our minds, even in the front of some of our minds, this was our target to get to Miami -- because it's our home state, because of recruiting, because of all of the above."

As high-powered as the two offenses in this game are, the decisive factor could end up being Florida's defense. The speedy, opportunistic unit was fifth in the country with 12.8 points allowed per game, second with 24 interceptions and tied for eighth with 279.3 yards a contest.

Oklahoma, by contrast, gave up 24.5 points and 359.1 yards per game.

Florida's defense is led by safety Ahmad Black, who returned six interceptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns, linebacker Brandon Spikes (team-high 87 tackles, four INTs, two TDs) and defensive back Joe Haden, who returned three picks for 136 yards and made 77 tackles. Carlos Dunlap topped the Gators with nine sacks, while Jermain Cunningham added six.

"I know they're talented, I know they're fast, I see enough highlights to see all the skill and the speed," Stoops said. "But that isn't surprising."

Neither team seems likely to give the ball away much. Oklahoma committed nine turnovers all season, fewest in FBS, while Florida had 11 to tie for the second-fewest.

These teams will be meeting for the first time

I think the Heisman angle comes into play as the best QB should prevail.

Tebow will want to prove that his Heisman was more legit than Bradfords.

Not that Tebow needs much motivation. The dude is a beast of a football player.

Note- If Detroit Lions get a chance to draft Tebow #1. Please do not hesitate.

The offense gets a great deal of the attention in Gainesville, but more often than not, it was the play of the Florida defense that put the offense in position to score. The Gators ranked second in the country this season with 24 interceptions and made the biggest plays when it counted the most, ranking first in the nation with 12 interceptions against top-25 foes. That was despite having several youngsters force-fed early on. The overall numbers on the year certainly give credence to the notion that Florida has moved up to one of the nation's premier defensive teams. The Gators allowed just 279.3 yards of total offense per game, showing equal disdain for the run (105.3 ypg) and the pass (174.0 ypg). The team amassed 33 takeaways in all and also excelled at getting after opposing QBs, with 32 sacks.

Playmakers abound on this side of the football as well for Florida, starting with Brandon Spikes. The junior middle linebacker paced the team in total tackles this year (87), with 8.0 TFLs, two sacks and four interceptions. The secondary play was highlighted by sophomore DBs Joe Haden (77 tackles, three INTs, 10 PBUs) and Ahmad Black (54 tackles, six INTs) and freshman Janoris Jenkins (34 tackles, three INTs). Leading the charge along the defensive front were sophomore Carlos Dunlap (35 tackles, 12.0 TFLs, 9.0 sacks) and junior Jermaine Cunningham (51 tackles, 10.0 TFLs, 6.0 sacks).

Spikes credits the maturation of the younger players on defense for Florida's defensive tenacity this season.

"Well, I think we had a lot of younger guys just step up to the plate. They made a personal decision, and they wanted to come out and play Florida tradition defense. I think we've done that. Our off-season that was a really big part of it, younger guys kind of attack there, and we took that in and knew if we worked on it in the off-season it would pay off, and I think that's what happened this season. We've been playing good every Saturday, and stepping stones -- you know, after we got beat by Ole Miss that was the reality check for us that we were beatable and guys started doing all the smaller things, and it kind of worked out for us."

Stoops says focus is on Sooners, not NFL rumors
By Tim Griffin
ESPN.com

Report: Broncos Reach Out To Bob StoopsMIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Saturday he has not been contacted by the Denver Broncos about their head coaching position and he has no interest in the job.

"That's a rumor I haven't heard and nobody contacted me about that," Stoops said. "I don't know anything about it. I'm preparing for a national championship and that's where all my focus and concentrations are."

Stoops, 48, made his comments after his team's workout Saturday afternoon at Barry University. The Sooners will meet Florida in the FedEx BCS National Championship Game Thursday night.

Speculation on Stoops came shortly after Mike Shanahan was fired last week. Stoops had visited the Broncos training camp in 2006 where he first met with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who graduated from Oklahoma with degrees in business and law.

"Obviously, I'm not a candidate and I'm sure somebody might have told me about that other than you guys," Stoops said. "That's not something I'm concerned about whatsoever. It's a great organization but I'm not a candidate for it."

Stoops said he is not concerned about the timing of the story affecting his team's focus for Thursday's game.

"I don't know why, because there's no story," Stoops said. "This is the first I heard of it."

Several Oklahoma players mentioned earlier in the day that they had seen stories that linked their coach with the NFL job, although Stoops said he hadn't talked to them about the reports.

"I guess I have to get back and watch TV," Stoops said. "I hadn't watched [reports] and didn't realize it was something I needed to do. My guys know that there's a lot of things said about me that's not true. I guess I'll have to deal with rumors. But it won't take long."

After the Sooners victory in the 2001 Orange Bowl, Stoops was mentioned for the then-vacant Cleveland Browns' head coaching job.

Stoops left open the possibility of taking a job in the NFL, saying Saturday that coaching in the league might intrigue him some day.

"At some point in my career, that might be the case," Stoops said. "Everybody wants you to tell them what you'll do in 10 years from now. Who knows? I don't know."
.............................................................

Deny Deny Deny so as not to disrupt team .

Game over and Stoops leaves for NFL millions.

If he is going , I am sure the team has a feeling about it.

Not good for Sooners team unity IMO

On the other hand, Tim Tebow lost the 2008 Heisman race, in a very close vote, to Sooners' QB Sam Bradford. Believe me that will fire Tebow and the Gators up.

Here's what Tebow had to say about it:

I don't have to try to use it as motivation, it just is," Tebow said. "And it is for my teammates, too.

I don't see Oklahoma's defense stopping Florida much.

The Sooners have not experienced playing against a team with the kind of speed Florida has. Especially Florida?s tough, fast, physical (SEC-style) defense. Oklahoma will certainly score on the Gators; even score plenty. But, they will not be able to run up and down the field at will as they have virtually all season long against the porous defenses in the Big 12. This will be the toughest defense Oklahoma has played this year.

The other thing Oklahoma is unprepared for; indeed, they cannot prepare for is Florida?s QB, Tim Tebow. Tebow won the Heisman Trophy last season, and should win it again this year, for good reason ? he is Superman.

.................................................................

I watched several games this year where Tebow just willed Florida to victory. He was unstoppable.
I love to see that in a QB I am going to wager on for the nat championship game.
