Goaltender Steve Mason told The Dispatch today that recent blood tests -- taken earlier this week -- revealed that he no longer is infected with mononucleosis.

He will start on Friday vs. Detroit.

?I feel great now,? Mason said. ?Today is the best I?ve felt in a very long time. I?ve felt really good all week stopping pucks. I?m just glad the mono is gone. It?s really draining. Now that it?s left my body, I still have to work my energy level back up, and I think we?ve done that this week.?

One might think the Blue Jackets would easy Mason back into the groove, right? Uhh, not exactly. There's a chance he could play Saturday in Carolina.

?If Mason can play,? Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said Thursday, ?we expect him to carry the load.?

Look for the Blue Jackets to activate Mason from injured reserve at some point this afternoon, after the morning skate. They'll wait just to make sure he's OK.

At that point, it's likely the Blue Jackets will send Dan LaCosta to minor-league Syracuse.

The setup

Blue Jackets rookie goaltender Steve Mason returns after a two-game hiatus to regain his energy after a bout with mononucleosis. The Red Wings have skated Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg on the same line lately. Look for the Jackets to use both the Manny Malhotra and R.J. Umberger lines to try to keep them in check.
