Update from Friday's morning skate: The Wings recalled goaltender Jimmy Howard from Grand Rapids. Howard will back-up Ty Conklin for tonight's game against Anaheim and then make his first start of the season for Detroit Saturday in Minnesota.

Chris Osgood will not dress for at least the next two games, as the team wants to give him some time to re-focus and work on his game. Howard is expected to be sent back to Grand Rapids after Saturday's game.

"Jimmy's playing as well as he has probably at any point in his four-year (AHL) career and it's an opportunity for Chris to have 10 days to get a mental breather and clear his mind and work with (goaltending coach) Jim Bedard,'' Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "We need him to be at his best. We played him lots. When you get into bad habits early in the year, it just snowballs. My feeling is 10 days with no games, get his head cleared, work on his game and the hope is he gets back to where he was last year.''

Howard, who arrived in time for the morning skate, said he was very surprised to get the call.

"I've been playing well down there as of late,'' Howard said. "I guess it's a nice, little reward to get up here. It's always nice to get that phone call saying they want me up in Detroit.''

Howard's last game for the Wings was a 4-1 loss in Vancouver last season on Feb. 23. He is 1-4 lifetime for Detroit, posting a 2.56 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in eight appearances.

Howard got off to a slow start for the Griffins, in part due to a broken finger suffered in training camp with the Wings. But he has gotten stronger as the season has progressed. He is 15-13-4, with a 2.46 GAA and .916 save percentage.

There is one other lineup change from the last game, as Kirk Maltby goes back in for Ville Leino tonight. Coach Mike Babcock said he plans on rotating players in on the fourth line for the time being.

Wild game-day update: Backstrom starts, Brunette uncertain

The Pioneer Press's John Shipley reports that the Minnesota Wild will start Niklas Backstrom against Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard tonight:

February 21, Pioneer Press: Wild coach Jacques Lemaire said Backstrom will start in net tonight, which is the first of back-to-back games with the Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.

"I think we've got to go with our best player right now, and we'll see tomorrow, depending on how things go tonight," he said.

The Wild started today two points out of a playoff spot with 26 regular-season games remaining.

"You've got to find a way to get points, and we've got to play our best goalie and give us the best chance possible to get some points tonight," Lemaire said.

The Wild are unsure as to whether Andrew Brunette will be able to play tonight:

Brunette appeared to aggravate a knee injury in Thursday's overtime loss to Calgary and took Friday off, but he was on in this morning's pre-game skate and said he wants to play tonight against Detroit.

"I'm going to try," he said. "I have to talk to the doctors. All I can say is I'm going to try."

The Pioneer Press's Brian Stensaas confirms the news:

February 21, Pioneer Press: Forward Andrew Brunette ("lower body" injury) skated this morning at Xcel Energy Center, meaning all signs point to him being in the lineup for the 510th straight time tonight. Officially, though, he is not listed as in. Coach Jacques Lemaire said it will depend on how Brunette feels as the day goes on. Brunette declined to talk with the media, so we'll all find out together around 6:30 when the team takes its pregame warm-ups.

It was a pretty uneventful morning skate for the Wild, as they tend to be. Four players (Gillies, Olvecky, Boogaard and Weller) stayed on the ice extra today, so I really don't have a feel for who sits this one out. Of course, if Brunette doesn't go it's a whole different story.

In an uncharacteristic move, Lemaire has already stated that Niklas Backstrom will be in between the pipes tonight. He'll face off down the rink from Jimmy Howard, who will make his season debut tonight for the Red Wings. Detroit called up Howard from Grand Rapids, giving Chris Osgood a 10-day respite.

The Wings - well, seven of them at least - are on the ice now going through a light workout.
