So my blood pressure has always been fine, I have to get yearly physicals for work and my last was 5 months ago where my BP was good. Long story short, have felt weird the last couple of days and my BP has been elevated. At one point today it got to 167/106 (148/98 at Doctors office). Now I am not sure how bad that is, but for someone that has always been around the good number it worried me. I went to the doctor and she wants me to start BP meds. My question to her and any of you that may have experience in this is should I start taking these based on one doctor visit when I have a history of good BP. I am worried that if I start them and want to come off that it will do more harm. I am worried about the side effects. Most importantly I am worried that maybe I have just been under the weather which can cause your BP to rise. Having seen a friend of mine 34 years of age have a stroke about 3 weeks ago this isnt something I want to mess around with, but I would like to hear what some of you think about BP meds and BP fluctuations. 6'1 250,32,non-smoker,no family history. I know I need to lose some more weight which is one of the things that scared me. In the last 3 months I have been actively exercisin and have lost 25 pounds, but the thought of being on the treadmill with my heart pounding and high blood pressure isnt to inviting. Didnt mean to drag this out, but I really left with more questions than answers. Thanks in advance for any advice guys!

this happened to me,uga...i had a period of higher than normal bp(i check mine periodically)......pulse was slightly elevated........it threw me...i felt "off"...i was worried...

read up on some stuff....talked to the doctor...had an ekg(no change from the previous ones)..went for a stress test....was great...got to level 5....

asked the doctor about it possibly being thyroid related....that came out fine...

and it finally passed...don`t know whether it was anxiety or what.......i know i eat more salt on weekends than i should(pistachio nuts).....

you don`t take any of those energy drinks,do you?("5 hour energy" and "stackers" and that stuff?...drink alot of coffee?).....

Nope, no energy drinks or coffee. I know I need to consume less sodium and will be addressing that starting tomm. She said when I come back in a few weeks she would do all the blood work you are speaking of. Thanks GW

sounds like you have a monitor at home...if you aren`t already, keep a running log and try and check it at the same time each day...not right after a meal...or right after activity...

and when you go to see the doctor, take your machine to see how your machine measures up to the doctor`s reading...

you know, when you have something like this going on,you`re anxious to begin with...when you take your pressure, try and relax first..

i know how you feel,bro...it`s worrisome...

when mine was high the doctor put me on a half of the smallest ziac(a little diuretic and a little beta blocker) i had no real side effects(except maybe a minor prostate issue)...

but he took me off them..and i felt fine.....it works really well...other than the prostate thing,no side effects at all...you`re younger than i am,so it prolly won`t mess with your taint like it did mine......

Get some hawthorne berry from an herb or vitamin store. It will keep your bp in check naturally. It's what steroid users use to keep their bp in check because some roids cause it to stay very high.

I've read some interesting articles on how the whole "salt" blood pressure connection is largely bogus, with a few exceptions..

I am no expert but they struck me as curious.

hmmmm....hadn`t heard that...goes against an awful lot of established medical opinion....

thanks for posting,imf..gonna check it out...

Thanks for all the responses guys. It was all over the place today. one time reading 160/109 and another reading 135/85:shrug: I know it fluctuates, but this much? Anyway, I will be checking it often the next few days and charting it, I guess if it doesnt show signs of improvement I will fill my script:mad:

Going to check on the hawthorne, Thanks!

take your readings in the morning when you wake up. Use those numbers as guidline as of where you can and should be giving your current health. You will drive yourself crazy testing multiple times a day

That is the best way to develop a baseline pressure. If you spike alot during the day you will see the diferrence in the morning number, but it will be more of a smoothed number to give you that average baseline.

mine was 150/90 or 95, 6 yrs ago. i am on benicar hct 20/12.5 - i now avg 130/70 and sometimes lower , and the stress level is very high at my job as always.....

the beauty of the benicar is the lack of the side effects that no man is willing to deal with.

i do exercise 4-5 days per week. i mix weights and cardio.

I'm also a very poor patient. I rarely do what I'm supposed to, and my b/p has been borderline high for a few years now.

I didn't ask what the medication you were prescribed was.

Since this is a new problem, you should have been put on Hydrodiuril/Hydrochlorothiazide/HCTZ 25 mg I would guess.

Lastly, easier said than done, if you can lose your weight, you probably won't have any more issues.

Above the Clouds....
UGA, I was told I had high BP when I was 22 yrs old. I went thru renal scans and every test you could think of back then. They never found anything and told me it was a chemical thing with my body.

Needless to say I've been on BP meds ever since and I would rather be on them and have it under control than not be on them and something happen.

Yes thats the script she wrote

While I agree I need to lose more weight, the thing I found odd is that 5 months ago when I was 280 my BP was fine:shrug:

Thanks guys, this makes me feel better about having it filled. Better safe than sorry I guess.

that 'script isn't too bad either. It's a simple diuretic and doesn't have all the side effects some of the bigger guns (beta blockers/calcium channel blockers and other classes). I think it's a good sign that your PCP prescribed that drug too. Hypertension is the "silent killer". Most of the time, you don't feel bad with it. Hypertension is also left untreated often (especially by men) because it can cause you to have performance issues. Face it and I'm going to put it bluntly here... If a man's dik doesn't work and it's caused by a medicine, he's probably not going to take it. That's just how we're geared.

Just make sure you take the HCTZ when you wake up and when you have easy access to the bathroom. ;)
