Shawn Springs follows Terrell Owens whenever the star wide receiver changes teams. The New England Patriots hope their new cornerback does that next season on the field.

The Patriots announced the signing of Springs, a 12-year veteran who always has played in the same division as Owens. That continues with his signing after Owens joined the Buffalo Bills, setting up a twice-a-year matchup in the AFC East.

"I texted him and told him 'Stop following me around,' " Springs said in a conference call after the Patriots announced his signing Wednesday. "We've been in the NFC West together. We were in the NFC East together. And now we're in the AFC East together.

"With me and Terrell, people know that I think he's a competitor and I'm a competitor. We never made it about us. It was always both of us trying to work really hard to help our teams win. I guess the media people make it (seem) more like a rivalry, but it was never like that."

The Patriots also announced the signing of former Detroit Lions cornerback Leigh Bodden, 27, adding experience to a young secondary. Bodden said Tuesday he had signed a one-year deal.

Springs, who turned 34 Wednesday, played the last five seasons for the Washington Redskins after spending his first seven years with the Seattle Seahawks, who drafted him with the third overall pick out of Ohio State.

Owens spent his first eight seasons with San Francisco, followed by two with Philadelphia and three with Dallas, which released him last week.

Ellis Hobbs, 25, starts at one cornerback and Springs could win the job on the other side. The Patriots drafted two cornerbacks last year: Terrence Wheatley in the second round and Jonathan Wilhite in the fourth. The starting safeties are James Sanders, 25, and Brandon Meriweather, 24.

"I have veteran experience that I can bring to the team but I can really run and I still feel like I can run and I can play at a high level," Springs said.

He has started 147 of his 157 games, with 32 interceptions and six fumble recoveries. He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1998 season and is the only defensive back in NFL history who led his team in interceptions and sacks in the same season, 2004 with Washington.

He played in nine games last season and made one tackle with an interception and a sack. A calf injury sidelined him for the rest of 2008.

Springs played well against Owens while with the Redskins and thinks that might have attracted the Patriots to him.

"That could have helped," he said. "But you know in New England, it's not about one individual player. I think it's more of a team thing, anyway. So regardless of whether it's me or Leigh Bodden or Ellis Hobbs or Wheatley or whoever the guys are, I think with the Patriots, you have to play what the defense calls."

Bodden spent one year with Detroit after playing his first five seasons with the Cleveland Browns, who signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent from Duquesne. He had 13 interceptions and five fumble recoveries in 75 NFL games, 53 of them starts.

He told Sirius NFL Radio on Tuesday that he settled for the one-year deal after seeking a long-term contract because he wanted to be a Patriot.

"I am just excited I finally got something done with them," Bodden said. "We just got the one-year deal done and I am excited to go play with Bill (Belichick) and the Patriots and have a great year."

little ..or rather really surprised by the Springs signing . More specifically the numbers they gave him. i am not sure what they are doing this off season thus far but its early.

i like the Bodden signing as he seems on paper to fit the system so to speak but I cant see 11 million for springs (13 million with incentives) I have a hard time justifying cutting Vrabel for 2.5 million cap hit while signing a 34 year old corner coming off another season of injury.

Springs has started all but 10 of his career games.
I love the Springs signing.Las year was a off year hampered by injuries, but is not the trend with him.

Should help, where help is needed alot.
As far as Vrabel.Tough one.He will be missed.

But I dont have a problem with it.
I think there weaknesses are elswere, like the secondary. And they addressed it with these 2.

If he wanted a long term deal, and wanted to be a Patriot, why didn't he sign a mulit-year deal with them? They gave Springs, who will be 34 when this season a 3 year deal, and Bodden, who is 27 only 1 year. What am I missing here??

Good.Leaves salary space, and the option to part ways if things dont work out.Springs odviously has a better resume.Age is overrated IMO,im high on Springs a great cover-man,undesputed.

As far as bodden.Heres a piece from yesterdays article in the Boston Herald:Bodden, who disputed published reports that he walked away from a four year deal with the pats, said he though the one year contract he signed was "the best thing to do" for both sides.

How anyone is complaining(this is not directed at you)is beyound me.After last years beatings we took. What the contract is shouldnt matter.
Its an upgrade plain and simple.

Not to mention that Springs can play Free safety as well as cb.

Galloway Latest to sign with Pats

Galloway Latest to sign with Pats

Joey Galloway is a nice catch
Veteran WR on board in Foxboro
By John Tomase / Patriots Notebook
Sunday, March 15, 2009 - Added 17h ago

Patriots beat writer John Tomase joined the Herald in 2005 after six years covering the Red Sox.

The Resurrection Train is pulling into Gillette Stadium with another passenger: Joey Galloway.

The veteran wide receiver agreed to a one-year deal with the Patriots [team stats] yesterday that will bring him to camp to compete for the No. 3 wide receiver job with recently acquired Greg Lewis.

?This is a special opportunity to play for a premier owner, organization, team and coach,? said Shawn Trell, Galloway?s agent.

The 37-year-old Galloway ranks 25th all time in receiving yardage with just more than 10,000, but he?ll be looking to bounce back after an injury-marred 2008 season with Tampa Bay.

Foot ailments limited the former Ohio State standout to just 13 catches for 138 yards, and he was released by the Bucs on Feb. 25. He had topped 1,000 yards in each of the previous three seasons, however, and for his career has caught 77 touchdowns and averaged almost 16 yards a reception.

?He?s 100 percent healthy and remained the Bucs? fastest player at the end of last season,? Trell said. ?This isn?t his last season. Joey has been blessed with tremendous ability, but it is his work and training habits that have allowed him to play in the NFL as long as he has. This organization doesn?t make this move if they don?t believe he still has plenty left.?

He won?t have the pressure of being a No. 1 target with the Pats, who are looking for someone to complement Randy Moss and Wes Welker. When healthy, Galloway has traditionally been considered one of the top deep threats in the game, and now he?ll have Tom Brady [stats] throwing him passes.

?Playing with Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker is certainly compelling and was clearly part of the decision-making process,? Trell said.

Wright re-signs

The Patriots also reached an agreement with free agent defensive lineman Mike Wright on a four-year deal worth $7.5 million, with another potential $10 million in playing-time escalators.

Wright?s deal was first reported by ESPN.

Wright had drawn interest from the Broncos and Cardinals in free agency and was in demand because of his ability to play both inside on the nose and outside at end in the 3-4.

The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder has become a valuable member of the defensive line rotation for the Pats.

Uh, you need to check your stats there Rusty..

Springs is ALWAYS hurt. He has missed 43 starts in his career.

He missed 22 starts from his time in Seattle from '97 to '03 w/ 13 of them being missed from '01-'03.

In his time w/ Washington he missed 21 starts. Only playing 9 in 2 of the 3 years.

He hasn't played a full season, 16 games, in 9 years!!! :scared

That makes 43 starts & 35 entire games missed in his career. That doesnt even include games he started but didnt finish which would push the # up to about 50 career games. It is absolutely a trend & more common than not for him to be hurt, even more so as he gets older.

Springs being hurt ='s :padlock:

What I should of said was he started all but Ten games in his career he has played, but at the same time you make it sound like hes a wasted signing, which is just not true.

He played in all games in 07,and my guess is the strength and conditioning people up north here will take good care of him.
If only we can get Peppers now ,the Pats will be sittn pretty.Altou never mind Bradys knee, how bout that damn Giesle ,she worries me!:scared

Rusty:

absolutely agree that secondary was a big offseason issue. i do not nec. disagree with signing springs if it was for short money and short time. my issue is with the length and money..more so the length. but no guaranteed contracts in NFL so they can cut him but i still do not like taking a cap hit with him either.

i understand what your saying though...

they need a couple more decent signs..

springs was a stud when first arrived on scene in sea, livong on e coast didnt see..hear much from--though few times i've seen bodden, (tv with browns) struck as a "always around the ball" kinda player. i think he'll have a really good yr and pleasently surpise. thats my thought

Springs is a very very good cb when healthy. Key word being healthy. I doubt the pats will ask him to be an every down cb?

The underated pickup was Bodden. He did really well in CLE two years ago. He's not a cover 2 cb like the Lions tried to make him. I have no doubt Bodden will raise his game like he did with the Browns.
