Can someone please explain to me what sense it makes to pull people out of the game when they get into "foul trouble". Never made any sense to me when I played and it doesn't make sense to me now.

I feel like it is one of the "conventional wisdoms" that has no real logic behind it.

I think the mentality is that you get to save him for the last quarters when you really need him.

mostly happens with starters.

On the course!
And that goes away when he sits down for 5 minutes of game time?

Of course not. But, the other team still knows that player, and others who go sit on the bench, can still come back. Once he fouls out......he's no longer a factor they need to concern themselves with.

Plus, I think it does give a guy a chance to clear his head.

Besides......what is the difference if he comes in "after the other guys get the team in trouble", or he plays until he fouls out, and then the team sinks?

I suppose you always have the hope that he never fouls out, but players need periodic rest anyway, so whay not give it to a guy when he's in trouble?

yeah...it`s better that he comes back in after the game`s out of reach...then he can stage an incredible miracle comeback and "dickie v" can proclaim him a "red diaper doper dandy" or some other ridiculous, made-up moranic schtick that comes from that muddy, confused empty gourd and earns "dickie v" a 6 figure salary at espn......

it all makes perfect sense...:grins:

This is a tough one....let's say you have a starter that picks up his 2nd foul 5 minutes into the game and you take him out for the rest of the half - then you are guaranteed he will be playing 25 minutes max of the game - and that's assuming he doesn't come out the 2nd half...

You run a risk if you let him play, but you also have a much better chance of getting 30+ minutes out of the player..

How many times, when a guy sits the last 15 of the first half with 2 fouls, do they end up finishing the game with 2 or 3 fouls anyway?

I guess I can see both sides of this - call me Switzerland I guess...

I like the point about giving the guy a chance to clear his head and how it lets the other team know he is still a threat. The thing that annoys me though, is I highly doubt that's the thought process when they get pulled.

I think the conventional wisdom is that you get the guy off the court so that he doesn't foul out. Which is absurd if you think about.....I will take my player off the court so the referee doesn't do it for me. Either way, the guy is coming off the floor. I would want my best players out there playing as much as possible and I will not let the fear of a 5th foul keep me from putting my best team on the floor for as long as possible. There is no penalty after the 5th foul ejection. It is not like you get a 5pt reduction.

..........................................................

the best players will seldom foul out of games.

I would tell my team if you foul out you have failed the team, plain and simple.

You can play strong defense without fouling, unless your a big dumb moose.

So, take your starters (best players) off the floor and save them for a situation created by your lessor players?

I can understand pulling a player in foul trouble, but I don't think it should be arbitrary. I hate the strategy of pulling your player in the first half if he has 2 fouls and not putting him back in until the second half (without exception) :nono: which can create the situation you listed that I have quoted above.

SixFive, it is clear to me why you are a turnip farmer and not a basketball coach.
