virus protection - latest/greatest?

Just got a new PC... free 30 norton anti-virus just ran out and and WOW wants money for me to use theirs.

Wanted to find out from the experts what is the latest/greatest free anti-virus software out there?

Clints (6-5) brother turned me on to
Avast! Home Edition in your report above--and been very satisfied with it.

I got hit with the Antivirus 2009 last week. It makes you think your computer is infected with a variety of malware. Changed my background screen and just generally made it run slowly. I run Norton on my computer and it missed it but I think it would get by most security. Anywho to fix it I used http://www.malwarebytes.org/

This doesn't replace your computer's antivirus protection. Think of it as a supplement.
