Preview: Pirates (11-9) at Brewers (10-10)
Date: April 29, 2009 1:05 PM EDT

With their best pitcher on the mound and a four-run lead to work with, the Pittsburgh Pirates seemed to be on their way to snapping their hex against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.

Instead, they're still wondering what it will take to finally top Milwaukee.

The Pirates' losing streak against the Brewers is up to 14 and their skid in Milwaukee is 17, a pair of increasingly pesky slumps they'll hope to extinguish in Wednesday afternoon's series finale at Miller Park.

Pittsburgh (11-9) came to Milwaukee on Monday having won five of six, and at 11-7 was off to its best start since winning 12 of its first 18 games in 2002.

As usual, though, the Pirates forgot how to win as soon as they found the Brewers (10-10) in the opposing dugout. Milwaukee scored five runs in the eighth inning on its way to a 10-5 win on Monday, then rallied from four down against starter Paul Maholm for a 6-5 victory Tuesday.

"Sooner or later the baseball gods are going to catch up with you,' Pittsburgh manager John Russell said.

The Pirates came into this series with a 2.97 ERA that was the best in baseball, but that number has risen to 3.52 after letting the Brewers erupt for 16 earned runs in two games.

Pittsburgh may have the right pitcher going in Wednesday's finale as it looks for its first win at Miller Park since May 3, 2007. Ian Snell (1-2, 4.50 ERA) is 4-1 with a 2.38 ERA in five career starts against the Brewers, though he faced them only once last season.

Snell has been prone to giving up home runs - he's allowed four in 22 innings this season - and he's let two of Milwaukee's biggest power threats take him deep. Prince Fielder is 7-for-15 (.467) with a homer off Snell while Ryan Braun is 3-for-8 (.375) with a home run and four RBIs.

The right-hander will need to have better control than he had Friday at San Diego. Snell gave up six hits and five walks - allowing three runs - over five innings as the Pirates lost 4-3 in 11 innings.

"The walks were killers, and pitch location was terrible," Snell told the team's official Web site. "But I battled and kept the team in the game and that's what matters."

One other bat that Snell will want to be wary of belongs to starter Yovani Gallardo (2-1, 3.71), who's already hit a three-run homer this season.

He's been pretty effective on the mound as well. Gallardo pitched six scoreless innings on April 18 at New York, then delivered the finest start of his career his last time out. He pitched his first complete game Friday at Houston, allowing five hits and striking out seven in a 5-2 victory.

"He was in the low 100s in pitch count," manager Ken Macha said. "Using all his pitches like he did, maybe gives him an idea that he wants to go out there and pitch complete games, managing his pitches like he did tonight."

Gallardo is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three career starts against Pittsburgh, striking out 21 in 17 innings.

First baseman Adam LaRoche, hitting .367 with two homers and eight RBIs in his last eight games, is 5-of-9 with a homer against Gallardo.

The Brewers right-hander, though, won't have to worry about facing Nate McLouth. Pittsburgh's All-Star center fielder has missed the team's last five games with a strained oblique muscle and is still a few days away from returning.

Preview: Angels (8-11) at Orioles (9-12)

The Los Angeles Angels aren't used to residing near the bottom of the AL West. The basement of the AL East, meanwhile, is becoming an all too familiar home for the Baltimore Orioles.

The Angels seek their first three-game win streak of the season Wednesday afternoon when they conclude a brief two-game set with the Orioles at Camden Yards.

After their fourth division title in five years and a franchise-record 100 wins last season, the Angels (8-11) were again expected to be the class of the West in 2009.

Injuries to pitchers Kelvim Escobar, John Lackey, Dustin Moseley, Darren Oliver and Ervin Santana, however, have left Los Angeles with a makeshift rotation. Star outfielder Vladimir Guerrero is also out with a torn pectoral muscle, weakening a lineup that lost slugger Mark Teixeira and Garret Anderson to free agency.

The Angels also have endured a tragedy-filled April beginning with the death of pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was killed along with two friends in a collision with a suspected drunken driver during the first week of the season.

Before Tuesday night's 7-5 victory over the Orioles (9-12), the Angels were the only team in the majors yet to win consecutive games. The slow start is in stark contrast to last year when they won 12 of their first 19 contests.

"I couldn't tell you when we had two in a row anytime, or when we lost two in a row or anything. We looked at the game we had on this night,' manager Mike Scioscia said. "And when this one's over, we'll turn the page and carry a little momentum into (Wednesday) afternoon's game.'

Howie Kendrick hit a two-run homer and Kendry Morales had two doubles and two RBIs Tuesday for Los Angeles, which was coming off an 8-0 victory over Seattle on Sunday.

The Angels are 14-6 against the Orioles since the start of the 2007 season, winning seven of 10 at Camden Yards.

Melvin Mora had three hits and two RBIs in his first game since April 12 for the Orioles, losers of 10 of 13 after a 6-2 start. Baltimore has finished higher than fourth in the East only once since 1997.

Orioles manager Dave Trembley was ejected for arguing a balk call on Jamie Walker in the seventh inning.

"Angel (Hernandez) didn't see it. He didn't think he stepped good enough towards first base. I don't like it when somebody is wrong and they try to tell me they're right. They are umpires, they do a great job, but they are not always right.'

Right fielder Nick Markakis extended his hitting streak to 15 games, two short of his career high. He's hitting .390 (23-for-59) with 14 RBIs during his run.

Shane Loux (0-2, 6.61 ERA) looks to rebound from his worst performance of the season for Los Angeles. The right-hander's ERA jumped nearly three full runs after he was reached for seven runs and 11 hits over four innings Friday in an 8-3 home loss to Seattle.

He made his only career appearance against the Orioles on Aug. 5, throwing two scoreless innings of relief in the Angels' 3-0 loss.

Koji Uehara (2-1, 4.56) tries to become the first Baltimore starter to three wins. He was in line for that third victory after limiting Texas to two runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings on Friday, but George Sherrill served up a two-run homer in the ninth as the Orioles lost 5-4.

Since getting hit hard at Texas on April 13, the right-hander has allowed only four runs and nine hits in his past two starts, spanning 13 2-3 innings.

The New York Mets' starting pitching has been an adventure this season, and manager Jerry Manuel is already hinting about making changes to his rotation.

Fortunately for Manuel, there's still one starter he knows he can count on.

Johan Santana will look to continue his nearly flawless start Wednesday afternoon, but he'll also be looking for revenge against the only team - and only pitcher - to beat him as the Mets and visiting Florida Marlins play the decisive finale of their three-game series.

New York's second through fifth starters have a combined 6.64 ERA in 16 outings - leaving Manuel to speculate about possible changes - but its ace has lived up to his billing. Santana (3-1, 0.70 ERA) has been the NL's best starting pitcher, yielding two earned runs in 25 2-3 innings while striking out 37.

Florida (12-8) will be sending out its top starter also, as well as the only pitcher who's outdueled Santana. New York (9-11) didn't score a run off Josh Johnson (2-0, 2.20) while Santana was in the game April 12 at Florida, and two unearned runs over seven innings were the difference in a 2-1 Mets loss despite Santana striking out 13.

Johnson, meanwhile, improved to 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA in six starts against the Mets.

The two-time Cy Young award winner got back in the win column in his last two starts. Santana limited Milwaukee on five hits over seven innings in a 1-0 victory on April 18, then allowed a run over six innings while striking out 10 Friday in a 4-3 win over Washington, snapping New York's four-game losing streak.

"I'm always up a challenge. It was a big challenge for us tonight after losing four games in a row," Santana said. "You want to stop everything right there, and I knew I have to do something, you know, to make that happen."

Prior to the loss earlier this month, Santana was 5-0 with a 1.83 ERA in five starts against Florida.

While the Mets had a four-game skid heading into Santana's last start, the Marlins were dealing with a more troubling slide heading into their game at Citi Field on Tuesday. Florida had scored just 16 runs while losing seven in a row, a disturbing reversal in its play after winning 11 of 12 to start the season.

Jorge Cantu made sure the losing streak wouldn't continue. He hit a two-run homer off starter Livan Hernandez in the fourth and added a three-run shot off reliever Sean Green in the seventh to lift the Marlins to a 7-4 comeback victory.

"I hope with this win we're going to start rolling again,' said Cantu, who's hitting .357 with team highs of five homers and 17 RBIs. "We really needed to get out of this thing.'

Cantu's production is even more critical with shortstop Hanley Ramirez sidelined with an injured right hand. Ramirez had to miss Tuesday's game after being hit by a pitch on Monday, and manager Fredi Gonzalez says he's "50-50" to play Wednesday.

Ramirez is 2-for-15 (.133) against Santana while Cantu is 5-for-23 (.217) with eight strikeouts.

Johnson followed up his complete game against the Mets by giving up six runs in six innings at Washington, but pitched considerably better Friday against Philadelphia. He gave up three hits over seven innings and struck out eight, but closer Matt Lindstrom imploded in the ninth as Florida lost 7-3.

Carlos Beltran, who has an 11-game hitting streak, and David Wright are each 2-for-15 (.133) against Johnson.

The Seattle Mariners appear to finally be getting the kind of return they expected when they invested in Erik Bedard prior to last season.

The left-hander looks for another strong outing while trying to help the Mariners win their three-game road series with the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.

Bedard is healthy this year after undergoing shoulder surgery in July, which ended his first season in Seattle with a 6-4 record and 3.67 ERA in 15 starts. It was a disappointing result for the Mariners (13-8) after they traded five prospects to Baltimore for Bedard last February.

So far this season, Bedard (2-1, 2.08 ERA) has performed like the pitcher that totaled 28 wins in 2006 and '07. He allowed two earned runs and five hits while striking out six in 6 2-3 innings of an 8-3 road victory over Los Angeles on Friday.

"I think he is one of the top five lefties in the game," Angels outfielder Torii Hunter said of Bedard, who has 29 strikeouts in 26 innings. "Give him eight runs, put that in the bag. This guy's curveball was A-1."

Bedard is 3-2 with a 3.97 ERA in seven starts against Chicago, and will be making his first versus the White Sox as a member of the Mariners.

Though the teams split a doubleheader Tuesday, Chicago (10-10) was held to eight hits over both contests. Paul Konerko's two-run double was one of two hits for the White Sox in a 2-1 opening victory that lasted 1 hour, 52 minutes.

"That's a miracle,' manager Ozzie Guillen said of his team winning without much offense.

Russell Branyan had a career-high five hits in the nightcap after going 0-for-3 in the first game, while Yuniesky Betancourt hit a three-run homer and Felix Hernandez shut down the White Sox in Seattle's 9-1 win.

Branyan is batting .358 (19-for-53) for the Mariners, who are 3-2 on a six-game road trip and have yet to lose a series away from home.

"I've never been given a shot to really play this game on an everyday basis,' said Branyan, who's taken over as the starter at first base. "What is happening this year is a first go-around for me.'

Betancourt had four hits and five RBIs in the second game. He's 3-for-7 with a homer and six RBIs against Gavin Floyd, Chicago's scheduled starter for Wednesday.

Floyd (2-2, 5.79) hopes to put his last outing behind him after allowing five earned runs, nine hits and five walks in 4 1-3 innings of a 14-0 loss to Toronto on Friday.

"He couldn't find the plate," Guillen told the White Sox's official Web site. "He has to go back next start and figure it out."

That might not be easy for the right-hander, who's 1-2 with a 9.88 ERA against the Mariners.

Two of Konerko's five career hits against Bedard are home runs. He went 3-for-7 with three RBIs overall Tuesday and is 7-for-15 with six RBIs during a four-game hitting streak.

Chicago's Jim Thome is expected to sit out again Wednesday after missing the doubleheader with a sore heel.

Preview: Padres (11-9) at Rockies (7-12)

Date: April 29, 2009 3:10 PM EDT

It's been almost two weeks since the San Diego Padres won consecutive games, let alone a series.

The Padres have a chance to do both as they conclude a three-game road set with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

Pinch-hitter Luis Rodriguez's RBI single in the ninth inning helped San Diego (11-9) rally for a 4-3 victory over Colorado on Tuesday.

The win snapped a four-game road losing streak for the Padres, who won for the second time in eight games after starting 9-3. San Diego last won two in a row during a three-game winning streak from April 16-18, which included consecutive victories at Philadelphia to secure the club's last winning series.

On Tuesday, Scott Hairston hit a two-run homer to raise his average to .400 (16-for-40). Hairston is platooning with left-handed hitting Jody Gerut in center field and will likely be out of the lineup Wednesday against Colorado right-hander Aaron Cook.

Gerut, who's batting .263, is 2-for-13 lifetime against Cook (0-1, 8.35 ERA).

Facing San Diego might present Cook with a strong opportunity to finally record his first victory in his fifth start.

Cook, who won a career-high 16 games in 2008, is 11-4 with a 2.37 ERA in 18 starts against the Padres, but has been inconsistent early this season.

He allowed three runs and seven hits while walking six in six innings, but didn't factor in the decision of a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

"It's not the outcome I wanted, but I feel like I got over a little bit of a hump," said Cook, who felt he finally had command of his sinker. "Hopefully, I carry that on to the next start.'

Dexter Fowler, Todd Helton and Seth Smith each had two hits Tuesday for Colorado (7-12), which scored 22 runs in winning its previous two contests.

Fowler, who stole five bases in a 12-7 series-opening victory Monday, did not have a steal in his latest contest, but is 7-for-13 with five runs scored over his last three games.

Colorado outfielder Brad Hawpe is likely to miss a second straight game after being hit in the neck Monday by San Diego catcher Nick Hundley's throw to second. Hawpe is hitting .328 with a team-leading 16 RBIs.

"I just have to wait and see what the trainers say, but I feel a lot better than I did (Monday)," Hawpe told the Rockies' official Web site.

Kevin Correia (0-1, 4.50) takes the ball for the Padres after he allowed three runs and three hits while walking four in five innings of a 4-3, 11-inning win over Pittsburgh on Friday. He's walked 10 batters in 16 innings over three starts.

"I'm walking guys, but it's not a command issue, it's a decision issue," the right-hander told the Padres' official Web site. "I have never pitched like that in my career. I think I'm trying to make the perfect pitch."

Correia, in his first season with his hometown team after spending his first six with San Francisco, is 1-1 with a 2.52 ERA in five starts against Colorado.

Preview: Cubs (10-9) at Diamondbacks (8-12)

Date: April 29, 2009 3:40 PM EDT

A day after one key member returned to the Chicago Cubs' lineup, they appear ready to welcome another back.

Trying to get healthy, the Cubs look to win consecutive games for the first time in over a week as they conclude their three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Chicago (10-9) welcomed back struggling slugger Milton Bradley, who made one start since suffering a groin injury April 12. Though he was 1-for-24 coming into the contest, Bradley went 2-for-4 and Alfonso Soriano homered for the second straight contest while driving in four runs in Chicago's 11-3 win at Arizona.

The Cubs' lineup could receive another boost with first baseman Derrek Lee likely to play Wednesday after missing the last two games with neck spasms.

Though Lee is batting .209, his presence can only be positive for a club that won for only the second time in seven games and hasn't posted two straight victories since a three-game winning streak from April 17-21. The Cubs, who fell 7-2 to the Diamondbacks (8-12) on Monday, haven't won a series since taking two of three against St. Louis in a rain-shortened set April 16-18.

"We're in good shape, if you ask me," Lee told the Cubs' official Web site. "It's early, and I think when we get guys back, we'll start hitting our stride."

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, though, is likely to miss a fifth consecutive game after straining his calf Friday in St. Louis.

"If it's not any better then, we're going to have to weigh all our options,' Cubs manager Lou Piniella said of Ramirez, who's hitting .358 with three homers and 14 RBIs.

Chicago is fortunate Soriano is swinging a hot bat. He is 5-for-12 with two home runs and five RBIs in three games since returning to the leadoff spot after going 1-for-8 while batting third in his previous two contests.

Soriano is 5-for-18 with a homer and three RBIs against Arizona's scheduled starter Doug Davis (1-3, 3.67 ERA).

Davis is 7-6 with a 3.52 ERA in 14 starts versus the Cubs, but looks to bounce back from his latest setback.

He allowed five runs and nine hits in six innings of a 5-1 loss to Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

"I don't think the line does the outing justice," Davis told the Diamondbacks' official Web site. "At the same time, that's the way baseball goes. You are going to have those hiccups that you have to battle. The next time you go out there, you just forget about that."

Chicago counters with Ryan Dempster (1-0, 4.88), who allowed three runs and seven hits while striking out six, but didn't factor in the decision of a 4-3 loss at St. Louis on Friday. The right-hander, who has not factored in the decision of his last two starts, has struggled against Arizona, going 1-4 with a 6.07 ERA in 10 starts versus the Diamondbacks.

Felipe Lopez had two hits and drove in a run Tuesday for Arizona, which failed in its attempt to win a season-high three in a row. Lopez is batting .321, but 4-for-23 (.174) with a homer against Dempster.

While the New York Yankees have their future invested in Joba Chamberlain, the same can be said about the Detroit Tigers with Rick Porcello.

The two young right-handers square off Wednesday night when the Yankees finish a three-game road series against the Tigers.

Chamberlain (0-0, 3.94 ERA) is in his third season with New York - and first as a full-time starter. He excelled in the bullpen last year before the Yankees (10-10) opted to move the 23-year-old into the rotation in June.

In 12 starts last season, Chamberlain went 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA. He's struggled a bit with his control in three outings this year, with 10 walks in 16 innings after walking four in 5 1-3 on Friday in a 5-4 loss at Boston in 11 innings.

Chamberlain seems like a seasoned veteran compared to Porcello (1-2, 4.50), a 20-year-old who hails from West Orange, N.J. Porcello never pitched higher than Class A before this season, but has already shown why he was a first-round selection by the Tigers (11-9) in 2007.

After losing his major league debut April 9, Porcello limited Seattle to one run in seven innings 10 days later to win 8-2. He gave up five runs over six innings Friday in a 6-1 loss at Kansas City.

"I was tickled to death with Porcello," manager Jim Leyland told the Tigers' official Web site about the loss to the Royals. "In a lot of ways, I was happier with him tonight than I was when he got the win in Seattle. He found out the value of using his pitches and used them much more effectively tonight as the game went on."

Chamberlain has never started against the Tigers. He has thrown four scoreless innings of relief against them, yielding one hit.

These two starters faced each other in a spring training game March 21 as the Yankees won 4-3. Chamberlain allowed one run and four hits over 3 1-3 innings while Porcello yielded two runs and four hits in 2 1-3.

New York ended its four-game losing streak Tuesday with an 11-0 victory thanks to a 10-run outburst in the seventh inning. The Yankees had scored three runs over 24 innings before sending 14 batters to the plate in that big inning.

Jose Molina hit his second career grand slam to make it 10-0. The Yankees had six hits in the inning and drew four walks.

"That was great," said Molina, who sacrificed earlier in the inning. "I was just doing what the manager wanted me to do."

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, matching his career high. He has four straight multihit efforts, going 9-for-19 with six RBIs in that span.

New York finally slowed down Magglio Ordonez, who went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Ordonez batted .464 (13-for-28) with 10 RBIs in his previous seven games versus the Yankees.

Detroit had a three-game winning streak snapped, suffering its first shutout of the season. The Tigers wasted starter Edwin Jackson's six scoreless innings.

"I've never seen anything like that in my life," the 64-year-old Leyland said. "You are 0-0 through six, and then it is 10-0? That's not something I ever remember."

After snapping their lengthy win streak in disheartening fashion, the Boston Red Sox will try to start another behind an improving starter who has never lost to the Cleveland Indians.

Looking for a third straight quality start, Jon Lester will attempt to help the Red Sox win Wednesday night's finale of their three-game road series.

Despite 14 hits, the Red Sox (13-7) committed three costly errors to end their 11-game win streak in Tuesday night's 9-8 defeat, the last of which allowed the winning run to score with two outs in the ninth. Reliever Javier Lopez failed to catch a routine toss from first baseman Kevin Youkilis while trying to cover the bag.

"It's a play a pitcher makes a thousand times in his career," Lopez said. "I just took my eyes off it. There's no real excuse for it. It's a tough way to break a winning streak."

Of the nine runs Boston allowed, only five were earned. That's only two fewer than Lester (1-2, 4.88 ERA) has surrendered in his last three starts against Cleveland.

The left-hander has beaten the Indians twice in that time while giving up seven runs. He yielded one run over six innings in a 6-1 win Sept. 25. After giving up 11 runs in his first two starts, Lester has settled in to allow two over his past two with 16 strikeouts in those 13 innings.

Mike Lowell extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a third-inning single and is hitting .392 (20-for-51) with 18 RBIs during the run. In his first game since July 11, shortstop Julio Lugo was one of four players with at least two hits for Boston, which has batted .319 over the last 12 games.

Lugo missed most of last year with a strained left quadriceps and hurt his right knee in spring training, beginning the season on the disabled list following arthroscopic surgery.

In rallying from three early deficits, the Indians produced nine runs and 13 hits - the most since their 22-run, 25-hit outburst in the new Yankee Stadium on April 18. In its previous eight games, Cleveland (8-13) had scored 23 runs while batting .218.

"We need a win like this," second baseman Mark DeRosa told the team's official Web site. "It was a long night. We were able to keep grinding."

DeRosa, who scored the winning run Tuesday, had a career high-tying four runs and four hits. DeRosa, who was hitting .195 heading into the series, is batting .406 (13-for-32) in his last seven meetings with Boston with two four-hit games in that span.

Victor Martinez, who is hitting a team-best .388, is on an eight-game hitting streak and is 4-for-6 against Lester.

The two will try to provide a struggling Fausto Carmona (1-3, 7.36) some support following another lackluster effort. The right-hander, who won 19 games in 2007, has allowed at least four earned runs in his four starts this season and hasn't pitched more than six innings.

Carmona has proved more effective as a starter than reliever against Boston. In two relief appearances, he gave up five runs, but has allowed four in two starts and pitched eight scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory July 25.

Giving up home runs has proved Brett Myers' biggest weakness as a starter. The Philadelphia Phillies' pitcher hasn't had that problem against the Washington Nationals.

With Myers slated to start Wednesday night, Philadelphia searches for its sixth straight win and sixth in a row at home over the woeful Nationals, who are off to their worst start in the franchise's 41 seasons.

Of the 26 hits the Phillies starter has given up this season, a major league-worst eight have been homers. That has contributed to Philadelphia's league-leading total of 40 allowed with at least one in a record 16 consecutive games to begin 2009.

"You could name a million factors," pitching coach Rich Dubee told the team's official Web site. "Trying to do too much. Trying to make too good of a pitch."

After saving 21 games in 2007 while allowing nine round-trippers, Myers was among the league leaders in home runs allowed last season with 29. But against Washington, he hasn't given up a long ball since Aug. 29, 2006, a span covering 14 appearances and five starts.

Myers has conceded just one run in his last two starts versus the Nationals and recorded his third career shutout in an Aug. 20 victory.

Luckily for Myers and the Phillies staff, their offense been clicking of late. Chase Utley homered twice and Raul Ibanez went deep for the second straight game in Tuesday's 7-1 victory.

Both players extended five-game hitting streaks for Philadelphia, which has scored 46 runs during its win streak.

However, starter Cole Hamels left in the fifth inning with a sprained ankle Thursday, and it is uncertain if he will miss his next start. Last season's World Series MVP missed time in March with left shoulder inflammation and was struck by a liner in the same shoulder Thursday against Milwaukee.

Closer Brad Lidge is also expected to miss a few more days after suffering inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee.

The Nationals' record (4-15) hasn't been healthy all season, but Ryan Zimmerman has a chance to keep major league-leading hitting streak alive and well.

With a first-inning double Tuesday, Zimmerman extended his streak to 17 games. His 11 career hits against Myers are his most against any opposing pitcher, going 11-for-30 (.367) with 12 RBIs versus the Phillies starter.

Adam Dunn, who has homered in consecutive games, has three hits in 15 career at_bats against Myers, but two are home runs.

Nationals manager Manny Acta continues to try and find an answer for his flagging bullpen that has already blown six saves. Acta said Tuesday that Joel Hanrahan had lost his job as the team's closer and he'll choose who finishes games based on matchups, relying mainly on veterans Kips Wells and Julian Tavarez.

"All we are going to do is put the veteran guys at the end of the game and take the pressure off these young kids - put them in earlier," Acta told the team's official Web site.

Wednesday's scheduled starter Scott Olsen (0-3, 7.29) has allowed two earned runs in each of his last two starts, but has allowed at least three in eight of his last nine against the Phillies. The former Florida Marlins pitcher is making his first start in Philadelphia since Sept. 24, 2006, when he gave up seven runs in 2 2-3 innings.

Chipper Jones likely won't get the chance to beat the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night, so one of his teammates may again have to pick up the slack if the Atlanta Braves are going to take the finale of the three-game series at Turner Field.

Without the injured Brian McCann and Garret Anderson in the lineup to protect Jones, who's batting .333 this season and is 3-for-5 against scheduled starter Adam Wainwright, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa seems to certain to continue taking the bat out of the slugger's hands.

La Russa had Jones walked five times in the first two games of the series and in all four plate appearances Tuesday. One of those walks came in the eighth inning, and Jones came around to score the go-ahead run on Matt Diaz's two-run single in Atlanta's 2-1 victory.

Diaz had struck out twice earlier in the game and six times in 13 previous at_bats, but helped the Braves avoid a third straight loss.

"I've been struggling with strikeouts,' said Diaz, who has 13 in 48 at_bats this season but is 2-for-3 versus Wainwright. "I was just trying to put the ball in play.'

While Atlanta (10-10) tries to get on track offensively after scoring two runs in each of its last three games, it hopes Javier Vazquez (2-1, 2.63 ERA) continues his surprising early season success Wednesday. The right-hander has been a solid contributor to the Braves' revamped rotation, pitching at least six innings in all four starts while striking out 34 in 24 innings.

Vazquez won his second straight start Friday, recording nine strikeouts and allowing two runs in six innings of a 4-3 victory over Cincinnati.

"Javy should have won each of his starts," manager Bobby Cox told the Braves' official Web site.

Vazquez is 2-6 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts against the Cardinals, last facing them in 2006.

St. Louis has been held to seven runs in losing two of its last three games, with Albert Pujols going 1-for-9. The first baseman has yet to find a groove away from Busch Stadium, hitting .194 (6-for-31) with one homer and five RBIs in eight road games.

Pujols, though, is 5-for-13 with two doubles and a homer versus Vazquez.

Wainwright (2-0, 2.70) will try to provide another quality start for the Cardinals after Joel Pineiro and Kyle Lohse turned in strong outings in the first two games of the series. Wainwright has dominated the Braves, the team that drafted him in the first round in 2000, going 3-0 in as many starts with a 1.35 ERA. He has a 1.13 ERA versus Atlanta in six total appearances.

The right-hander is 5-0 with a 4.45 ERA in six road starts since May 12. He did not get a decision Friday against Chicago after giving up three runs - one earned - in seven innings of the Cardinals' 4-3 win.

St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina has a 12-game hitting streak, batting .409 (18-for-44) with a homer and eight RBIs in that span to raise his average to .353.
