had trouble locating gary's reading thread that he started a few months ago...

just finished reading this book about vince lombardi (based on terry ray's recommendation) & imo it was one of the best books that i have ever read....very moving & quite motivating...

this guy never had a losing season as a professional coach (won championships in 5 of 9 years with the packers)....& i found it amazing the influence & power he had over the people that he came in contact with.....not just with the players on his teams...ceos & politicians also...at one time he was getting $5gs per speaking engagement as a motivational speaker...an unheard of amount in the 1960's...

he hated prejudices of any kind...at one time he had a gay player on his team & told his coaches that he would get rid of anybody on the team if he heard anything that was derogatory towards this player.....as former player fuzzy thurston said about lombardi...he treated everybody on the team the same....like dogs...

i found it interesting that nixon had his people investigate whether lombardi had any interest in being his running mate for the 1968 election....but they found out he was very good friends with the kennedy family & was a life long democrat...although at the end of his life he was having 2nd thoughts about that....

here is a great quote from lombardi.....

" the difference between men is in energy, in the strong will, in the settled purpose & in the invincible determination"

the book is 500 pages & well worth the time...

AR, on the Fordham campus, there are many tributes to Lombardi's time here. Statues, plaques and buildings in his memory. It's always hard to imagine Fordham was once a national football power.

some of my fav quotes by him---

It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.

If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.

Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
