Chicago White Sox (15-17) at Cleveland Indians (12-22), 12:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Mark Buehrle (5-0, 2.61) Cleveland - Cliff Lee (1-5, 3.45)

Cleveland's Cliff Lee would be off to a much better start with better run support. Kind of like the one Chicago's Mark Buehrle has put together.

The two southpaws square off this afternoon in the finale of a three-game set between the Indians and White Sox at Progressive Field.

Lee went 22-3 last year and posted a 2.54 earned run average on the way to winning the American League's Cy Young Award, but despite a 3.45 ERA in seven starts this year, he is just 1-5. Since a 10-2 win over the Yankees on April 16, he is 0-3 over four starts despite pitching to a 1.74 ERA. Cleveland has plated just two runs over that time.

Lee, who allowed just one run over eight innings of a 1-0 loss to Detroit on Friday, is 5-5 with a 5.58 ERA in 19 career appearances versus the White Sox. The 30-year-old went 1-0 in two starts against them last year, allowing just a single run over 17 innings.

His counterpart this afternoon, Buehrle, brings a 5-0 mark into today's start, but it isn't all offensive support that is helping the lefty. Buehrle holds a solid 2.61 ERA on the year and carried a perfect game into the seventh inning of a win over Detroit last Thursday. He ended up pitching eight shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks.

Buehrle, who threw a no-hitter on April 18, 2007 versus Texas, has won nine of his last 10 decisions dating back to last year and is off to the first 5-0 start of his career. He is 9-12 with a 4.82 ERA in 33 lifetime games against Cleveland and 5-5 with a 4.37 ERA at Progressive Field.

"I keep on saying that I've pitched well, but going out and getting runs early and often, that always helps a starting pitcher," Buehrle told his team's official site. "I'm fortunate enough to get run support and make those pitches in key situations. I'm getting guys out when I need to get them."

The White Sox plated a pair of runs early in Tuesday's 7-4 victory, getting a two-run homer from former Indian Jim Thome in the first inning. Thome, who is 5-for-24 lifetime versus Lee, ended with a pair of two-run shots.

"You're not going to get hits every time," Thome, who was 3-for-22 going into Tuesday's contest, said. "But I think if your path to the ball is good and you feel good during your at-bats, ultimately that's where you want to be."

Jayson Nix also homered in helping Chicago halt a two-game slide. The White Sox will try to win their first series of May, as they have dropped all three of their previous sets not including a weather-shortened one-gamer with Detroit.

Chicago was without Carlos Quentin on Tuesday after he was scratched from the lineup with a sore left heel. Manager Ozzie Guillen told the White Sox's official site that he plans to sit Quentin, who is hitting .237 with eight homers and 18 RBI, again today, which would give him three straight days of rest due to tomorrow's off day.

Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the loss, the Indians' fifth in their last six games. Victor Martinez went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a pair of walks and Grady Sizemore went 1-for-4 to give him just four hits in his last 25 at-bats, dropping his average to .227.

Sizemore is a career .212 hitter (11-for-52) with three homers and six RBI against Buehrle, while Martinez is batting .320 (16-for-50) with a pair of homers and eight RBI versus him.

Chicago won 11 of 18 versus Cleveland last year, but lost five of nine at Progressive Field.

Cleveland's Cliff Lee is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, but Chicago's Mark Buehrle is currently pitching like someone worthy of the honor.

The two aces square off Wednesday when the White Sox and Indians meet in the finale of a three-game set at Progressive Field.

A lack of run support has contributed to Lee (1-5, 3.45 ERA) already losing more games than he did in 2008, when he was 22-3. Buehrle (5-0, 2.61), meanwhile, is off to the best start of his 10-year career.

He looks to become the first White Sox pitcher since Wilson Alvarez in 1994 to win his first six decisions.

"I feel so lucky,' Buehrle said. "It's an honor to pitch in the major leagues. It's a kid's game and I try to have as much fun as I can, win or lose.'

Pitching on five days' rest due to a rainout, the left-hander was perfect through 6 1-3 innings against Detroit on Thursday. He allowed one hit and struck out five over eight frames in the White Sox's 6-0 win.

"He's a guy when you go out there you better be on your toes, because something is going to happen," manager Ozzie Guillen told the White Sox's official Web site.

Buehrle is 8-12 with a 4.85 ERA in 32 starts against the Indians. He also allowed 13 earned runs in 6 2-3 innings over two starts in Cleveland last season.

Lee is 5-5 with a 5.42 ERA in 17 starts against Chicago (15-17), but went 1-0 with a 0.53 ERA in two starts versus the White Sox last year.

The left-hander gave up one run and seven hits in eight innings of a 1-0 loss to the Tigers on Friday.

"I felt I did everything I could to give the team a chance to win," Lee told the Indians' official Web site. "So many other aspects of the game are out of my hands."

Lee is 0-3 with a 1.74 ERA in his last four starts, but has received two runs of support during that span.

Former Indian Jim Thome is batting .208 (5 for 24) against Lee, but hit a pair of two-run homers in Chicago's 7-4 win on Tuesday after Cleveland (12-22) won 9-4 a day earlier.

Thome is 4-for-7 with four runs scored in his last two games after entering the series batting .198.

"It's hard when you're struggling,' said Thome, who has 547 homers and trails Mike Schmidt by one for 13th on the all-time list. "You have to understand there are going to be hard times and they're sure not fun to go through.'

The White Sox - 3-7 since last winning two in a row from April 29-May 1 - are expected to be without left fielder Carlos Quentin for a second straight game because of a heel problem. Quentin is batting .237 with eight homers and 18 RBIs.

Asdrubal Cabrera had two hits with an RBI on Tuesday and is 6 for 14 in his last three games for the Indians, who have lost five of six and are last in the AL Central.

"We have to keep trying,' said manager Eric Wedge, who received a vote of confidence from general manager Mark Shapiro on Tuesday. "Now we have to try and win the series. We're working to string something together.'

Atlanta Braves (16-17) at New York Mets (18-14), 1:10 p.m.

Atlanta Braves (16-17) at New York Mets (18-14), 1:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Jo-Jo Reyes (0-2, 5.48) New York - Jon Niese (0-0, 3.00)

The New York Mets try to wrap an eight-game homestand near- perfect this afternoon, when they play the finale of a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.

The Mets are 6-1 thus far on their stand, helping them move into first place in the National League East. The club owns a one-game lead over Philadelphia and is 1 1/2 games up on Florida.

New York dropped the opener of this test on Monday to halt a seven-game winning streak, but responded with a 4-3 victory last night that saw Carlos Beltran draw a bases-loaded walk off Jeff Bennett (0-1) in the 10th inning.

"With the count 3-2, I was looking for a good pitch to swing. It was a bad pitch," Beltran said.

Jose Reyes went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and scored the game-winning run. Beltran ended with two hits and also scored, while a pinch-hitting Luis Castillo tied the game in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

New York played for a second straight game without Carlos Delgado due to a right hip issue that could still land him on the disabled list. The first baseman is unlikely to play today and is hitting .298 with four homers and 23 RBI this year.

The Mets will attempt to win this series with Jon Niese on the hill. The left- hander will make his second start this year in place of the struggling/injured Oliver Perez, and it will mark just the fifth start of his career.

Niese faced the Pirates on Friday and put forth a solid outing, allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings of a no-decision. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five.

The 22-year-old made three starts last season, including one versus Atlanta that saw him get his only major-league win so far, an eight-inning outing on September 13 in which he did not yield a run.

Niese will have to deal with two red-hot hitters in Brian McCann and Casey Kotchman. McCann went 3-for-4 with an RBI in yesterday's game, giving him a hit in all five games since returning from left eye irritation that now has the catcher wearing glasses. He is 9-for-20 with a homer and five RBI since returning.

Kotchman, meanwhile, drove in a run on Tuesday and is hitting .400 (10-for-25) with 11 RBI over his last six games, helping the Braves to a 5-2 mark on their eight-game road trip that wraps today. Atlanta did have a three-game win streak end with Tuesday's loss.

Jo-Jo Reyes gets the start for Atlanta and is still in search of his first win since June 13 of last year. In 18 outings since, the 24-year-old is 0-9 with a 6.61 earned run average. That includes an 0-2 mark in four starts this year, in which he has allowed 14 earned runs over 23 innings.

Reyes lost to Philadelphia on Friday, as he gave up eight runs, although just four were earned. He struggled keeping the ball in the park, as the southpaw was tagged for three homers. Still, the Braves continue to give Reyes chances.

"He's so close to being good," Braves manager Bobby Cox told the Braves' official site. "We certainly haven't given up on him."

Reyes is 0-1 with an 8.74 ERA in three career starts versus New York. Beltran is 3-for-6 versus Reyes, who has also struggled against Jose Reyes. The Mets shortstop is 3-for-5 with two homers versus the Braves hurler.

New York swept a two-game set in Atlanta from May 4-5 and won six of nine at home versus the Braves last year.

Carlos Beltran's outstanding play is certainly a key reason the New York Mets have been able to withstand the loss of slugger Carlos Delgado.

After helping the Mets rally for a victory, Beltran will try to help them win for the ninth time in 10 games on Wednesday when they close out a three-game series against the NL East-rival Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.

Beltran's .374 batting average ties him for the National League lead, but he's also produced six homers and a team-high 25 RBIs. The All-Star center fielder has driven in 11 of those runs, while hitting .333 (12 for 36) with four homers, in helping New York (18-14) win eight of its last nine.

That run has also come with Delgado struggling with an aching right hip that has caused the first baseman to miss six of the last 14 games, including each of the last two.

Delgado is batting .298 with four homers and 23 RBIs, but the Mets are expected to rest him for a few more days before deciding by Friday whether to put him on the disabled list.

With Delgado out again Tuesday, Beltran picked up the offensive slack by going 2 for 4 and drawing a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th to give New York a 4-3 victory over Atlanta (16-17), completing a comeback from a three-run, eighth-inning deficit. It was the first time in 12 tries the Mets rallied to win when trailing after seven innings, and came after Monday's 8-3 loss in the series opener.

Beltran also scored the tying run after hitting a double and stealing third in the ninth.

"He can take over a game. That's basically what he did (Tuesday)," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.

Beltran has done his part in four games - three wins - against the Braves this season, going 7 for 15 with two homers and five RBIs.

The Mets will give rookie Jonathon Niese (0-0, 3.00) a second turn in the rotation in place of Oliver Perez, who is on the disabled list with right patellar tendinitis.

Niese, one of New York's top pitching prospects, was solid in his season debut Friday, yielding two runs and seven hits with five strikeouts in six innings while not getting a decision in a 7-3 win over Pittsburgh. That performance came a day after the left-hander was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo, where he was 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA in five starts.

"Can I pitch better? Probably," Niese told the Mets' official Web site. "I just pounded the zone and kept the ball down. Let them hit it, just don't leave it over the middle of the plate."

Niese got his first career win in his only meeting against Atlanta on Sept. 13, scattering six hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings of a 5-0 win.

The Braves, who saw their three-game winning streak end Tuesday, hope Jo-Jo Reyes (0-2, 5.48) can win for the first time since June 13. The left-hander is 0-9 with a 6.61 ERA in his last 18 games - 17 starts. Over that stretch, he's started three games against the Mets and is 0-1 with an 8.74 ERA.

He's allowed Beltran to go 3 for 6 against him.

Reyes lost again Friday, allowing eight runs and five hits - three homers - with six strikeouts in five innings of a 10-6 defeat to Philadelphia.
