Where it is real F ing COLD
I am tipsy but so pist right now, I have to share this story....
My brother in law is a Desert Storm vet. I with a few others met him and his friends out for some drinks tonight. Well one of his friends is a big time asshole. He is a marine vet which I give him all the credit for, but he told me that EVERYBODY should have to join the military and learn "RESPECT." Me being the guy I am said, "Bullshit!" Not everybody needs to be in the servie to be respectful. He rambles on and on about the youth doesn't do this and doesn't do that. I asked hime if he thought that I wasn't respectful because I wasn't in the military and he said that he thought I wasn't. I jumped on him and told him that I am a nurse to get the point that I am at I have had to wipe Dick, vagina, and ass. Did I imagine doing this as a youngster..... NO. Have I learned respect, YES. Not to mean thats what I had to do to earn it, but it just pisses me off that someone thinks that way.. I have cared so much for the people that I take care of and I know th scope of practice tells you not to be so close, but try doing what I do for the same people day after day not become close. Its only human and for some fuck to tell me that I need to learn respect. FUCK OFF

Well, I know a lot of guys who are vets, and tremendous assholes. On the other hand, I know several guys who swear the military made a man out of them. You have to want to be respectful, you can't be forced to be that way.

Oh, and I think you might have been beyond tipsy when you wrote all of that stuff.

You may want to ask your brother what his friend meant by "respect."

When I came home from my tour of duty in Vietnam, I also felt that everyone should do a tour in the military......as years went by, I softened to everyone should at least do some type of "foreign service," whether it be peace corps or something similar.

The reason being: if everyone had/took the opportunity to do some type of foreign service and get to learn how people in other countries live, they would learn to really appreciate everything we take for granted in this country....and not bitch so much about our way of life here in the U.S......it really is the greatest country.

Military and Respect

I'd like to add my 2 cents; I agree with Axle....after serving my 20 years I initally felt all should serve in the Military but as time has passed I agree that some source of service to the country not just military should be requiered. I know I am jaded in favor of armed forces being at least recognized for service, the respect must be EARNED. BleedingPurple I also know where you come from because I spent my 20 years as a medic mostly in the ER and my wife was a nurse in the OR....when people are sick we're their best buds but afterward who knows. Bottom line our country has changed so much that I many times don't recognize it and that scares me more than respect, recognition, or lack of service to the country that ALLOWS us to bitch and whine when we're not happy. Have a great day all

I'm always brought back to a story a Vietnam vet I worked with told me.

One of the first days over there, and he was on a troop truck of some sort rumbling down the road. He said he learned that all the little village kids would run out to the road, and hope the soldiers would toss them candy, or food of some sort.

Well, he said this truck is flying along, and one of the guys overhead chucks a huge assed can of something the guys didn't care to eat right at one of the kids, sending them flying. Next group of kids, a guy tosses out a sterno can, and a kid would get burned when the thing stuck to his hand.

He said, "Then these dumb fuckers wondered why the road would be mined the next day!"

I don't know if he was telling tales or not, but he had no reason to lie to me.

Was probably not a lie. Saw some similar bullshit over there...and yeah, the dumb fuckers would also wonder why the people in the vill would go over to the VC.....

It's funny that your buddy saw that early in his tour, that was about the first time I saw that crap, I couldn't believe it....

Lots of code pinkies protesting recruiting stations that share your beliefs--so your not alone.

I would be on side of everyone putting in 2 years of service in some form.

I have never thought of military teaching respect, IMO its greatest asset is teaching disipline.

YYZ--on your buddies story--
Would be curious what his MOS (job description) was there.

Not only did I never see such but whether in war or at home--children or children and most show them utmost courtesy. I have no doubt there would be some abuse them as in cilvilian life and maybe even come home and brag about as your buddy--but I can say in 99% of circumstances the others in unit would be on any child abuser like stink on shit.

You might also ask him to explain--

He said, "Then these dumb fuckers wondered why the road would be mined the next day!"

--after you inform him IED's were for most part non existant in VN--:SIB

i`ll bet those vets communicate at a little higher than a 3rd grade level.....

vets may be a problem for some due in no small part to the homegrown anti-american/anti-military sentiment running rampant in this country.....

This guy didn't brag about it. He was stating that this was pretty much his introduction to the war. (I have not worked with him for over ten years, and he really didn't talk much back then.)

As for the mines, they have been used in SE Asia since the 40's! I highly doubt it would take a lot to get your hands on munitions during a war.
